“Ms., can you pretend to be our daddy’s date?” triplets asked stranger—what happened next magic

From Pretend to Forever

The wedding day arrived with perfect blue skies and a temperature that felt like a gift. Jessica had picked Ryan and the girls up at 1:30 p.m.

The triplets were dressed in matching lavender dresses, their excitement palpable.

“you look so pretty”

Mia breathed when Jessica arrived.

Jessica wore a red dress—elegant, sophisticated, and safe. Her hair was down and her makeup was carefully applied.

“you look beautiful,”

Ryan said quietly.

“you clean up pretty well yourself.”

Ryan wore a navy suit that fit him perfectly. He looked handsome and confident, nothing like a man about to pretend to be someone’s boyfriend at a family wedding.

The ceremony was beautiful. Jessica’s sister Sarah looked radiant and the vows were heartfelt. Jessica managed not to cry, though Mia did, which made everyone smile.

“ready?”

Ryan asked as they approached the entrance.

“no but let’s do this anyway.”

Jessica’s mother spotted them immediately.

“jessica there you are.”

She rushed over then stopped, staring at Ryan and the triplets.

“and you must be Ryan”

“mrs heart”

Ryan said smoothly, extending his hand.

“it’s wonderful to finally meet you jessica’s told me so much about you and these must be your daughters”

Jessica’s mother looked delighted.

“triplets how wonderful this is Sophia Mia and Ella”

Ryan introduced.

“we’re six”

Sophia announced.

“we’re very well behaved”

Mia added.

“most of the time”

Ella qualified.

Jessica’s mother laughed. They were adorable. She told them to come in as everyone had been dying to meet Jessica’s mystery man.

The next two hours were a carefully choreographed performance. Jessica’s family descended on them like friendly locusts. Her father shook Ryan’s hand and talked about graphic design.

Her aunt Carol asked invasive questions that Ryan deflected with charm. Her cousins flirted shamelessly until Jessica shot them warning looks.

The triplets were instant hits. They danced with Jessica’s younger cousins and charmed the elderly relatives.

Sophia gave a detailed explanation of volcanic activity to Jessica’s uncle, who happened to be a geology professor.

“your daughters are remarkable”

Jessica’s father said to Ryan during dinner.

“thank you they’re everything to me”

“how did you and Jessica meet?”

Ryan launched into their practiced story: the park, a chance encounter, and Jessica helping when the girls had a crisis.

He explained phone numbers were exchanged and the rest was history.

“you seem very happy together,”

Jessica’s father observed.

“we are,”

Ryan said. Jessica could not tell if he was still acting.

As dinner ended, the DJ announced the first dance for the newlyweds, then parent dances, then an open floor.

“may I have this dance?”

Ryan asked Jessica formally.

“you may.”

They moved to the floor. Ryan’s hand settled on Jessica’s waist; her hand rested on his shoulder. They began to sway.

“you’re a good dancer,”

Jessica observed.

“emma taught me she loved dancing”

“tell me about her if you want to.”

Ryan was quiet for a moment.

“she was brave funny had this way of making everyone feel special the girls would have loved her”

“they do love her through you through the stories you tell”

“you think so?”

“i know so”

They danced in silence. Jessica became aware of how close they were. She felt how Ryan’s hand was warm against her waist.

She noticed how his cologne was subtle but perfect. This did not feel like pretending anymore.

“jessica”

Ryan said quietly.

“yeah?”

“I think I’m in trouble”

“what kind of trouble?”

“the kind where I’m starting to forget this is fake”

Jessica’s breath caught.

“ryan”

“I know i know it’s fake i know we agreed this was just for today but somewhere between coffee dates and watching you with my daughters and dancing with you right now I forgot to keep my distance”

Jessica looked up at him. She saw vulnerability in his eyes that matched her own confusion.

“i don’t know what to say”

“you don’t have to say anything i just needed to be honest”

The song ended. They stood there, neither moving.

“daddy Jessica come sit with us”

Sophia called from their table. The moment broke.

They returned to the table where three little girls were demolishing cake. Jessica’s phone buzzed with a text from her sister Sarah.

“sarah your boyfriend is amazing i’m so happy for you you deserve this”

Jessica stared at the text. Her sister thought this was real. Her entire family thought this was real.

And the most dangerous part: Jessica was starting to wish it was real.

The rest of the reception passed in a blur of more dancing and more conversation. The triplets were getting progressively more tired but refusing to admit it.

Finally, as the evening wound down, Jessica and Ryan collected the girls and headed to the parking lot.

“that was exhausting”

Jessica admitted.

“but successful your family loved us”

“they did didn’t they”

They reached Jessica’s car. The girls piled into the back seat, already half asleep.

“well”

Ryan said awkwardly.

“we did it mission accomplished”

“mission accomplished”

Jessica echoed. They stood there in the parking lot, two people who had spent two weeks pretending to date and one evening convincing everyone they were real.

“what happens now?”

Jessica asked.

“i don’t know we agreed this was just for the wedding.”

“Right just for the wedding.”

But Ryan hesitated.

“but what if it didn’t have to be just for the wedding?”

Jessica’s heart hammered.

“what are you saying?”

“i’m saying maybe we don’t have to pretend anymore maybe we could try this for real.”

“Ryan that’s crazy we barely know each other”

“we know enough i know you’re brilliant and driven and kind to my daughters i know you make me laugh i know when I’m with you i don’t feel quite so alone anymore”

“this was supposed to be fake”

Jessica said weakly.

“it was but it’s not anymore at least not for me”

Ryan stepped closer.

“tell me you don’t feel it too tell me these last two weeks have just been an act for you”

Jessica opened her mouth then closed it. She could not lie.

“i feel it”

She whispered.

“but I’m terrified”

“of what?”

“of this being real of caring about you and the girls of losing you like I lost Mark of being too much again”

Ryan cupped her face gently.

“jessica Hart you are not too much you’re exactly enough and I’m not Mark i’m not going to punish you for being extraordinary”

“how do you know?”

“because I’ve spent two weeks watching you be extraordinary and all I want is more”

He kissed her, soft and tentative, asking permission. Jessica kissed him back, deeper and more certain.

When they pulled apart, both were smiling.

“so”

Ryan said.

“Real dating want to try it?”

“your daughters are going to be impossible about this”

“they already are impossible”

“fair point”

“is that a yes?”

Jessica looked at the car where three little girls were watching them with undisguised glee, not even pretending to be asleep anymore.

“that’s a yes”

Jessica said. The triplets cheered so loud several people in the parking lot turned to stare.

Six months later, Jessica’s apartment was chaos. Triplets had taken over her previously pristine living room with toys everywhere.

Art supplies were scattered across her dining table and a half-built blanket fort occupied her couch.

“this place is a disaster,”

Jessica’s mother observed, visiting for dinner.

“i know,”

Jessica said happily.

“isn’t it wonderful?”

Ryan emerged from the kitchen carrying plates.

“dinner’s ready girls clean up and wash hands.”

Three blonde heads appeared from the blanket fort.

“five more minutes”

They chorused.

“now”

Ryan said firmly. They obeyed, grumbling dramatically. Jessica’s mother watched this exchange with obvious amusement.

“you two are good together”

“thanks Mom”

“i’m glad you took a chance on him on them”

“me too”

After dinner, after the girls were settled watching a movie, Jessica and Ryan stood in her kitchen cleaning dishes.

“your mother really likes me now”

Ryan observed.

“she always liked you she just wasn’t sure I’d let myself be happy”

“are you happy?”

Jessica looked at the living room where three girls were arguing about which movie to watch next. She looked at the man beside her who started as a fake boyfriend and become something infinitely more real.

“i’m terrified”

She admitted.

“every day I’m scared this is too good to be true”

“but are you happy?”

“deliriously”

Ryan kissed her temple.

“good because I’m planning on making you deliriously happy for a very long time”

“how long?”

“how does forever sound?”

Jessica turned to face him fully.

“are you asking me something?”

Ryan’s smile was nervous but determined. He pulled a small box from his pocket.

“jessica Hart 6 months ago my daughters asked you the most ridiculous question imaginable they asked if you’d pretend to be my date and you said yes to the craziest idea either of us had ever heard i remember”

“now I’m asking you something even crazier will you stop pretending and be my real permanent forever date?”

He opened the box. Inside was a simple, perfect ring. Jessica’s hands flew to her mouth.

“ryan”

“the girls helped pick it out”

He said quickly.

“they’ve been planning this proposal for weeks sophia has a binder”

“of course she does”

“is that a yes?”

Jessica pulled him into a kiss, long, deep, and certain.

“yes”

She said against his lips.

“absolutely yes”

Three squeals erupted from the living room.

“they’re getting married!”

The triplets shouted.

“you were supposed to be watching the movie”

Ryan called.

“this is better than any movie”

Sophia yelled back. Jessica laughed, cried, and held Ryan close.

Six months ago she lied to her mother about having a boyfriend to avoid judgment at a family wedding.

Three little girls had offered an impossible solution and somehow, impossibly, pretending had become the most real thing in her life.

Two years after three triplets had asked a stranger if she would pretend to be their daddy’s date, Jessica stood in her childhood church. She wore a wedding dress and actual happiness.

Ryan waited at the altar. Sophia, Mia, and Ella stood beside him as junior bridesmaids, practically vibrating with excitement.

Jessica’s sister Sarah walked her down the aisle.

“ready?”

She whispered.

“so ready.”

As Jessica reached Ryan, he took her hands. His eyes were bright.

“no pretending this time,”

He whispered.

“no pretending,”

Jessica agreed.

They married surrounded by family and friends who had watched them fall in love.

They were people who had seen fake dating become real partnership and witnessed three little girls change two lives with one simple question.

During the reception, Sophia gave a speech.

“when we were six,”

She said seriously, reading from prepared notes.

“we saw a sad lady on a bench we asked her if she’d pretend to be our daddy’s date she said yes that was the smartest thing any of us ever did”

Everyone laughed.

“jessica”

Sophia continued.

“You’re the best pretend mommy who became a real mommy that anyone could ask for we love you.”

Jessica was crying. Ryan was crying. Half the reception was crying.

Later, as they danced their first dance as husband and wife, Jessica whispered.

“I can’t believe this is real.”

“Believe it,”

Ryan said.

“you’re stuck with us now”

“good”

Jessica replied.

“i wouldn’t want to be anywhere else”

Three little girls watched from the edge of the dance floor holding hands, knowing they changed everything with one brave question to a stranger.

Sometimes the most beautiful love stories start with the strangest proposals. Sometimes pretending is the first step towards something real and sometimes three six-year-old matchmakers know exactly what they are doing.
