My Fiancé Publicly Dumped Me for Being Overweight — Now I'm the Most Feared Woman in the City

Part 1

I stood near the extravagant ice sculpture, acutely aware of how much space I took up in the ballroom.

The deep emerald green dress was a custom creation I had sewn myself.

I was only here for Craig.

He was a junior partner at a corporate law firm, and for the last three years, my fiancé.

A voice purred behind me, sharp and completely devoid of empathy.

Heather, a real estate heiress built like a runway model, looked me up and down.

She asked if I needed to sit down because my ankles looked terribly swollen.

I forced a polite smile, letting the heat burn in my cheeks, and told her I was just waiting for Craig’s speech.

The jazz band abruptly stopped playing.

Craig stepped up to the microphone at the center of the opulent room.

He began by thanking everyone for coming to the charity gala.

I beamed, feeling a familiar swell of pride in my chest.

Then his eyes locked directly onto mine.

His smile vanished, replaced by a look of profound, cold detachment.

He spoke smoothly into the microphone, his voice echoing through the silent room.

He announced that for the past three years, he had been tied to a woman who did not fit the picture of where he was going.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

My heart slammed violently against my ribs.

Craig pointed directly at me.

Five hundred pairs of eyes turned, judging my round face, my thick arms, my entire existence.

He stated clearly that he needed a partner who actually matched his ambition.

He reached out his hand toward the front row.

Heather stepped forward, wearing a triumphant, predatory smirk.

She took his hand and joined him on the stage.

Craig announced they had been seeing each other for six months and that he finally realized what a real partnership looked like.

The silence in the room broke into a horrific crescendo of stifled giggles and outright laughter.

The humiliation was a physical weight crushing my chest.

Now he was using my public destruction as a theatrical prop to launch his new power-couple status.

I turned and pushed my way through the suffocating crowd.

People didn’t even try to hide their snickers as I shoved past them.

I burst through the heavy mahogany doors and ran straight for the side exit.

I collapsed against the brick wall of the alleyway, unable to catch my breath.

I didn’t notice the sleek, armored black car idling in the shadows.

A deep, gravelly voice cut through the sound of the falling rain, calling Craig a fool.

My head snapped up.

Standing over me was a man who seemed to swallow the ambient light of the alley.

He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed old money and hidden violence.

Dan was the head of the city’s most feared syndicate, a man who allegedly controlled the docks.

I choked out a demand for him to go away, asking if I hadn’t provided a good enough show for one night.

He pulled a pristine silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and held it out to me.

He stated that he didn’t find the public butchering of loyalty entertaining, but deeply offensive.

I snatched the handkerchief, bitter and defensive, telling him I was going to pack my bags and disappear.

He stepped closer, the aura of danger around him completely palpable.

He told me that running away would only prove them right.

A spark of anger finally ignited through my sorrow.

I told him he didn’t know what it was like to be looked at with disgust every single day.

He conceded that point, but added he knew exactly what it was like to be underestimated, and he knew how to destroy people for it.

He promised that if I listened, Craig and every parasite in that ballroom would never dare look down on me again.

Ten minutes later, I found myself sitting in the heated leather seats of his armored car.

He poured a glass of amber liquid from a crystal decanter and handed it to me.

I clutched my damp dress around my knees, asking what a man like him could possibly want from me.

He explained that federal agents were painting him as a ruthless, violent predator to secure wiretap warrants.

Changing the narrative was his only option.

A grounded, stable family man was exactly what the optics required.

He needed a wife.

I almost laughed, telling him to go hire a supermodel who would kill for his money.

He shook his head, explaining that the feds would see right through a trophy wife.

He looked deliberately at my full figure.

He told me I was ordinary, soft, and the exact opposite of what the world expected him to choose.

He needed a woman a man would marry for one reason only: genuine love.

I felt a flush of indignation, asking if I was just the perfect pathetic cover story.

He ordered me not to insult myself, stating I was a woman who built a life with a parasite only to have him feed on me.

He pulled a leather portfolio from the seat beside him.

He promised that in exchange for my absolute public devotion, I would have a security detail that would make me untouchable.

Most importantly, a dark smile curved his lips as he offered to hand me the absolute ruin of Craig and Heather on a silver platter.

I asked what would happen if I simply said no.

He coldly replied that he would let me walk to the train station, and watch Craig become a state senator while I went back to being treated like garbage.

The image of Craig’s smug face and Heather’s mocking laugh flashed in my mind.

Society had decided my worth was intrinsically tied to the size of my waist.

I decided I was done playing by their rules.

He slid a binding two-year marriage contract across the table.
