Drunk Boss Challenged a Single Dad to Walk Her Home on Christmas — He Made Her Stay
Finding Warmth in a Cold Season
Something in Victoria’s expression shifted, a vulnerability breaking through her carefully constructed armor. “your daughter won’t want some stranger ruining her Christmas.”
“Lily has a way of making everyone feel welcome,” Jack said with a small smile. “and between you and me she’s been asking for a Christmas miracle this year you might just be it.”
After what seemed like an eternity Victoria nodded almost imperceptibly. “let me change first i’m not going anywhere in this state.”
30 minutes later a transformed Victoria emerged from her bedroom. Gone was the severe business attire, replaced by jeans, a simple sweater, and minimal makeup. Jack was startled by how different she looked, younger and softer somehow.
“if you tell anyone at the office about this you’re fired,” she said but there was no heat behind the words. “your secret safe with me,” Jack promised.
The taxi ride to Jack’s modest townhouse in the suburbs was quiet. Victoria stared out the window as snowflakes danced in the street lights.
Jack sent a text to Mrs rodriguez warning her about their unexpected guest. He still wasn’t entirely sure why he’d invited Victoria except that something about her loneliness had resonated with him. Since losing Sarah he’d learned how crushing solitude could be especially during the holidays.
When they pulled up to the house, decorated with multicolored lights and a slightly crooked wreath on the door, Victoria looked uncertain. “it’s not much compared to your place,” Jack said apologetically.
“it’s a home,” Victoria replied softly. “that’s something my apartment has never been.”
The door flew open before they reached it and a small figure in red and green pajamas burst out. “daddy you’re finally home.” “Did Santa—”
Lily stopped short when she spotted Victoria, her eyes widening. Jack knelt to his daughter’s height.
“lily this is Ms winters she works with Daddy and she’s going to spend Christmas with us is that okay” Lily studied Victoria with the frank curiosity only children possess. “are you daddy’s boss the one he says makes him work too much”
Jack felt his face heat up. But to his surprise Victoria laughed a genuine laugh, not the cold calculated one he was used to hearing at the office.
“yes I’m that boss,” she admitted. “and your dad is right i do make him work too much.”
Lily considered this then nodded solemnly. “that’s okay it’s Christmas and mommy always said Christmas is for forgiveness and new friends.”
She stepped forward and took Victoria’s hand. “do you want to help me hang the stockings daddy’s too tall and always makes them crooked”
Victoria looked momentarily stunned, her eyes darting to Jack as if seeking permission or perhaps reassurance. He nodded encouragingly.
“i’d like that very much,” Victoria said, her voice softer than Jack had ever heard it. Mrs rodriguez departed with a knowing smile and a container of homemade tamales for the holiday.
This left Jack, Victoria, and Lily to their Christmas Eve rituals. Jack watched in amazement as his fierce demanding boss was transformed by his daughter’s innocent enthusiasm.
Victoria helped Lily hang stockings and listened intently to elaborate explanations of each Christmas ornament’s history. She even offered to help prepare cookies for Santa in the kitchen.
While Lily was occupied with arranging cookie cutters Victoria whispered to Jack, “she’s extraordinary.” “she gets that from her mother,” Jack said, a familiar pang in his chest. Sarah was the one who made Christmas magical.
“i’ve been trying to keep up traditions but it’s not the same” “what happened?” Victoria asked. Then she immediately shook her head. “i’m sorry that’s none of my business.”
“Cancer,” Jack said simply. “3 years ago.” Lily was four, young enough to adapt, but old enough to remember and miss her mother.
Victoria was quiet for a moment. “and you’ve been raising her alone since then?” Jack nodded, measuring flour into a bowl.
“we manage the job at Winter’s helps the health insurance covered most of Lily’s therapy” Victoria looked stricken. “i had no idea”
“why would you i’m just your assistant” “an assistant I’ve been working to the bone making you stay late calling on weekends,” Victoria trailed off.
Watching Lily carefully placing stars and trees onto the baking sheet, Victoria spoke again. “i’ve been a monster haven’t I?” Jack smiled slightly. “let’s just say you’ve been focused on other priorities”
The evening continued with cookie baking, story reading, and hot chocolate. Jack observed the gradual unwinding of Victoria’s tightly controlled demeanor.
She laughed at Lily’s jokes and helped create a perfectly arranged plate of cookies for Santa. She even suggested they add a carrot for the reindeer, something Jack had forgotten this year.
When it came time for Lily’s bedtime she insisted Victoria read her a story. Jack watched from the doorway as his boss gently read “The night before Christmas” with all the appropriate voices.
Lily’s eyes drooped before the story ended and Victoria carefully tucked the blanket around her. “good night Ms victoria,” Lily murmured sleepily. “i’m glad you’re not alone for Christmas.”
Victoria’s hand froze on the blanket. “so am I sweetheart,” she whispered back.
