My Boyfriend Whispered A Death Threat At Dinner — The Stranger At The Next Table Heard Everything
Part 2
The next morning, I woke to the smell of brewing coffee and a fresh wave of dread.
Craig appeared in the bedroom doorway holding two mugs, his expression completely unreadable.
He set one carefully on my nightstand without saying a single word.
“I’m heading to the warehouse early,” he said coldly.
“We’ll talk about your embarrassing behavior when I get home tonight.”
“Okay,” I whispered, pulling the heavy blankets up to my chin.
After he left the apartment, I lay in bed for twenty minutes just listening to the absolute silence.
This was how the vicious cycle always went.
The threat hung heavy over my head all day, building the dread until I felt physically sick.
I finally got up, showered, and dressed in comfortable jeans and a bright red sweater.
Looking at myself in the bathroom mirror, I barely recognized the hollow woman staring back at me.
My phone buzzed loudly on the counter, startling me out of my trance.
It was a text from Heather, my coworker and closest friend.
She wanted to meet for coffee to complain about her disastrous date from the night before.
I almost declined out of habit, knowing Craig hated when I went out without his explicit permission.
But he was at work, and I desperately needed to get out of those suffocating walls.
At the coffee shop, I listened to Heather talk, but my mind kept drifting to the hidden business card.
“Your turn,” Heather said finally, studying my face with concern.
“How was your fancy anniversary dinner?”
I wanted to lie and say it was fine, but the hot tears spilled over before I could stop them.
I told her everything, including the terrifying threat and the stranger’s unexpected intervention.
“He said he could arrange a safe place and a real job,” I told her, wiping my wet cheeks.
“Brian Robinson?”
Heather gasped, her brown eyes widening in pure shock.
“Megan, that’s huge, he’s a massive tech CEO.”
“Did you call him yet?”
“No, I don’t know if I can trust him,” I admitted quietly.
“What if it’s some kind of cruel trick?”
“Or what if it’s the exact way out you’ve been too terrified to look for?”
Heather countered softly.
My phone buzzed again with a demanding text from Craig asking exactly where I was.
My entire body tensed instinctively at his name on the screen.
I hurried back to the apartment in a complete daze, my mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
I pulled the business card from my jewelry box and stared at the crisp black lettering.
My fingers trembled violently as I dialed the cell number.
“This is Brian,” a calm, warm voice answered on the second ring.
My throat closed up completely in a sudden rush of panic.
“If you can’t speak right now, just stay on the line,” he added gently.
I took a deep, shaking breath and finally found my voice.
“It’s the woman from the restaurant,” I croaked.
He asked if I was safe and offered to meet me at a public cafe in thirty minutes.
I agreed, hanging up the phone with a wildly beating heart.
Would this stranger really follow through, or was I walking into an even more dangerous trap?
