He Threatened To Call ICE On Me—So I Took His BMW And His Freedom

Part 1

The crisp autumn air bit sharply at my face when I stepped out of the warm cab of my heavy-duty wrecker.

My steel-toed boots barely made a sound on the pristine, sweeping concrete of the sprawling circular driveway.

The target was sitting right there under the warm, expensive glow of the custom carriage lights flanking the massive front doors.

It was a late-model BMW 7-Series.

It was sleek, black, meticulously detailed, and completely unpaid for.

It was exactly six months delinquent on its lease payments.

I was just here to collect their property.

I ran the vehicle identification number on my company tablet to verify the digits against the bank’s secure database.

Everything matched perfectly down to the final letter.

I lowered the hydraulic stinger on my rig, the low mechanical hum slicing through the absolute, insulated silence of the affluent gated community.

This was supposed to be the easy part of the job.

I slid the heavy steel crossbar expertly under the rear wheels and secured the heavy-duty nylon straps over the low-profile tires.

The expensive German sedan lifted smoothly into the air.

The heavy solid-oak front door of the mansion suddenly flew open with a violent crack that echoed across the manicured lawn.

A man stormed out onto the expansive stone porch.

He was wearing matching navy-blue silk pajamas and expensive leather house slippers.

His face was flushed a dangerous, unhealthy shade of crimson.

He marched down the wide stone steps, a thick finger already pointed aggressively directly at the center of my chest.

I let out a very slow breath and simply leaned back against the cold steel side of my truck.

He did not even hesitate for a second before launching into his blistering tirade.

He demanded to know what on earth I thought I was doing on his property at two in the morning.

He loudly ordered me to step away from his vehicle immediately or face the consequences.

I stood perfectly still, maintaining a completely neutral expression, and let him close the distance between us.

He stopped just inches from me, his chest heaving with exertion, the distinct scent of expensive bourbon radiating heavily off his breath.

The word ‘amigo’ dripped from his mouth in that slow, condescending tone reserved for anyone assumed to not speak English.

A thick finger stabbed the air as he promised this would be a massive, career-ending mistake.

His eyes darted from the side of my tow truck to the reflective uniform jacket I was wearing.

Taking in my features, his intoxicated mind made an instant, incredibly arrogant calculation.

In his head, I was nothing more than random hired help, fresh off a boat, working a grueling minimum-wage night shift for a faceless corporation.

The title to the quarter-million-dollar truck I was driving sat safely in my office safe.

My name was embroidered on the uniform I was wearing, and I owned the entire multi-state recovery company.

Instead of correcting him, my mouth stayed shut and my face remained completely impassive.

Watching him rant and rave into the cold night air was far more entertaining.

He crossed his arms forcefully and stepped directly into the path of my massive truck.

He puffed out his chest, completely and absurdly convinced that his posture alone could somehow stop a commercial vehicle from leaving.

He swore up and down that I was absolutely not leaving this neighborhood with his expensive car.

I could have easily maneuvered the rig around him without a second thought.

I had dealt with far worse, far more dangerous situations over my many years in this chaotic business.

I had dodged swinging baseball bats, stared down drawn weapons, and outrun angry, unchained guard dogs.

But this guy in his silk pajamas was entirely different.

I genuinely wanted to see exactly how deep of a hole he was willing to dig for himself before he realized he was trapped.

He leaned in even closer, his voice dropping from a yell to a menacing, entitled growl.

He promised his lawyer would have my head on a platter by morning.

He boldly guaranteed I would be completely out of business and living on the street by the end of the month.

I just crossed my ankles casually and maintained unwavering eye contact.

My absolute silence seemed to infuriate him even more than if I had shouted back.

He loudly demanded to know if I even realized how much his luxury car cost.

He arrogantly bragged that the vehicle was worth substantially more than I made in an entire year of backbreaking labor.

He had absolutely no earthly idea what my company pulled in annually from our exclusive bank contracts.

He reached frantically into his silk pajama pocket and yanked out his latest-model smartphone.

He shoved the bright camera lens right into my face.

The glaring recording light blinded me for a split second before my eyes adjusted.

“Smile for the camera, amigo, so everyone can see your face,” he barked, shoving the lens closer.

The threat of sending the footage straight to immigration enforcement first thing in the morning hung heavily in the freezing air.

My continued silence only seemed to fuel his twisted sense of victory.

He stepped into my space, daring me to act tough once federal agents were dragging me in handcuffs back to whatever miserable country he assumed I had crawled out of.

The hollow immigration threats were always my absolute favorite part of these high-end repossession jobs.

They always came from desperate men who were seconds away from losing everything.

He lowered the phone with a smug grin, clearly thinking he had won the psychological battle.

He confidently promised he would have my job by Monday afternoon at the latest.

He swore he would call my boss at the very crack of dawn and have me fired before I even finished my morning cup of coffee.

I uncrossed my arms and stood up straight, towering slightly over him.

I slowly reached into my breast pocket, pulled out a thick, heavy-stock card, and held it out face-down so he could make the call.
