CEO Steps In When Her Date Disrespects Her, Never Thought Intervening Would Mean Falling In Love
A Stand for Decency
Olivia Parker’s perfectly manicured nails drummed against the polished surface of the restaurant table. She checked her watch for the third time in 15 minutes, trying to ignore the sinking feeling that her blind date was going to be a complete disaster.
She had almost canceled. Running a multi-million dollar hospitality empire left little time for dating. Her assistant had insisted that work-life balance meant actually having a life outside the corner office of Parker Hotels International.
The maître d’ approached her table with a well-dressed man following behind.
“Miss Parker, your guest has arrived.”
Richard, her date, flashed what he clearly thought was a charming smile as he took the seat across from her.
“Sorry I’m late. Important calls, you know how it is.”
Olivia offered a professional smile.
“Of course. Shall we order?”
The first 10 minutes were bearable. There were standard getting-to-know-you questions that Olivia had answered countless times before. But as their appetizers arrived, Richard’s demeanor shifted.
“So, hotel management,” he said, swirling his wine with exaggerated flare. “That’s cute. Is that like booking rooms and handling complaints about towels?”
Olivia’s spine stiffened.
“Actually, I’m the CEO of Parker Hotels International. We have 46 properties across 12 countries.”
Richard’s eyebrows rose slightly.
“Daddy’s company, I assume?”
“Built from the ground up,” Olivia replied, her voice cooling several degrees, “by me.”
He smirked, clearly not believing her.
“Right. Well, you won’t need to worry about all that stress once you find the right man. Someone who can take care of things.”
Before Olivia could respond, their server appeared with their entrées. Olivia used the interruption to compose herself, wondering if she could feign a work emergency. As the server finished setting down their plates, Richard frowned.
“This isn’t what I ordered. I specifically said medium-rare, and this is practically mooing. And where’s the sauce I asked for?”
“I’m very sorry, sir,” the young woman said, visibly flustered. “I’ll take it back right away.”
“You should be sorry,” Richard snapped. “Do you know how much this meal costs? I expect competence when I’m paying premium prices. Maybe you should find another line of work if you can’t handle basic instructions.”
The server’s face flushed with humiliation as she reached for the plate. Olivia noticed her hands trembling slightly.
“Actually,” Olivia interrupted, her voice calm but firm, “there’s been a misunderstanding. The meal is perfectly fine. In fact, I’d like to speak with the manager about how wonderfully your staff has been handling everything tonight.”
Richard’s face darkened.
“I’m trying to get proper service here.”
“The service has been impeccable,” Olivia continued, addressing the server with a warm smile. “Please give my compliments to the chef. The presentation is beautiful.”
The server gave Olivia a grateful look before departing. Richard glared across the table.
“What was that about?” he demanded. “The service is terrible and you’re praising them.”
“What’s terrible is your behavior,” Olivia replied, placing her napkin on the table and standing up.
“I’ve spent my career building a company that values respect at every level. I wouldn’t dream of treating my staff the way you just treated that server. And I certainly won’t spend another minute with someone who thinks it’s acceptable.”
Richard’s face flushed with anger.
“You’re overreacting. Sit down. You’re making a scene.”
“I’m making a choice,” Olivia corrected him, pulling out her wallet and placing several bills on the table. “More than enough to cover both meals and a generous tip. Enjoy your dinner alone.”
As she turned to leave, she nearly collided with a man who had been seated at a nearby table. He stepped aside quickly, giving her an apologetic smile that momentarily caught her attention. His eyes, a striking shade of blue, met hers briefly before she continued toward the exit.
Outside, Olivia took a deep breath of the cool evening air, feeling a mixture of frustration and relief. She pulled out her phone to order a rideshare when a voice called out behind her.
“Excuse me.”
