He blocked her car, and she went to confront him… not knowing she was arguing with her own boss
Strength of Character and a Shared Future
As Jessica rode the elevator down to level three, she touched her forehead. Her car was now parked there thanks to Dominic’s intervention weeks ago.
She allowed herself to smile. Whatever happened next, whatever complications lay ahead, she could not bring herself to regret falling for Dominic Sterling.,
The next two months were the happiest and most stressful of Jessica’s life. She and Dominic were careful—so careful—to keep their growing relationship private.
They worked together during the day with total professionalism and business discussions. In the evenings, after everyone else had gone home, they would sit in his office and talk for hours.
He told her about his daughter, Emma, who was seven and lived with her mother in Boston. He spoke about the pressure of running a company his father had built.
He shared the loneliness of his position and his failed engagement to Vivien. Jessica shared her own stories. She told him about her father leaving when she was 12.
She spoke of her mother’s diabetes diagnosis and mounting medical bills. She mentioned her younger brother Tommy, who was brilliant but needed help paying for college.
She shared her dreams of finishing her degree and maybe one day running her own business.
“You will,” Dominic said one evening.
His fingers were laced with hers under his desk where no one could see through the windows.,
“You’re going to do amazing things, Jessica, with or without me.”
“I’d prefer with you,” she admitted.
They had not defined what they were yet. They had shared a few stolen kisses and moments of intimacy that left Jessica breathless and wanting more.
But they both knew that going public would create complications neither of them was ready to face. Then Vivian started her campaign. It began subtly.
There were comments at business functions about how Dominic had changed since hiring his new assistant. There were pointed observations about Jessica’s background and lack of formal education.
Suggestions were delivered with poisonous sweetness that perhaps Jessica was not quite as capable as Dominic seemed to think. The gossip intensified.
Jessica heard whispers in the bathroom and saw looks from other employees. Some were jealous, some were judgmental, and some were genuinely concerned that she was being taken advantage of.
The worst part was knowing that Vivian was behind most of it, planting seeds of doubt everywhere she went.,
“She’s trying to drive a wedge between us,” Dominic said furiously.
This followed a particularly difficult board meeting where one of the directors had questioned Jessica’s qualifications.
“I’m going to put a stop to this.”
“Don’t,” Jessica said.
“That’ll just make it worse. It will make it look like you’re protecting me because we’re involved.”
“We are involved, Dominic,” he said.
“And I’m tired of hiding it. I want people to know you’re mine.”
The possessiveness in his voice sent a thrill through Jessica, but she forced herself to be practical.
“If we go public now, everything I’ve accomplished will be attributed to our relationship. Every success will be because I’m sleeping with the boss.”
“I need to earn my place here on my own merit first.”
Dominic pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.
“You’ve already earned it. But I understand. We’ll wait until the Lakefront deal closes. Once that’s done, your role in the success will be undeniable.”
The Lakefront deal was scheduled to close in 3 weeks. Jessica thought she could hold on that long. She was wrong.,
It was a Tuesday when her mother called. Jessica was in a meeting so she let it go to voicemail. When she listened during lunch, her mother’s voice was weak.
“Jessica, honey, I’m at the hospital. The doctors say I need emergency surgery. My kidney is failing. They need to operate tomorrow, but the insurance won’t cover it all.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
Jessica’s hand shook as she called back. The surgery would cost $80,000 out of pocket. $80,000 she absolutely did not have.
Her mother had maybe two days before her condition became life-threatening. She spent the afternoon in a daze, trying to figure out impossible math.
Her savings had $3,000. She could maybe get a loan for $20,000 if she was lucky. That left $60,000 she had no way of obtaining.
She thought about asking Dominic for a loan, but the idea made her sick. It would prove everything Vivian and the gossip had said about her—that she was with him for his money.,
By the end of the day, Jessica had made her decision. She would quit and take out as many loans as she could. She would sell everything she owned.
Maybe somehow she could scrape together enough to save her mother. Her career at Sterling Industries, her relationship with Dominic, and her dreams of finishing her degree would have to wait.
Her mother’s life was more important. She typed up her resignation letter, tears blurring her vision as she wrote about personal family circumstances.
She thanked Dominic for the opportunity. She would slip it under his door and be gone before he arrived tomorrow morning.
It was cowardly, but she could not face telling him goodbye. The next morning, Jessica was packing up her desk when her phone rang.
It was a number she did not recognize from the hospital. With trembling hands, she answered.
“Miss Starling? This is Mercy’s General Hospital. I’m calling about your mother’s surgery.”
Jessica’s heart stopped.
“Is she okay? What happened?”
“She’s fine,” the woman said quickly.,
“Better than fine, actually. The surgery was successful. She’s in recovery now and expected to make a full recovery.”
“But I didn’t authorize the surgery,” Jessica said, confused.
“I couldn’t afford it.”
“The bill was paid in full early this morning,” the woman explained.
“By an anonymous donor. Your mother is very lucky to have such generous friends.”
Jessica hung up, her mind reeling. Anonymous donor? There was only one person who could have done this.
There was only one person who knew about her mother’s condition and had that kind of money. She found Dominic in his office, staring out at the lake with his hands in his pockets.
He turned when she entered and she saw the resignation letter on his desk.
“You’re going to leave,” he said quietly.
“Without even saying goodbye.”
“How did you know about my mother?” Jessica asked, her voice breaking.
“Carolyn mentioned you seemed upset yesterday. I asked what was wrong.”
He turned to face her fully.
“Why didn’t you come to me, Jessica? Why didn’t you ask for help?”
“Because I couldn’t,” she said, tears spilling down her cheeks.,
“Don’t you see? If I took money from you, it would prove everything people are saying about me. That I’m using you. That I’m only here because of our relationship.”
“I don’t care what people say,” Dominic said fiercely.
“Your mother needed help. Nothing else matters.”
“It matters to me,” Jessica sobbed.
“My integrity matters. My pride matters.”
“Your mother’s life matters more,” Dominic said, crossing the room to pull her into his arms.
“And if you think I was going to stand by and let you struggle alone, then you don’t know me at all.”
Jessica cried against his chest. All the fear and stress of the past 24 hours poured out of her. When she finally calmed down, she pulled back to look at him.
“I can’t pay you back. Not for years, maybe decades.”
“I don’t want you to pay me back,” Dominic said.
“Consider it a gift.”
“$80,000 is not a gift. It’s a life-changing amount of money.”
“Then let me change your life,” he said softly.
“Let me be there for you. Support you. Love you the way you deserve.”
Jessica’s breath caught.,
“Love?”
“Yes, love,” Dominic said.
“I’m in love with you, Jessica Starling. I think I have been since that day in the parking garage when you looked at me like I was just a man.”
“It’s not a title or a bank account. You’ve changed everything for me. You’ve made me want to be better, to build something meaningful beyond just profit margins and acquisitions.”
“I love you too,” Jessica whispered.
“So much it terrifies me.”
“Then be terrified with me,” Dominic said, cupping her face in his hands.
“We’ll figure it out together. But please, please don’t leave. Don’t quit. Don’t run away from this.”
“What about the gossip? The judgment? Vivien?”
“Let them talk,” Dominic said firmly.
“I’m done hiding how I feel about you. I’m done pretending you’re just my assistant. You’re the woman I love and I don’t care who knows it.”
He kissed her then, deep and passionate and full of promise. When they finally broke apart, Jessica was breathless and smiling through her tears.
“People are going to lose their minds.”
“Probably,” Dominic agreed with a grin.,
“Should we make it official?”
“What do you mean?”
Instead of answering, Dominic took her hand and led her down to the lobby. The entire executive team was gathered for the weekly staff meeting.
Conversations died as Dominic walked in with Jessica, their hands clasped together.
“I have an announcement,” Dominic said, his voice carrying through the space.
“Some of you have been speculating about my relationship with Jessica Starling. Let me make it clear: Jessica and I are together.”
“She’s not just my assistant or my colleague. She’s the woman I love and plan to spend my life with. Anyone who has a problem with that can direct their concerns to me personally.”
The room erupted in shocked murmurs. Jessica saw Vivien in the back, her face white with fury. Carolyn was beaming.
Other faces showed surprise, approval, disapproval, and everything in between. But Jessica only cared about one face: the man standing beside her, looking at her like she was his entire world.
Six months later, Jessica stood in the parking garage of Sterling Industries, level three. She was in front of the spot where she and Dominic had first met.,
It was early morning. The space was quiet and empty. She heard footsteps behind her and turned to see Dominic approaching, looking nervous in a way she had rarely seen.
“Why’d you ask me to meet you here?” she asked.
Her heart was already racing with hope.
“Because this is where it all started,” Dominic said, taking her hands in his.
“This is where I met the most infuriating, brilliant, beautiful woman I’ve ever known. This is where you called me selfish and entitled and completely changed my life.”
“Dominic…” Jessica said, her voice trembling.
He dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket.
“Jessica Starling, you’ve made me a better man. You’ve taught me what really matters in life: family, integrity, kindness, love. I don’t want to spend another day without you by my side.”
“Will you marry me?”
The ring was beautiful, simple, and elegant—exactly what she would have chosen. More beautiful was the love shining in Dominic’s eyes: the vulnerability, hope, and absolute certainty.,
“Yes,” Jessica said, tears streaming down her face.
“Yes, a thousand times yes.”
Dominic slipped the ring on her finger and stood, pulling her into a kiss that tasted like promises and forever.
“I called your parking space selfishly,” he said when they finally broke apart.
“I’m going to spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
Jessica laughed, the sound echoing through the parking garage.
“You already have. You gave me everything: love, support, a future I never dreamed possible.”
“We gave each other everything,” Dominic corrected.
“That’s what love is.”
One year later, Jessica stood in her new office on the 43rd floor. She looked out at the same view Dominic had from his office one floor up.
She was now vice president of operations, a position she had earned through hard work and the successful closure of several major acquisitions.
Her MBA was almost complete. Her mother was healthy and Tommy was thriving in college on a scholarship fund Dominic had quietly established.,
The ring on her finger caught the light as she reached for her coffee. She was Mrs. Jessica Sterling now, married to the love of her life.
They had a simple ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Vivien had stopped her scheming after the engagement, finally accepting that she had lost.
The office gossip had died down, replaced by respect for Jessica’s actual accomplishments. Her phone buzzed with a text from Dominic.
“Lunch on the roof? I miss my wife.”
Jessica smiled, typing back a quick yes. She thought about that morning in the parking garage and how angry she had been.
She had wished for the arrogant man in the Mercedes to face some kind of consequence. She had gotten her wish in a way.
The consequence was falling in love with her, and she had fallen just as hard in return. Sometimes, Jessica thought, the universe worked in mysteriously perfect ways.,
A stolen parking spot had led to a confrontation, which had led to a job, which had led to the greatest love story of her life. She would never complain about parking again.
