Every Doctor Gave Up… Until a Maid Performed the Miracle for the Millionaire’s Son!

The Astronaut and the Rubber Ball

“You know,” she said after a moment, “My name is Maria. I have a nephew about your age. His name is Carlos. He loves books about dinosaurs. What about you, what do you like?”.

Tommy remained silent but Maria noticed his fingers move slightly on the book’s cover. It was about space and planets.

“Ah, space,” Maria said warmly. “That’s wonderful. Did you know that astronauts have to exercise for 2 hours every day in space? Their muscles get weak without gravity so they have to work very hard to stay strong”.

She didn’t push further. She simply sat with him for a few minutes in comfortable silence then quietly went back to her work.

Richard observed this interaction from the hallway. Something about Maria’s gentle unhurried presence intrigued him.

Over the following days Maria would spend a few minutes with Tommy during her breaks.

She never mentioned his wheelchair or his legs. She talked about the weather, about her nephew’s adventures, about the birds she saw in the garden.

Sometimes Tommy would glance at her. Once she thought she saw the corner of his mouth almost turn up.

One afternoon about a week after Maria started Richard found her in Tommy’s room again. This time she was holding Tommy’s hand. And she was wearing yellow cleaning gloves.

“Mr Tommy,” she was saying with a gentle smile, “Your hands are very strong. Feel this when you hold on to something that’s your strength. That’s still there”.

She placed a small rubber ball in his hand. “The astronauts they squeeze these to keep their hand muscles strong. Would you like to try to?”.

To Richard’s amazement Tommy squeezed the ball just once. But it was something Richard felt his throat tighten with emotion.

That evening he asked Maria to join him in his study.

“Mrs Santos,” he began, “I’ve noticed you spending time with Tommy”.

Maria looked worried. “I’m sorry Mr Patterson if I’ve overstepped”.

“No,” Richard interrupted gently, “No please I wanted to ask. The therapist couldn’t get through to him. How did you?”.

Maria thought for a moment choosing her words carefully.

“Mr Patterson, I didn’t try to get through to him. I just tried to be with him. Sometimes people don’t need fixing. They need to know someone sees them as they are and accepts them right there”.

Richard felt tears sting his eyes. In all his searching for the best doctors and therapists he’d forgotten the simplest thing: just being present with his son.

“Mrs Santos,” he said, his voice thick with emotion, “Would you consider spending more time with Tommy?”.

“I’ll pay you extra of course”.

“No extra payment needed,” Maria said firmly. “That boy has a good heart I can see it. I’d be honored to spend time with him”.

The next day Richard cancelled all future therapy appointments. Instead he asked Maria if she would help Tommy in her own way and he cleared his schedule to be there too.
