My Husband Threatened to Divorce me if I Didn’t Take Care of My MIL and her unborn child. But When!

The Foundation of Conflict

Hello everyone, my name is Michelle. Before getting married, I led a seemingly perfect life with a stable job and was engaged to the man of my dreams. Let me share a bit about my background to set the stage for my story. I come from a middle-class family, and we lived in a cozy house in the suburbs.

My life took a dramatic turn for the worse when I lost both of my parents shortly after graduating from high school. I still find myself blaming myself at times, but with ongoing therapy, I am learning to accept this loss. After my parents passed, I was thrust into reality.

They had saved for my college education, but I had to use that money for their funeral expenses. They had also recently bought our house, leaving little in the way of savings. Consequently, my plans for college were dashed, and I was left to fend for myself while mourning the loss of my family.

Reflecting on those days still brings me pain. I worked tirelessly in minimum wage jobs until I secured a position as a receptionist which brought some stability back into my life. During this stable phase, I met Anthony through a dating website, and we quickly connected.

He has a sister, Alice, with whom I share a strong and enduring friendship. However, his mother was the opposite: controlling and judgmental. She often ridiculed me for not attending college, questioning why Anthony was with someone like me, especially since education was highly valued in their family. Even Alice was pursuing a business degree.

Anthony’s mother would belittle me by saying: “I don’t understand why Anthony likes you so much”. “Everyone in your family has been to college. We prefer well-educated individuals in our family”.

It hurt when she called me unintelligent and dismissed my circumstances, claiming that not going to college was just an excuse and that I chose an easy path by working lower-level jobs instead of furthering my education. I tried to explain to her: “I didn’t ruin my life, Olivia. I worked a decent job and managed to stay afloat even after being orphaned at 19”.

“Besides, I am now helping Anthony pay off his student loans by contributing significantly to our household expenses”. About a year into our relationship, Anthony suggested moving in with me due to the burden of his student loans, which we are tackling together.

Anthony needed to reduce his expenses significantly. Although he had a decent job, the burden of his student loans was overwhelming. As our relationship was solid, I invited him to move into my home.

I took on the responsibility of paying for our groceries and even used my savings to repair his car. He, in turn, focused on paying down his debts and financially supporting his mother, Olivia. His mother often belittled me, portraying me as undeserving of Anthony.

She insinuated that I was a naive girl who didn’t deserve someone like her son. Ironically, she was right about one thing: I deserve better than Anthony, but I hadn’t realized it at the time. Despite the tensions, Anthony went ahead and married me. He adored his mother and never confronted her about her treatment of me.

I foolishly hoped that marriage would change him, that he would eventually stand up for me as his wife. Unfortunately, he never did. Olivia’s insults persisted, and she took money from her son while I managed all our household expenses.

She even brought her new boyfriend into the picture, increasing the financial strain on us as Anthony began covering his expenses too. It was a dreadful situation, but I remained in the marriage for 3 years, driven by a fear of being alone and a determination to make it work.

Our frequent arguments revolved around his mother, and it pained me that Anthony never defended me. He often dismissed my concerns and blamed me for any discord. Another point of contention was our future family plans.

Since Anthony was financially stretched thin with his debts and his support for his mother, starting our own family was put on indefinite hold. This was devastating for me, but I had come to terms with it until one day when Olivia summoned everyone to her house for a startling announcement.

“So you must be wondering why I called you all here today,” Olivia began, capturing our attention. “Well, I am pregnant! You’re going to have a new sibling soon, a baby boy”. “Wow, that’s great news, Mom! Congratulations!” Anthony reacted with genuine happiness.

“You have to be kidding me, Mom! What were you thinking? You don’t work, and your boyfriend doesn’t contribute financially. How will you support this child?” Alice expressed her concerns, clearly troubled by the news. Alice continued: “This is a miracle child, you know. I always wanted another child but never had the chance”.

Olivia’s declaration reflected a mix of defiance and joy, oblivious to the practical concerns her daughter raised. “Finally, my dream has come true. Don’t be so harsh”.

“You haven’t exactly been the best mother to us, Mom. Do you really think you’re an expert at raising children? This isn’t just some hobby! Who’s going to support you? I want no part in this, I’m telling you now”. “Don’t be so heartless, Alice. We will all help out. This child will be cherished and won’t lack anything. I’m sure Mom can handle it”.

I remained silent because I was at a loss for words honestly. It felt like a personal affront, and I found myself agreeing with Alice. Olivia had always relied on her children for everything, and now she was introducing another dependent into our lives. Oddly enough, the baby’s father wasn’t even present, which was troubling.
