My Family Voted To Kick Me Out On the holiday — Then I Opened My Folder

Part 2

The room went so still that the ice melting in glasses sounded loud.

My father Dan cleared his throat and suggested we all calm down.

I smiled without a trace of warmth.

Nobody wanted to calm down when they were applauding me out of the family just minutes ago.

Heather finally snatched the folder out of Craig’s trembling hands.

He lunged to grab it back, but she stood up and stepped quickly away from him.

She turned the first page.

Her face shifted from confusion to sheer horror.

She was staring at a printed copy of a loan application for fifty-eight thousand dollars.

It had been submitted to a bank in the city three weeks earlier with my name listed as a financial guarantor.

It included my full legal name, my birthday, and an old address I had not used in years.

Right underneath it was a forged signature that I had never seen.

The bank’s fraud department had emailed me a warning after flagging the suspicious application.

Craig looked at me like I had pulled a weapon at dinner.

Paper could not be shouted down or charmed away.

Paper did not care that he spent his whole life making everyone believe he was the successful son.

Heather whispered that Craig had told her I offered to help.

Craig stared at the floor without saying a word.

She turned another page and found the tab labeled ‘the money trail’.

It documented the ninety-seven thousand dollars I had handed out over the years to keep everyone afloat.

My mother Diane stood halfway from her chair and asked why I would bring this here.

I told her I just brought the receipts to the humiliation they planned for me.

Heather turned to the final tab.

It contained a hotel receipt from Aspen marked as client entertainment.

Right next to it was a screenshot of a text message from a woman named Kelly.

She had written about how much she missed waking up next to him.

Heather’s hand flew to her mouth as someone gasped.

She looked at Craig with tears spilling down her cheeks.

She asked him how long this had been going on.

Craig turned red and yelled that this was private.

I reminded him that my bank transfers and the insults they made behind my back were also private.

Privacy only seemed to matter when it protected him.

My cousin Laura stared at the floor, suddenly ashamed of the laptop I had bought her.

Craig pointed a shaking finger at me and called me insane for keeping records on my own family.

I watched the entire performance collapse around him.

I asked him the one question he couldn’t answer: “What else did you think I was doing on those long nights you called me the boring sister?”
