My Cellmate Revealed The Dark Reason Behind His Nickname — And I Cried My Eyes Out

Part 1
The concrete walls of my cell always felt closer during the night shift.
I had been sharing that cramped six-by-eight box with a guy named Brian for three months.
Everyone on the block just called him Fuse.
He never explained the nickname to anyone.
He mostly kept to himself, reading worn-out paperbacks and staring at the ceiling.
But one rainy Tuesday evening, the rhythmic drumming against our barred window changed something in him.
He put his book down and let out a long, ragged exhale.
He stared at the gray wall and finally told me how he earned that name.
He started by telling me about a girl named Maria.
The way his voice softened when he said her name transformed the hardened convict sitting across from me.
She was his entire world before the judge slammed the gavel down.
He described her as playful, fiercely loyal, and incredibly beautiful.
But she also possessed a wicked, relentless sense of humor.
She thrived on keeping him on his toes with elaborate practical jokes.
She thought blasting an air horn directly next to his ear while he was dead asleep was hilarious.
She would stretch clear plastic wrap over the toilet seat in the middle of the night.
She even managed to sneak his phone away and change the language to Japanese.
Brian always laughed it off, shaking his head at her boundless chaotic energy.
Eventually, his competitive side flared up.
He decided he needed to get her back.
He thought it would be funny to swap her expensive shampoo with industrial-strength hair removal cream.
He imagined she would get a tiny bald patch and they would laugh about it later.
He gravely underestimated the severity of his little prank.
She did not notice the chemical switch until she was already deep into her morning shower.
Half of her gorgeous dark hair came out in massive thick clumps.
The harsh chemicals washed down her face and got directly into her eyes.
They burned her corneas so badly that she could not see anything for three entire days.
He had to rush her to the emergency room in the middle of the night.
She absolutely did not laugh when the doctors finally discharged her.
She flatly told him she was leaving him for good.
She packed a large duffel bag and set it by the front door.
But for some mysterious reason, she never actually walked out.
He smugly figured he had won their little war.
He could not have been more wrong.
Exactly one week later, she cooked him a beautiful apology dinner.
She laid out a massive spread of his favorite carne asada tacos.
Brian eagerly took a massive bite, noticing a strangely bitter aftertaste right away.
By the third bite, his mouth felt like it was coated in actual lava.
By the fifth bite, his throat closed up entirely and he could not draw a breath.
She had secretly blended dozens of Carolina Reaper peppers into the meat marinade.
His throat swelled up so fast he thought he was suffocating on dry land.
He collapsed onto the kitchen floor and started violently vomiting up blood.
The extreme heat of the peppers had literally ruptured his esophagus.
Paramedics arrived just in time to load him onto a stretcher.
They had to pump his stomach and surgically drain the blood pooling in his chest cavity.
He spent two agonizing weeks trapped in a hospital bed.
When he finally got discharged, Maria met him at the door.
She calmly stated that they were officially even.
She proposed a clean slate with absolutely no more pranks.
Brian nodded, smiled at her, and agreed to the truce.
But he was lying through his teeth.
He spent the next thirty days meticulously planning something significantly bigger.
He aggressively wanted her to feel the exact same terror he felt choking on his own blood.
Then, one sunny Sunday morning, the anger just instantly evaporated.
He was sitting at the kitchen table watching her make breakfast.
She was singing completely off-key and dancing a little salsa step while flipping eggs.
He looked at her and realized he did not want revenge anymore.
He just desperately, selfishly wanted her.
He abandoned his dark plans and decided to treat her to a luxurious home spa day.
It took him an entire week of gentle persuasion before she finally agreed to let her guard down.
When Saturday rolled around, he executed his romantic plan perfectly.
He gave her an hour-long back massage using that incredibly expensive lavender oil she loved.
He lit dozens of vanilla candles all over the tiny bathroom.
He ran her a perfectly warm bubble bath and scattered fresh red rose petals across the surface.
She sank into the hot water and finally looked completely peaceful for the first time in months.
Brian sat carefully on the slippery edge of the porcelain tub.
He brought in his nail kit and started carefully painting her fingernails a deep crimson.
When he finished the last coat of polish, he reached for the hairdryer.
He just wanted to set the polish faster so she could relax without smudging them.
It was an incredibly old, cheap hairdryer they had bought at a thrift store years ago.
The black power cord was heavily frayed near the base of the handle.
He was holding the heavy plastic nozzle right over her dripping wet hands when the frayed cord caught on the edge of the sink.
