My Ex-Wife Called My New Neighbor a Stalker — She Didn’t Know We Shared a 17-Year Secret

Part 2

Megan did not stop with me.

She spread the insidious rumor through the neighborhood the way she spread everything.

Casually, which for Megan meant surgically.

A concerned whisper at the mailboxes.

A raised eyebrow over a cup of coffee with a neighbor.

She never said the word stalker out loud to anyone but me.

She did not need to.

She just placed the ugly idea like a dark seed and let other people water it.

Within a week, the neighbor

down the street called me on the phone.

Her voice was tight and genuinely worried.

She asked if it was strictly true that the woman next door had actively followed me here.

The malicious rumor had moved through the street the way water moves through cracks in old plaster.

Silently and everywhere.

It is completely impossible to stop once it starts.

That night, I walked across the dark yard and knocked firmly on Heather’s door.

The dog came bounding out to greet me.

His heavy tail swung wide and happy.

His wet nose pressed affectionately into my knee.

Nothing in the air between the two houses had changed for him.

But Heather appeared in the doorway, and I could vividly see in her face that she already knew why I was there.

I did not try to ease into it.

I asked her directly if she bought the expensive house because she absolutely knew I lived next door.

The heavy silence that followed was long enough to hear the entire street settle into the night.

She did not deny it.

She did not look away either.

She slowly lowered herself onto the wooden porch steps.

The dog leaned his full weight against her leg for comfort.

She looked at the ground for a long moment, then lifted her eyes directly to mine.

She admitted it quietly.

She told me she chose the city strictly for the work, but she definitely chose this specific house because of me.

She spoke even more quietly, as though she were placing something fragile on a hard surface.

She swore softly she did not come here to demand anything.

She did not come expecting anything to happen.

She just wanted to be close.

I stood completely frozen there on her walkway.

My jaw clenched until my teeth ground together.

Megan had taken a quiet act of devotion and twisted it into something grotesque.

She had weaponized a memory into a blade.

My hands tightened into fists at my sides.

But the solid ground beneath my boots suddenly felt soft and uncertain.

Heather had kept the full truth buried out of sight.

A withheld truth always feels like a heavy door pulled shut in your face.

A heavy weight pressed against my ribs, making it hard to draw a full breath.

I stared down at the concrete walkway.

I walked home without saying another word.

I sat heavily on the porch chair in the dark.

I watched the warm lights inside Heather’s house go out one by one.

Room by room.

Until her side of the fence was completely dark and silent.

I had built a wall around my life to keep from being hurt again, but as I watched the lights go out in her house one by one, I didn’t know if I was locking out a threat, or walking away from the only person who had ever truly seen me—what would you have done?
