My Best Friend Fathered My Child — So I Planned The Perfect Revenge

Part 1

I never thought a simple genealogy kit would be the match that burned my entire life to the ground.

Tyler had been my best friend since our freshman year of college.

He stood right next to me at the altar when I married Megan six years ago.

We had the kind of brotherhood where we didn’t even need to knock before walking into each other’s houses.

When Megan and I started trying for a baby, the journey was anything but easy.

Month after month ended in negative tests, silent dinners, and Megan crying quietly in the bathroom.

The fertility clinic visits became a grueling routine of cold rooms and disappointing news.

Through it all, Tyler was our rock.

He would drop by with takeout when I had to work late, keeping Megan company so she wouldn’t spiral into depression.

He told me constantly that I just needed to be patient, that our time would come.

I leaned on him heavily, sharing my deepest insecurities about my ability to be a father.

Then, the miracle finally happened.

Megan came out of the bathroom one Tuesday morning with a trembling hand and a positive test.

I cried like a baby right there on the bathroom tiles.

Naturally, when Sammy was born, making Tyler the godfather wasn’t even a question.

He was the first person outside of the delivery room to hold my son.

I still have the framed photo of Tyler looking down at Sammy with tears in his eyes.

I thought it was the beautiful emotion of a best friend sharing my joy.

I was so completely, hopelessly blind.

Sammy grew up into an energetic, amazing little boy.

Sometimes people would joke that he didn’t look much like me, pointing out his curly hair or the specific shade of his hazel eyes.

I always brushed it off, joking that he got the best parts of the milkman.

Tyler would laugh the loudest at those jokes.

The house of cards didn’t start collapsing until just a few weeks ago.

My sister had bought a batch of those popular DNA health screening kits on sale for the whole family.

Megan instantly bristled when I brought the boxes home.

She argued that big companies stealing our genetic data was a privacy nightmare.

She refused to take one and demanded I throw Sammy’s in the trash too.

I thought she was just being paranoid from reading too many internet conspiracy theories.

So, without telling her, I swabbed Sammy’s cheek while he was asleep and mailed it off with mine.

I just wanted to make sure he didn’t inherit the heart condition that runs on my father’s side.

Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting at my office desk when the notification pinged my phone.

I opened the email casually, expecting a boring breakdown of regional ancestry and health markers.

I clicked over to the familial matches tab just out of curiosity.

My eyes landed on a bold red line connecting Sammy to another registered user.

It didn’t show my brother, and it didn’t show my parents.

It showed a fifty percent DNA match with a user named Tyler H.

The screen labeled their relationship clearly: Father / Son.

My brain simply refused to process the information at first.

I stared at the glowing pixels, trying to invent a logical explanation.

Maybe there was a catastrophic mix-up at the testing lab.

Maybe it was a bizarre database error.

But then, the memories I had suppressed began to flood my mind with crushing clarity.

I remembered all those times I came home from work to find Tyler’s car in my driveway.

I remembered the way Megan would quickly close her laptop when I walked into the room.

I remembered the lingering glances they shared at our backyard barbecues when they thought I wasn’t looking.

I remembered the exact curl of Tyler’s hair, identical to the one I brushed out of Sammy’s eyes every morning.

A cold, heavy numbness started at the base of my neck and spread through my entire body.

I sat at my desk for three hours, watching the sunset cast long shadows across my office.

The man who gave the best man speech at my wedding had been sleeping with my wife in my own bed.

The son I had loved, fed, and raised for four years was not mine.

Everything I had built my identity around was a grotesque, elaborate lie orchestrated by the two people I trusted most in the world.

I finally stood up, packed my briefcase, and walked out to my car.

The drive home felt like floating outside of my own body.

When I pulled into the driveway, Tyler’s familiar truck was parked right next to Megan’s SUV.

I walked through the front door and heard them laughing together in the kitchen.

I didn’t scream, I didn’t throw punches, and I didn’t break things.

Instead, I smiled, knowing exactly how I was going to tear their perfect world apart.
