The Ghost of a Mother

My mom left me at 16 for her new kids. 17 years later, she’s back wanting my money. Hello Reddit I plus here.

I was 16 when she left. Not in the tragic, heartbreaking way where a mother is ripped away from her child against her will.

No, she chose to leave. She held my face in her hands one evening, the scent of baby powder still clinging to her fingers.

She told me, “You’re old enough now; you don’t need me like they do.” And then she was gone.

She had new babies, twin boys, a new husband, and a new life. I wasn’t part of it.

I remember standing on the porch, watching the tail lights of her car disappear down our street. My father gripped my shoulder so tightly it bruised.

He never said a word, just turned and walked back inside. He was never much of a talker.

That was the first night I realized silence could feel like a coffin. But I survived.

I finished school, worked three jobs, and clawed my way into college. Now at 33, I was a successful financial consultant.

I was built from nothing but sheer spite. I had an unrelenting hunger to prove I was worth more than the woman who abandoned me had believed.

Then, 17 years later, she came back. I wasn’t expecting her when she showed up at my office.

The receptionist poked her head in, her expression hesitant. “Uh, there’s a woman out here who says she’s your mother.”

I laughed; I couldn’t help it. “I don’t have a mother.”

But curiosity, that damn weakness of mine, made me stand. And there she was.
