“Come with me.” A Millionaire CEO Saw a Little Girl Sleeping at a Bus Stop—What He Did the Next Day…
The Frozen Promise at the Bus Stop
The snow fell softly through the glow of street lights, covering the city in a blanket of white that muffled all sound. It was nearly midnight on a Tuesday in December, and most sensible people were already home warm and safe from the cold.
Nathan Foster was not most people. At 53, Nathan had built Foster Capital Management from nothing into one of the most successful investment firms in the country.
He’d just left a dinner meeting downtown, another late night in a career built on late nights, and was walking to where his driver had parked when something made him stop. A park bench near the bus stop caught his attention.
In the falling snow, a small figure curled up tight. Nathan’s first thought was that someone had left a bundle of clothes.
But then the bundle moved, shifting slightly. He realized with a jolt of shock that it was a child.
A little girl, maybe seven or 8 years old, lay on the cold bench with her knees pulled up to her chest. She wore a thin cream colored dress, completely inadequate for the weather, and no coat.
Her light brown hair was dusted with snow. Even from a distance, Nathan could see she was shivering.
For a moment he stood frozen, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing. Then training took over, years of being a father even though his own daughter was now grown and living across the country.
Nathan approached quickly but carefully, not wanting to frighten her.
“sweetheart,” he said softly “are you all right?”.
The little girl’s eyes fluttered open, large hazel eyes clouded with exhaustion and cold. She looked at him without the weariness he’d expected, as if she was too tired to be afraid.
“i’m waiting,” she whispered her voice mama said to wait here.
“she’s coming back.”.
Nathan’s chest tightened. He looked around the empty street at the bus stop with no buses running this late and at the snow that had clearly been falling for hours based on the accumulation on the bench.
“when did your mama leave?” he asked gently, kneeling down beside the bench so he was at her eye level.
“this morning,” the girl said.
Nathan felt his stomach drop. She said she had to go get medicine for my baby brother.
She said to stay here and not move so she could find me. She said she’d come right back.
Nathan looked at this child, this tiny freezing child who’d been sitting here for possibly 12 hours waiting for a mother who hadn’t returned. He felt something crack in his chest.
“what’s your name sweetheart?”.
“Emma,” she whispered “emma Johnson.”.
“Emma I’m Nathan i’m going to help you okay?”. He was already pulling off his coat, wrapping it around her small shoulders.
The coat swallowed her completely, but at least it would provide some warmth.
“we need to get you somewhere warm can you stand up?”.
Emma tried, but her legs were too stiff from cold and hours of sitting. Without hesitation, Nathan scooped her up in his arms.
She weighed almost nothing. He could feel her shivering violently against his chest.
“my mama,” Emma protested weakly.
“she won’t know where I am.”.
We’ll leave a note Nathan promised, though his mind was already racing.
