“Sarah,” he said that evening, “I had no idea you were applying for our scholarship program.”
Sarah looked embarrassed.
“I started the application before I met you. I was hoping to get help with my remaining debt so I could qualify for a mortgage.”
“But now that I’m living here, it feels wrong to apply for something from your company.”
“Why would it feel wrong?”
“Because people might think I’m taking advantage of our personal relationship.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Sarah, your application was one of the strongest we received. Your qualifications, your dedication to pediatric care, and your personal story of perseverance make you exactly the kind of person this program was designed to help.”
“But the appearance of impropriety…”
“There’s no impropriety in recognizing merit,” Marcus said firmly.
“You earned this opportunity through your own qualifications, not through knowing me.”
Six months after that snowy night, Sarah had not only received the scholarship but had also been offered a position as head nurse in the pediatric ICU at the hospital affiliated with Marcus’ company.
More importantly, she had become an integral part of Marcus and Lily’s family.
“Sarah,” Marcus said one evening as they watched Lily play in their backyard.
