My Husband Boasted I'd Get Nothing In Our Divorce — Then The Judge Read My Envelope And Said

Part 1

I still remember the exact temperature of that courtroom.

It was 68 degrees, cold enough that I had to keep my hands clasped in my lap to stop them from shaking.

I wasn’t shaking from fear, though.

Greg probably thought that was why I looked so still and quiet.

I was shaking because I had been waiting for this exact moment for eighteen long months.

The courtroom smelled like old wood and stale paper.

It had those high ceilings that made every single sound echo into the rafters.

Greg sat three tables away from me with his expensive lawyer.

His lawyer wore a custom suit that probably cost more than most people’s monthly mortgage payment.

And right behind Greg, sitting in the front row of the gallery, was Megan.

She wore a cream-colored dress that I knew cost over four thousand dollars.

I knew the price because I had seen the charge on his credit card just last month.

Her legs were crossed elegantly.

She had this sickening smile on her face like she had already won the lottery.

I suppose she really thought she had.

Greg looked undeniably good.

I have to admit that he always knew how to present himself to a crowd.

He wore a charcoal gray suit and a crisp white shirt.

His hair was styled perfectly, not a single strand out of place.

He sat with his shoulders pulled back and his chin held high.

He looked like a man who owned the entire room.

For the past two hours, I had watched him testify about our marriage.

With every word that came out of his mouth, he rewrote our shared history just a little bit more.

He claimed I contributed to the household as a wonderful homemaker.

His voice was smooth and confident as he told the judge his lies.

Then he started talking about his real estate empire.

He claimed his business success was built entirely through his own hard work.

He spoke about his own vision and his own financial risk-taking.

He actually looked the judge in the eye and said he started with absolutely nothing.

Nothing.

I kept my face perfectly neutral when he said that.

Deep down, I wanted to laugh or maybe scream.

His lawyer presented their case like a carefully choreographed performance.

He showed documents listing every property and every business asset.

He showed every bank account, all conveniently registered in Greg’s name alone.

Everything belonged to his primary development company.

He made it sound so incredibly simple to the court.

Greg built a company while I stayed home and did nothing.

Greg succeeded through his own sweat and tears.

Therefore, Greg gets to keep what is rightfully his.

His lawyer adjusted his expensive glasses and made a generous offer.

He said Greg was prepared to offer reasonable spousal support for a short transitional period.

But the business assets and the properties belonged to him alone.

Judge Brenda Davis listened to all of this without much expression.

She was in her mid-fifties with sharp eyes and gray hair pulled back into a neat bun.

I had researched her extensively before the hearing.

She had spent twenty-five years on the family court bench.

She had seen every trick in the book.

I was desperately counting on that fact.

Now we were in the final stretch of the hearing.

It was time for the asset division discussion.

Greg’s lawyer stood up again, holding another thick folder of documents.

He asked to address the division of assets.

But then Greg suddenly interrupted his own lawyer.

Greg stood up himself, puffing out his chest.

His lawyer touched his arm like he was trying to stop him.

Greg shook him off dismissively.

He told the judge he wanted to say something.

Judge Davis raised one eyebrow and reminded him he had already given his testimony.

Greg insisted that it needed to be said clearly.

He turned and looked directly at me for the very first time all day.

His eyes were hard and completely cold.

This was the Greg I had come to know over the past few years.

This was not the man I had married fifteen years ago.

He told the court that I was trying to claim half of everything he built.

He paused, clearly savoring this dramatic moment.

Then he looked at me and boasted that I would never touch his money again.

The words hung in the cold air of the courtroom.

Someone in the gallery actually gasped softly.

I did not move a single muscle.

I did not blink.

I just kept my hands folded neatly in my lap.

Then Megan leaned forward from her seat in the gallery.

Her voice was sugar-sweet and absolutely poisonous.

She agreed with him, calling him honey right there in open court.

The sheer audacity it took to do that was almost impressive.

Greg smiled that same self-satisfied smile he had been wearing all morning.

His lawyer looked uncomfortable, but he did not contradict his paying client.

Judge Davis turned her sharp gaze to me.

She asked if I had a response to my husband’s statement.

I could feel every single pair of eyes in that room watching me.

Greg probably expected me to break down crying or make a pathetic scene.

The old version of me might have done exactly that.

But I was not that woman anymore.

I told the judge quietly that I would let my evidence speak for me.

My attorney, Dan, stood up beside me.

He was a quiet man with kind eyes who made people constantly underestimate him.

He had been doing this job for thirty-five years.

He was very, very good at what he did.

Dan told the judge we had some additional documentation before concluding the proceedings.

He walked forward and handed a sealed manila envelope directly to the bailiff.

The bailiff carried the thick envelope up to the judge’s bench.

There were maybe twenty pages sealed inside that envelope.

I had sealed it myself late last night.

My hands had been perfectly steady, even though my heart was racing.

Judge Davis took the envelope and looked at it curiously.

She asked Dan what this new evidence was.

Dan replied that it addressed Greg’s claims about the origin of his assets.

The judge broke the seal and pulled out the thick stack of documents.
