My Boss Said I Was Worthless — Then I Met A Deaf Stranger In The Lobby

Part 2

I stood there completely frozen in absolute shock as our incredibly powerful CEO crouched helplessly in front of the man I had just been casually chatting with.

Tyler frantically looked back and forth between his elderly father’s swiftly moving signing hands and my entirely stunned face.

He suddenly realized I was actively translating the conversation and thanked me with a profound sincerity I had never once heard in this ruthless building.

I quickly picked up my heavy leather bag, offered a deeply polite nod to both men, and practically escaped into the waiting elevator.

I had a highly critical eight o’clock vendor coordination call and I desperately needed to prep my complicated quarterly spreadsheets before Dan started yelling.

Exactly three incredibly tense hours later, our morning receptionist Megan suddenly appeared at my small desk looking like she was physically restraining herself from screaming out loud.

She leaned aggressively over my glowing computer monitor and asked in a dramatically casual, breathless whisper if I had spoken to the older man in the lobby.

I cautiously confirmed that I had indeed called up to Heather on the executive floor to announce his surprisingly unannounced arrival.

Megan forcefully pressed both of her hands perfectly flat on my cluttered desk and stared at me with completely wide, absolutely terrified eyes.

She practically whispered that the old man was Craig, the legendary, near-mythical founder who had built this entire massive logistics company from absolutely nothing.

She explained that he still personally held forty-two percent of the vital board votes, and when he unexpectedly visited Seattle, everyone in the entire industry panicked.

Megan stared at me in absolute, undeniable disbelief when I casually mentioned that we had simply sat together and chatted comfortably in sign language.

I desperately tried to act completely nonchalant about the whole situation, but underneath my carefully maintained calm exterior, something massive had finally woken up.

I eagerly went home that rainy evening and told my incredibly supportive wife Brenda the entire unbelievable story over two mugs of cold decaf coffee.

She listened with intense, careful attention and strictly told me not to shrink my own expectations just to protect myself from another crushing corporate disappointment.

She forcefully made me promise that when this bizarre encounter finally paid off, Dan’s arrogant, dismissive face would absolutely be the last thing I saw in that terrible office.

I looked deeply at my wonderful wife of sixteen long years, thinking of all the late nights, and finally allowed myself to actually feel genuine hope.

The highly anticipated phone call finally came on a remarkably bright Friday morning at exactly nine o’clock sharp.

It wasn’t Dan demanding another impossible report, and it definitely wasn’t human resources calling to discuss standard corporate policies.

It was Heather, the CEO’s notoriously protective executive assistant, politely asking me to come up to the heavily guarded executive floor immediately.

My heart pounded with terrifying force as I slowly stood up, straightened my suit jacket, and prepared to face the absolute unknown.

Dan watched me walk away from his pristine glass office with a look of deep, deeply unsettling, totally uncharacteristic confusion.

What exactly happens when you accidentally befriend the legendary founder of your massive company while your terrible, abusive boss watches from his glass tower?
