My Boss Fired Me to Appease a Billionaire — He Didn’t Know the Mafia King Was Watching\n

Part 2

The night air had hit me like a physical blow as we exited the hotel, but the heat radiating from Dan’s solid body kept me inexplicably warm.

His sleek, armored black SUV was idling at the curb, and he carefully deposited me into the plush leather interior before sliding in beside me.

The heavy door shut with a vacuum-sealed thud, cutting off the noise of the city completely.

I immediately scrambled to press myself against the opposite door, putting as much space between us as possible.

I reached down, gently massaging my swelling ankle while my mind raced in frantic circles.

“Why did you do that?”

I demanded, the shock finally wearing off to leave a sharp spike of adrenaline.

“You just cost me my career, threatened my boss, and kidnapped me.”

Dan poured two glasses of sparkling water from the car’s built-in console, offering one to me.

“I didn’t kidnap you, Megan,” he replied calmly, leaning back into the leather.

“I removed you from a burning building.”

“The hotel isn’t on fire,” I snapped, refusing the water.

“Not literally,” Dan said smoothly.

“In exactly twelve minutes, the FBI is going to raid that gala, lock the doors, and arrest the senior management of your agency.”

I stared at him, all the air leaving my lungs in a sudden rush.

“Because your boss, Brian Miller, has been using the company to launder money for the Romano family for the last three years,” Dan stated matter-of-factly.

My mind reeled as the odd accounting discrepancies and Brian’s sudden panic attacks over minor invoices clicked into place with horrifying clarity.

“Oh my god,” I whispered, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

“My signature is on half of those vendor approvals, they’re going to think I’m involved.”

“They would have,” Dan agreed, his dark eyes watching me carefully.

“Which is why you needed to leave before midnight.”

I realized then that the spilled drink and the public firing hadn’t just been a mob boss flexing his power.

It was a meticulously orchestrated extraction designed to sever me from the company legally and practically.

“You orchestrated that whole scene to get me fired on record before the feds locked down the building,” I breathed.

“Heather tripping you was an unexpected bonus, but yes, I was going to find a way to get you out,” he admitted.

“But why?”

I asked, gesturing down at my stained blazer and heavy thighs.

“I’m just an event planner, a nobody.”

Dan reached across the seat, his large hand gently wrapping around my uninjured calf.

“Because you are not a nobody, Megan,” he said, his voice dropping into a rough, intimate register.

“I’ve been watching you run my corporate events for six months, and you are brilliant.”

His thumb stroked the side of my leg, a possessive, grounding touch that made my breath hitch.

“I despise the fake, starving sycophants in that room,” he murmured.

“I prefer reality, I prefer substance.”

He leaned closer, the scent of expensive scotch and gunpowder washing over me.

“And starting tomorrow, you are going to work for me.”

I was staring at the man who had just dismantled my life and offered me an empire.

If you were sitting next to the most dangerous boss in the city, and he offered you the keys to his kingdom, would you take it?
