I Took In A Homeless Single Mom — I Had No Idea She Would Save My Life

Part 2

I explained that it was ovarian cancer.

By the time the doctors finally found it, it was already stage four.

Brenda’s hand moved instinctively across the wooden table toward mine.

I told her we had tried absolutely everything to save her.

We went through brutal rounds of chemo, intense radiation, and experimental treatments we couldn’t possibly afford.

We sold everything of value we owned and completely drained our savings accounts.

We maxed out every credit card and took out massive loans against the house.

The awful memories still felt incredibly sharp and painful in my mind.

I admitted that we had fought fiercely for eighteen grueling months.

Despite everything we sacrificed, she still left us.

Brenda whispered a sincere apology, her eyes brimming with fresh tears.

I told her I had a three-year-old boy who barely understood why his mommy wasn’t coming home.

I also had a towering mountain of medical debt that took two agonizing years to crawl out from under.

My voice went rough as I remembered those dark, crushing days.

I lost the house, lost most of our stuff, and had to start completely over from scratch.

I took the very first job I could get in construction.

It was hard, backbreaking labor with incredibly long hours.

It forced me to move Tyler and myself into this tiny rental house.

I paused, feeling the heavy weight of those lost years pressing down on my shoulders.

I admitted that I had simply shut down emotionally.

I wasn’t really living anymore; I was just existing and going through the motions.

I would wake up, get Tyler ready, drop him at daycare, and work until I couldn’t stand.

Then I would pick him up, feed him, put him to bed, and repeat the miserable cycle.

Brenda asked gently how long I had lived like that.

I met her empathetic eyes and told her it had been far too long.

I had locked myself away from absolutely everyone.

My friends eventually stopped calling when I kept ignoring them.

My family back east offered to take Tyler for a while to give me a break.

But I couldn’t bear to let him go for even a single day.

He was the only piece of her I had left in this world.

I felt I had to try to be both parents, even though I was barely keeping myself together.

I leaned forward slightly, my hands trembling.

I confessed that some days I genuinely didn’t know how I was going to make it through to the next morning.

But there was absolutely no one else to rely on.

There was no one to complain to, no one to hand him off to when the grief got too heavy.

So I just put my head down and kept pushing forward.

Brenda asked what had finally changed for me.

I let out a hollow laugh and admitted that nothing had really changed at all.

I was still going through the motions most days, just trying to figure out how to be enough for my son.

But then I looked out into that freezing storm tonight.

I saw the two of them huddled there, drowning and completely desperate.

I squeezed her hand gently.

I told her that maybe the only thing that gives any meaning to what we went through is if we use it to help someone else.

No one was there to catch us when we fell so hard.

I told her that maybe I could be that person to catch her now.

Fresh tears rolled down Brenda’s cheeks, but this time she was finally smiling through them.

What happened the next morning when my son woke up and found a strange girl sleeping in our house?
