I Selfishly Enabled My Wife’s Darkest Habit — And It Ruined Both Of Us

Part 1
I knew exactly who my wife was when I married her.
Megan had a dark history that she never tried to hide from me.
She spent her early twenties tumbling through a vicious cycle of narcotics and reckless encounters.
By the time we met, she was firmly planted on the road to recovery.
She attended her meetings religiously and kept herself grounded.
I admired her strength more than anything else in the world.
Our relationship was built on a foundation of absolute honesty.
We settled into a comfortable, quiet life together.
She always had an incredibly high drive, which I considered a blessing.
I thought we had the perfect marriage.
I thought our bond was unbreakable.
I was completely wrong.
The unraveling began about eight months ago.
We were celebrating a promotion I had received at work.
I poured us some drinks to mark the occasion.
Megan had always enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner without issue.
She was never entirely sober, but she always maintained strict control.
That night, however, she drank far more than usual.
I watched her eyes take on a glassy, distant shine.
Her inhibitions completely dissolved.
A switch flipped inside her mind.
She unlocked a wild, unrestrained side of herself that I had never seen before.
We engaged in things I had only ever fantasized about.
The experience was intoxicating.
It felt like I was with an entirely different person.
I was captivated by this new, uninhibited version of my wife.
We woke up the next morning feeling exhausted but ecstatic.
I dismissed the night as a rare, harmless indulgence.
It was supposed to be a one-time event.
A couple of weeks later, it happened again.
She poured another heavy drink.
The wildness returned with even more intensity.
Then it happened a third time.
And a fourth.
We were both swept up in the thrilling momentum of it all.
I was having the time of my life.
I completely ignored the warning signs flashing right in front of me.
I didn’t pause for a single second to consider what this was doing to her mind.
Soon, the dynamic shifted entirely.
She started losing control of herself.
The casual drinks turned into a daily necessity.
Her eyes held a constant, hungry desperation.
I started noticing small inconsistencies in her daily routine.
She would claim she was working late, but her car wasn’t in the office lot.
I caught her in minor lies about where she was going.
She became defensive whenever I asked simple questions.
I knew something was wrong.
But then we would make up.
She would get drunk, and we would have another incredible night.
I allowed my physical pleasure to blind me to her downward spiral.
I became her enabler.
I actively encouraged her destruction.
I started asking her if she wanted a drink the moment she walked through the door.
I hoped to trigger that wild state of mind.
I wanted to see what boundaries we could push next.
She loved the feeling of freedom that the alcohol provided.
She told me it helped bring her guard down.
I selfishly supplied the key to her undoing.
I prioritized my own fantasies over her mental health.
I was too arrogant to realize that I was reawakening her deepest demons.
The turning point arrived on a Tuesday evening.
We were both heavily intoxicated.
I casually brought up the idea of bringing a third person into our bedroom.
Megan immediately stiffened.
She rejected the idea outright.
She said it crossed a line she wasn’t willing to cross.
I dropped the subject, assuming that was the end of it.
I went to sleep that night feeling a faint twinge of guilt.
I brushed it off by morning.
I convinced myself that our marriage was strong enough to weather any storm.
Exactly one week later, Megan attended a party hosted by a mutual friend.
I stayed home to catch up on some paperwork.
The hours ticked by, and she didn’t return.
She ignored my texts and sent my calls straight to voicemail.
A cold knot of anxiety formed in my stomach.
I paced the living room floor until two in the morning.
When the front door finally clicked open, I braced myself for an argument.
I stepped into the hallway.
I expected to see her stumbling in alone.
Instead, I heard the heavy thud of unfamiliar footsteps.
I heard giggling echoing from the living room.
I rounded the corner.
My breath hitched in my throat.
Megan was intertwined with someone else on our couch.
She had brought a stranger home from the party.
I stood frozen in the doorway.
The stranger looked up at me with a confused expression.
Megan didn’t miss a beat.
She looked at me through half-lidded eyes.
She smiled.
She gestured for me to join them.
And that was the exact moment I realized the monster I had fed was no longer mine to control.
