CEO Got Her Coffee Declined — A Single Dad Stepped In, Not Knowing She’d Been…
A Single Dad’s Act of Kindness
The line moved. Life continued.
Clare stood there stunned. She took the coffee, her hands trembling slightly.
“Thank you,” she said quietly. “I, I’ll pay you back.”
The man shook his head. “No need. My name’s Daniel.”
“Clare,” she replied. They moved to the side as others ordered.
Daniel crouched down to his daughter. “Go find us a seat, Lily.”
As Lily skipped away, Clare noticed the tiredness in Daniel’s eyes. It was the kind that doesn’t come from lack of sleep alone but from carrying too much for too long.
“You didn’t have to do that,” Clare said again. Daniel shrugged.
“I’m a single dad. I know what it’s like to have a rough morning or a rough year.”
That word “year” hit her harder than he could have known. They sat together, mostly in silence at first.
Lily happily ate her muffin, crumbs everywhere. Daniel watched her like she was his whole world.
Clare finally spoke. “You don’t look like someone who has extra money to spare.”
He laughed softly. “I don’t. I work construction when there’s work; other days I do deliveries.”
“We get by.” “Why help me then?” she asked.
Daniel looked at his daughter, then back at Clare. “Because one day when Lily needs help, I hope someone steps in for her too.”
