James looked at his sister-in-law with such sadness—not anger, but profound disappointment. “You would have let Margaret take the blame for this? Margaret, who’s been nothing but good to us?”

The officers escorted Diane out. As they left, the kind-faced officer paused. “Ma’am,” he said to Margaret. “I’m truly sorry for what you went through today. Your reputation is intact.”

Margaret nodded, unable to speak past the lump in her throat. When they were alone, James turned to Margaret.

“I should have defended you immediately. I should have known better. Can you forgive me?”

Margaret looked at this man who’d been paralyzed by shock, who’d been confronted by family betrayal in the same moment. “There’s nothing to forgive, Mr. Anderson. Family is complicated. I understand.”

Tommy was still holding Margaret’s hand. She knelt down again, eye level with him. “Thank you, Tommy. You’re very brave.”

He looked at her, really looked at her, in the way he rarely did with anyone. And then he spoke again, slower this time, working hard to form the words.
