My Dead Wife’s Face Hung In A Billionaire’s Mansion — Her Hidden Life Revealed

Part 2

Inside the wooden box sat a incredibly thick stack of complex documents and confusing financial papers that made absolutely no logical sense to me.

At the very top of the massive pile lay a pristine, laminated corporate identification card.

It bore a perfectly clear, brightly lit photograph of Megan’s beautiful, smiling face.

But the name printed boldly next to her familiar photo read “Rachel Barnes, Senior Analyst, Hayes Global Foundation.”

I sat incredibly hard on the cold wooden floor with my back resting firmly against the edge of my bed.

I stared blankly and in total shock at the laminated card trembling in my shaking hand.

This was actually, terrifyingly real.

My seemingly normal wife had been living an entirely separate, incredibly dangerous double life.

She had lied flawlessly to me about exactly who she was, what she actually did every single day, and everything else in between.

Sam appeared silently like a ghost in the dark bedroom doorway rubbing sleep from his tired, puffy eyes.

“Dad, is Mom still alive?”

The incredibly innocent question violently broke something deep inside my aching chest.

I looked softly at my young son and saw the heartbreaking, agonizing mix of desperate hope and deep confusion shining in his dark eyes.

“No, buddy.”

“Mom is still gone.”

“I just found some of her old things she left safely behind for us.”

Sam’s small, fragile shoulders slumped forward in obvious, crushing disappointment.

“I thought maybe she was alive because you look really sad and really, really surprised.”

“You look exactly like that sad time when you finally found her lost wedding ring hiding behind the living room couch.”

I set the heavy identification card down very carefully on the floorboards.

I held out my strong arms welcomingly toward him.

Sam came directly to me immediately and crawled right into my lap even though he was getting far too big for it.

I held him incredibly tightly against my fiercely protective chest.

I felt the deeply comforting warmth of his small body and the steady, calming rhythm of his slow breathing.

“I miss her too,” Sam whispered wetly into my shoulder.

“I know, buddy.”

“I know.”

The very next morning, I called in sick to the strict delivery company for the absolute first time in two solid years.

I took Sam safely to his loud elementary school.

I drove straight downtown to the towering, intimidating glass and steel offices of the powerful Hayes Global Foundation.

I felt completely and utterly out of place walking boldly through the immaculate, shining lobby in my worn, faded jacket and heavy, scuffed work boots.

The polished receptionist at the massive front desk was very polite but incredibly, stubbornly firm.

She insisted repeatedly that I could not possibly see Brenda Hayes without a previously scheduled appointment.

She told me coldly that I could not simply wait in the busy, corporate lobby.

She refused aggressively to give me any contact information whatsoever about their former, missing employees.

I was just about to leave in incredibly deep frustration when an older, distinguished man in an expensive gray suit emerged quickly from the sleek elevators.

He glanced casually at me, did a sharp, stunned double take, and walked very quickly over to exactly where I stood.

“You’re the delivery driver from the mansion last night,” he stated quietly and firmly.

“Yes.”

“I’m Dan Porter.”

“I was Rachel Barnes’s personal attorney.”

He looked around the bustling lobby nervously and lowered his deep voice to a harsh, secretive whisper.

“We should seriously talk about what she actually found.”

“Not here.”

We walked silently to a quiet, nearly empty coffee shop three blocks away.

Dan ordered bitter black coffee and waited patiently until we were completely alone in a dark back corner booth before speaking.

“Brenda Hayes called me early this morning and told me everything about you.”

“What exactly do you know about Rachel?” I asked him directly and intensely.

“I know for a fact she was about to blow open the absolutely biggest corruption scandal in this entire foundation’s history,” Dan replied incredibly grimly.

“I know she had concrete, undeniable evidence that Craig Mitchell, the powerful chairman of the board, was actively embezzling millions of dollars from our critical international aid programs.”

“I know she came directly to me with stolen documents and secret recordings we desperately needed to finally take him down for good.”

Dan paused heavily, his weathered, lined expression turning completely dark and haunted.

“And I know with utter certainty that exactly two weeks before we were supposed to boldly file the damning report, she mysteriously and completely vanished.”

“Then I heard briefly about a terrible fire in a cheap apartment across town where a woman named Megan Evans tragically died.”

“I didn’t make the terrifying, sickening connection until Brenda called me today.”

“Why didn’t you investigate her sudden death?” I demanded angrily and loudly.

“I tried desperately, but the crucial evidence Rachel gave me completely vanished from my secure safe.”

“My private, locked office was broken into.”

“The critical, damning files were completely gone.”

“Without her verbal testimony and without those specific documents, I had absolutely nothing to go on.”

Dan leaned intensely forward across the small, sticky table.

“If you have absolutely anything she left behind, it could easily be the single key to reopening this entire massive case.”

I thought deeply about the incredibly heavy wooden box sitting abandoned on my kitchen table.

I thought furiously about what else might be secretly hidden inside its depths.

“I need to check something important first,” I told him, standing up incredibly quickly.

I rushed recklessly home and emptied the wooden box completely onto the living room floor.

Hidden perfectly beneath the false velvet lining at the very bottom, wrapped carefully in soft cloth, was a small, black USB drive.

I borrowed a cheap, incredibly slow laptop from my elderly neighbor.

My heavy heart pounded painfully against my ribs as I plugged the small drive into the side port.

The mysterious drive contained exactly one single video file.

I clicked it open with a trembling finger.

Megan’s beautiful face instantly filled the glowing screen.

She looked incredibly, overwhelmingly exhausted and deeply, genuinely terrified.

The video quality was extremely grainy, clearly recorded hastily on her old cell phone.

The background was undeniably the very apartment we shared happily together.

It was the exact apartment she supposedly died in.

“Tyler,” her sweet voice trembled softly and brokenly through the tinny speakers.

My dry throat closed up instantly and painfully.

“If you are watching this video, I am probably already dead.”

I squeezed my tired eyes shut, fresh, hot tears burning fiercely behind my closed eyelids.

What horrifying secret had my wife been carrying all these years?
