My neighbor dropped her towel on the floor and said, “Don’t tell anyone.”
Finding a Connection in the Silence
The days that followed I helped her fix the leak replace some tiles even painted the walls of her bathroom. Every evening she’d make coffee and we talk.
Not about the weather or small things but about life real life. She told me her husband had left two years ago after their son was diagnosed with autism said he couldn’t handle the pressure.
She worked two jobs to make ends meet. Every time she talked about her boy her eyes softened even when she was exhausted.
I told her about my wife about the nights I still reached for someone who wasn’t there. For the first time in a long while I wasn’t talking to Phil’s silence i was talking to be heard.
Point one evening her son Noah came over with her. He was shy barely spoke but when he saw my old guitar in the corner his eyes lit up.
I handed it to him and though his words were few his fingers told stories through sound. The notes were clumsy but pure.
I hadn’t touched that guitar since my wife died. That night when Emma smiled and said “You have no idea what this means to him.”
Something inside me shifted. It wasn’t love yet but it was something close a quiet recognition between two people who had both lost too much.
As weeks past emma’s laughter began filling the halls again. I’d hear her singing with Noah as I brewed my morning coffee.
I didn’t realize how much I’d come to depend on those sounds until one day everything changed again. She didn’t show up for coffee her door stayed closed all day.
When I finally knocked there was no answer. The next day still nothing.
On the third day I found a note slipped under my door. “thank you for everything please don’t come looking for us smy”
Heart dropped. I didn’t know what had happened only that the apartment felt heavier than ever before.
I asked the landlord but he said she’d left suddenly no forwarding address. For weeks I felt like I’d lost something precious all over again.
The quiet returned cruel and familiar. But deep down I knew there was more to her story.
