My Boss's Bird Attacked His Cousin — And Exposed A Chilling Murder

Part 1

I was explicitly warned never to look at the master of the estate, let alone the massive white bird that never left his arm.

I am an illustrator, hired by the Royal Society to document the rare birds of the Yorkshire moors.

When I arrived at the towering, isolated stone manor, the housekeeper pulled me aside with a look of pure terror.

She told me to keep my head down and stay as far away from Dan, the Duke of the estate, as physically possible.

The local tavern was full of whispers that Dan had completely lost his mind after his wife died in a tragic carriage accident three years ago.

They said he roamed the sprawling grounds with a bloodthirsty demon bird that attacked anyone who dared to come within five paces.

I knew better than to believe the superstitious rumors of frightened villagers.

My father was a master falconer, and I spent my entire childhood surrounded by the sharp scent of leather jesses and raw meat.

Birds of prey are highly intelligent creatures that do not attack without a very specific reason.

For the first two weeks of my employment, I bundled up in thick wool and kept to the freezing heather of the moors.

I never saw Dan, and I certainly never caught a glimpse of his infamous white gyrfalcon.

I spent my days quietly sketching hen harriers and golden plovers in the stark, breathtaking beauty of the estate.

Everything changed on a foggy, bitterly cold Tuesday morning when I followed the call of a merlin too far into the private grounds.

I pushed through a dense thicket of gorse and suddenly found myself standing on the edge of a vast, walled training lawn.

I froze instantly, clutching my leather-bound sketchbook tightly to my chest.

Dan stood fifty yards away, cutting a striking and imposing figure in his dark riding coat.

He looked as cold and unforgiving as the gray stone walls of his ancestral home.

Perched firmly upon his heavy leather gauntlet was the most magnificent creature I had ever seen.

It was a massive white gyrfalcon, a ghost of the tundra, with dark obsidian eyes that scanned the perimeter with lethal intensity.

But Dan was not alone on the lawn.

His ambitious cousin, Greg, had ambushed him on the private grounds.

Greg had brought two large, unsavory men from the London docks to intimidate Dan.

Greg waved a sheaf of legal documents, shouting over the biting wind.

He demanded that Dan sign over the lucrative estate deeds to cover a supposedly shared family debt.

He sneered that the magistrates were already whispering about Dan’s sanity.

He threatened to have Dan committed to an asylum and take the estate by force if necessary.

Dan stood perfectly still, his jaw clenched tight, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fury.

He warned Greg that if he took one more step onto the land, he would not call the bird off.

The tension in the air was absolutely suffocating.

From my hiding spot behind the bushes, I could see the falcon shifting its weight nervously from foot to foot.

Its wings were half-mantled, and it was picking up on the intense radiating hostility from Dan and the aggressive posturing of the thugs.

A bird of prey feeds entirely on the emotional energy of its handler.

Greg sneered, mocking Dan for threatening him with a bird, and gestured sharply to his massive hired men.

He ordered them to restrain Dan and break the bird’s neck if it tried to fly.

The two thugs lunged forward simultaneously.

Dan didn’t even have time to issue a command before the falcon reacted to the sudden, violent shift in the air.

With a terrifying, guttural shriek that echoed off the manor walls, the massive white bird launched himself from Dan’s arm.

It was an absolute explosion of predatory violence.

The bird bypassed Greg completely and slammed feet-first into the chest of the closest thug.

The man screamed in agony as four-inch talons pierced his heavy wool coat and tore into his shoulder.

The falcon’s powerful wings battered the man’s face in a blinding flurry of white feathers.

The second thug panicked and drew a heavy, lead-weighted truncheon from his coat.

He raised the weapon high, preparing to strike the magnificent bird out of the air.

I couldn’t stop the scream that tore from my throat.

I burst from the thicket, dropping my paints and sketchbook onto the frosty grass.

The sudden movement and the piercing sound of my voice broke the chaotic rhythm of the fight.

The thug swung his truncheon wildly, but the falcon banked sharply and narrowly avoided the lethal blow.

Disoriented by the sheer volume of screaming men and the sudden appearance of a stranger sprinting toward them, the bird’s predatory instinct spiraled into sheer panic.

The gyrfalcon gained altitude rapidly, circling tightly in the gray sky.

His dark eyes locked onto the new rushing target, which was me.

Dan roared for me to get back and run, his stoic facade shattering into absolute terror.

He pulled a brass whistle from his coat and blew frantically to issue the recall command.

But the panicked bird was completely deaf to it.

The massive white falcon folded its wings into a teardrop shape and dropped from the sky like a stone, aiming its razor-sharp talons straight for my face.
