My Ex-Boyfriend Served Me At A Soup Kitchen — And It Changed My Life Forever
Part 2
Hearing him say my name shattered the final remnant of my fragile armor.
The heavy corporate hardness he normally carried melted away from his expression instantly.
It was replaced by an incredibly pure, radiant warmth that I had not seen in a decade.
He slowly tore his gaze away from my haunted eyes and looked down at the tiny girl bundled in my arms.
He softly asked who the little girl was, his tone completely void of judgment.
I drew in a long, shaky breath, tightly gripping Emily’s waist.
I explained that this was my daughter Emily and that she was exactly three years old.
A look of pure, unguarded tenderness took over his features.
He murmured that she was an absolutely gorgeous little girl.
Hearing that simple compliment chipped away at the icy fortress I had built around myself.
Moving efficiently, he pulled out two heavy ceramic bowls.
He ladled the hearty stew until it nearly spilled over the edges.
Then he grabbed a side plate and piled it high with thick slices of warm bread.
He slid the loaded tray across the polished metal surface to me.
He told me to head toward the back left corner, right next to the old radiator.
He mentioned it was the coziest spot in the entire building.
I whispered a shaky thank-you that barely made it past my lips.
Gripping the plastic tray with white knuckles, I practically ran away from the counter.
I knew if I stayed there any longer, my legs would give out completely.
Dodging through the maze of occupied tables, I located the quiet nook he suggested.
I peeled the oversized coat off Emily and helped her into a sturdy chair.
The instant the hot liquid hit her tongue, her shivering finally stopped.
She devoured the meal with the laser focus of a starving child.
I just sat there watching her, my insides churning with a mix of gratitude and heartbreak.
In this singular moment, my baby girl had everything she needed.
I was so mesmerized by her eating that I didn’t hear him walk over.
A sudden shadow draping over the table made me jump.
My head snapped up to see him setting down another small tray.
It held two enormous mugs of cocoa, overflowing with melting marshmallows.
Next to the drinks sat some decorated sugar cookies and a plush teddy bear holding a tiny heart.
He rested his hands casually on the back of an empty chair.
He murmured that he wanted to bring the little one a treat.
He immediately apologized, hoping he wasn’t overstepping any boundaries.
Emily’s dull eyes suddenly sparkled like she had just seen magic.
She stared up at him in total awe.
She whispered, asking if the fuzzy toy was really for her.
He flashed a warm, dimpled smile and told her it was all hers.
He then pulled out the chair directly across from me and sat down.
He seemed to hesitate for a long moment, carefully studying my tired face.
He finally broke the silence, asking in a low gentle tone if it would be all right for us to talk.
I stared at my calloused hands resting on my lap, genuinely having no idea where to even begin.
Would he truly understand the massive terrifying abyss that now separated us?
