I Found A Freezing Six-Year-Old Outside My Office — The Truth About Her Missing Mother Changed My Entire Life

Part 2

She told me Brenda was currently there, but she had collapsed during her nursing shift yesterday morning.

Brenda had been running a dangerously high fever and was severely dehydrated from sheer overwork.

She had been admitted as a patient and was currently stable but incredibly weak.

A massive wave of relief washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by a surge of hot anger.

The hospital had tried to call the emergency contact, but the neighbor had been at work all day.

Brenda had been lying trapped in a hospital bed, absolutely terrified for her missing daughter.

Meanwhile, Mia had spent a terrifying night and a long day completely alone, thinking her mother was gone forever.

I told the administrator firmly that I was bringing Brenda’s daughter to see her immediately.

I hung up the phone and knelt back down in front of the sobbing little girl.

I wiped away her tears and told her I had finally found her mom.

I explained gently that her mother had gotten very sick at work and had to stay at the hospital so the doctors could help her.

Mia’s face transformed instantly from pure despair to desperate hope.

She begged me to take her to the hospital right that second.

I called a private car service and paid double for them to arrive immediately.

Within ten minutes, we were sitting in the back of a warm luxury sedan driving through the snowy streets.

Mia sat pressed tightly against the frosted window.

She clutched her stuffed rabbit fiercely to her chest, practically vibrating with nervous anticipation.

She asked me three different times if her mother was really going to be okay.

I assured her every single time with absolute certainty.

She looked at me very seriously with her wide, dark eyes.

She asked me point-blank if I was actually a good grown-up.

The innocent, direct question hit me far harder than I expected it to.

I thought about my empty penthouse and my cutthroat business practices, and I told her honestly that I was trying to be.

We arrived at the crowded hospital, and I quickly led Mia through the confusing maze of sterile corridors.

We found Brenda lying in a semi-private room, looking incredibly pale and exhausted with an IV strapped to her arm.

The exact moment she saw Mia standing in the doorway, her entire face lit up with overwhelming joy.

Mia screamed her mother’s name and ran straight to the side of the hospital bed.

I had to quickly lift the little girl up so she could safely reach her mother’s arms.

Brenda wrapped her arms desperately around her daughter and broke down sobbing uncontrollably.

She kept apologizing over and over for not coming home to her.

Mia gently wiped her mother’s tears away with her small hands.

She pointed back toward the doorway and told Brenda that I had helped her.

Brenda looked up and noticed me standing quietly in the shadows for the first time.

She pulled Mia closer to her chest protectively.

She asked me defensively exactly who I was and what I wanted.

I introduced myself calmly and explained exactly how I had found Mia standing alone in the snow outside my office.

Brenda’s defensive posture melted, and her eyes filled with fresh, overwhelming tears.

She thanked me profusely for stopping when anyone else in this city would have just kept walking.

I shook my head dismissively and told her it was absolutely nothing.

Brenda looked at me with tears in her eyes and asked a question I wasn’t prepared to answer: “Why did you really stop for her when everyone else walked away?”
