My Housekeeper’s Toddler Was Scrubbing My Shirts in the Dark — The Reason Why Made Me Break Down in Tears

Part 2

The tiny, impeccably tidy cottage was suffocatingly hot and smelled strongly of cheap rubbing alcohol.

Rosa was lying completely motionless on her narrow twin bed, her pale face glistening with a terrifying sheen of fever sweat.

A thin, threadbare blanket was pulled up to her trembling chin.

Her eyes flew open in absolute panic the second my shadow crossed the doorway.

She desperately tried to push herself up onto her weak elbows, but her arms simply gave out underneath her.

“Mr. Harrison.”

Her voice was a dry, painful rasp that barely carried across the tiny room.

“I am so deeply sorry, sir.”

She looked frantically around the room for her daughter.

“I didn’t want you to think I was neglecting my duties.”

I knelt down right beside her bed, ignoring the dampness still clinging to my ruined suit pants.

“Rosa, please stop talking right now.”

My voice was surprisingly firm, though my hands were shaking as I pulled my phone out of my jacket pocket.

“You are incredibly sick, and you are terrified of losing your job.”

Rosa’s exhausted eyes immediately welled up with thick, shameful tears.

“I told Sofia to stay completely quiet so I could just sleep off the fever.”

She let out a ragged, painful sob.

“I didn’t know she was bothering you in the main house.”

“She wasn’t bothering me, Rosa.”

I dialed my private physician’s emergency number with my thumb.

“She was standing on a bucket in freezing water, violently scrubbing my dress shirts.”

All the remaining color instantly drained from Rosa’s feverish face.

She covered her mouth with her trembling hands in absolute horror.

“I am not upset about the laundry, Rosa.”

I reached out and gently placed my hand over her burning forehead.

“Your three-year-old daughter is the bravest, kindest human being I have ever had the privilege of meeting.”

I ordered my doctor to arrive at the estate within twenty minutes, completely ignoring his protests about the late hour.

Sofia quietly climbed up onto my lap without asking for permission, wrapping her freezing arms around my neck.

I took off my heavy, dry suit jacket and wrapped it securely around her shivering little shoulders.

Rosa watched the billionaire owner of the estate holding her daughter like a priceless treasure, her eyes wide with total disbelief.

The doctor diagnosed a severe case of influenza compounded by sheer physical exhaustion.

I explicitly ordered him to prescribe the best medication available and bill my personal accounts directly.

“But who will manage the house this week?”

Rosa asked weakly as the doctor packed up his medical bag.

“Your salary is already paid in full for the month, and I am hiring a private nurse to stay here until you recover.”

I carried a sleeping Sofia back to the main house and tucked her into a spare bedroom down the hall from my suite.

For the first time in five agonizing years, my massive house didn’t feel like a cold, echoing tomb.

I canceled a week’s worth of international meetings the next morning, sending my entire corporate office into a blind panic.

My senior partner, Craig Peterson, immediately threatened to fly out and confront me about my sudden absence.

I was sitting on my kitchen floor, happily letting a toddler teach me how to bake chocolate chip cookies.
