My Family Worshipped My Broke Brother — Until I Dropped My Secret At Thanksgiving

Part 2

I set my water glass down carefully on the table.

The entire room was staring at me in awkward silence.

I looked my mother dead in the eyes and told her I had already settled down perfectly fine.

I explained that I just didn’t bother inviting people into my home who constantly doubted my potential.

My mother’s fork clattered loudly against her porcelain plate.

Brian’s incredibly smug smile completely froze on his face.

I casually mentioned that I bought a house eight full months ago.

Brian tried to force a laugh, asking if I had finally managed to scrape together enough for a little condo downtown.

I kept my voice perfectly even and told him it was actually a custom-built home on three acres of private land.

I made sure to add that it was more than twice the size of his brand-new subdivision place.

My aunt gasped loudly from the end of the table and demanded to know exactly how big it was.

When I clearly stated the square footage, Brian’s jaw actually dropped open in pure shock.

My mother tried to instantly diminish my accomplishment like she always did.

She stammered that taking on a mortgage for a place that massive must be a terrible financial strain for a single woman.

I took another calm bite of my thanksgiving dinner.

I told her I didn’t have a mortgage to worry about because I paid for the entire property in cash.

Brian violently choked on his drink, coughing into his napkin.

My mother went completely pale, staring at me like I was a total stranger.

She desperately tried to save face, quickly praising Brian’s heavily-financed home as a smart, secure investment in a great neighborhood.

I turned directly to my brother and asked what kind of interest rate he managed to secure with a credit score in the low five hundreds.

The dining room table went dead silent.

Brian turned bright red, slamming his hand down, and demanded to know what I was talking about.

I leaned forward, locking eyes with him.

I systematically exposed exactly what I had found during my deep dive into his background.

I laid out his five maxed-out credit cards, his recent auto loan defaults, and the two hundred thousand dollars in consumer debt he was desperately hiding.

I asked him exactly how much of our mother’s precious retirement fund he had drained for his down payment.

My mother looked at her golden boy in absolute horror as the truth finally clicked in her head.

Brian jumped up aggressively from his chair, shaking with uncontained rage.

He screamed that I had absolutely no right to look into his private financial affairs.

I stood up slowly and grabbed my coat from the back of my chair.

I told them I was a chief technology officer and a self-made millionaire because I actually worked for my success instead of pretending.

I looked at my mother one last time before leaving.

I told her she completely missed out on knowing her highly successful daughter because she was too busy funding her golden child’s expensive delusions.

I walked out into the freezing November air and drove back to my fully paid-off mansion.

Two weeks later, my mother texted me begging for emergency financial help to save Brian from impending bankruptcy.

I blocked all of their numbers without a second thought.

Do you think I went too far by exposing his financial ruin in front of everyone?
