I gave up my bed for a stranded elderly woman during a severe winter storm, completely unaware that her mysterious grandson was about to change my entire life.

Part 2

Exactly three days had passed since Martha and her handsome grandson had left the mountain town.

The devastating storm had left a massive trail of destruction, but our daily routine at the diner was gradually returning to normal.

I stood in my apartment, carefully folding Martha’s expensive woolen coat.

It was now completely dry and impeccably clean after a highly specialized treatment I had personally paid for in town.

The fine fabric exuded a faint, pleasant aroma of fresh lavender.

Brian leaned casually against the wooden frame of the back door, watching me meticulously wrap the coat in delicate tissue paper.

He loudly pointed out that I still had not called the sweet old lady.

I deliberately avoided my childhood friend’s knowing gaze, asking how he knew that.

He laughed out loud, stepping into the small apartment and dropping himself onto my sofa.

My friend claimed he had watched me stare blankly at Dan’s fancy business card at least fifteen different times over the past three days.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a brief moment, feeling my cheeks flush with heat.

He was absolutely right.

Dan’s card was currently sitting inside my nightstand drawer like a dangerous secret.

I quietly muttered that it was really not that simple.

Brian dramatically raised a skeptical eyebrow.

I reminded him of the luxury car they drove away in and the incredibly expensive clothes they wore.

Brian simply shrugged his broad shoulders without any hesitation.

He boldly pointed out that Dan definitely liked me, judging by the intense way he was staring the entire time he was here.

I frantically shook my head, desperately trying to banish the vivid, fluttery images his blunt words evoked.

Abruptly standing up, I declared that I was going to call Martha that very afternoon to keep my promise.

After the chaotic lunch rush ended, I sat down alone on the quiet back porch.

My stomach tied tightly in nervous knots as I slowly dialed the Denver phone number printed on the elegant card.

A highly professional female voice answered the line, formally announcing the Davies residence.

I stammered slightly, caught entirely off guard by the formal greeting, and asked to speak with Martha.

When Martha’s joyful voice rang through the phone, my anxiety instantly melted away.

I told her the coat was ready and offered to ship it via overnight mail.

Her firm refusal came back instantly.

She absolutely insisted that I bring it down to Denver in person for a proper afternoon tea that coming Saturday.

My frantic mind desperately searched for a polite, believable excuse.

She continued, her tone shifting to something much softer and incredibly persuasive.

Mentioning her private collection of rare poetry books was a highly strategic move.

That struck a very sensitive, passionate chord deep within my heart.

I finally conceded, admitting that Saturday was my only day off.

She happily declared that she would have Greg drive the car up to the mountains to personally pick me up.

I protested that a private car was unnecessary, but she absolutely forbade any further argument.

Saturday arrived much faster than I had originally anticipated.

I woke up exceptionally early, staring blankly into my open closet with a rapidly growing sense of sheer panic.

Absolutely nothing I owned seemed remotely appropriate for visiting a massive luxury penthouse.

I eventually selected a modest navy blue dress with three-quarter sleeves and sensible beige flats.

At exactly two o’clock, the gleaming black luxury SUV smoothly pulled up right in front of the rustic diner.

Greg stepped out, immediately approaching me with a highly respectable posture and a welcoming smile.

The long drive down the winding mountain roads into the bustling city of Denver was incredibly surreal.

We finally entered a highly affluent neighborhood, pulling up in front of a magnificent classical-style residential building.

Greg gently guided me past the marble lobby and directly into a private brass-paneled elevator.

As the quiet elevator rapidly ascended toward the top floor, my stomach twisted into nervous knots.

The heavy oak doors slid open directly into the magnificent penthouse.

Martha looked absolutely radiant in an elegant emerald green silk blouse.

She joyfully pulled me into a tight, affectionate embrace.

I slowly followed her toward a massive living room featuring large glass doors.

As we stepped out onto the expansive outdoor balcony, I could not help but notice something highly specific.

The massive apartment seemed entirely empty of any other family members.

There was absolutely no sign of Dan anywhere.

I felt a tiny, inexplicable pang of sudden disappointment.

Did I completely misread the situation, and what do you guys think?
