My Own Sister Used My 6-Year-Old Niece As Bait — She Never Expected My Trap

Part 1

The meeting room fell dead silent the moment she stepped inside.

A little girl, no older than six, stood there completely barefoot.

Her clothes were wrinkled and stained with dirt.

Her hair hung in tangled knots around her pale face.

She carried a smell so strong and sour that even the toughest men in my syndicate flinched.

She didn’t knock on my heavy office doors.

She just walked straight up to my massive desk.

Then she lifted her tiny arm as if showing me something.

I frowned deeply and asked her where her mother was.

I demanded to know what had happened to her.

But when I leaned closer, my face instantly drained of all color.

It wasn’t dirt covering her skin.

It was deep purple bruise marks.

They were finger-shaped and so incredibly fresh they were still swelling.

Beneath those horrible bruises sat a small folded piece of paper.

It was taped directly to her fragile skin.

The note contained only five words.

It read that I would protect her.

The entire room froze in place.

The girl stared up at me with eyes full of absolute terror.

It was as if she believed someone would drag her away the moment she stopped moving.

I kept my movements completely controlled and deliberately slow.

I called her sweetheart in the softest voice I could manage.

I asked her exactly who had put those marks on her.

The girl whispered just one single name.

I exploded with a rage I hadn’t felt in decades.

I roared orders at my men as they scrambled into action.

Because the name she whispered was the absolute last person I ever expected.

I had built my underground empire on three very simple rules.

Never hurt children.

Never betray family.

For over twenty years, those rules had kept me alive in a dangerous world.

But standing there looking down at this broken little girl, every single rule was about to be tested.

The child couldn’t have weighed more than forty pounds.

Her dress had once been a bright, cheerful pink.

Now it was stained with dirt and something much darker.

It looked as if she had walked miles on broken glass.

But her eyes hit me harder than a physical punch to the gut.

They held a kind of emptiness that no six-year-old should ever possess.

I asked her name, making my voice gentler than any of my men had ever heard it.

She whispered the name Megan.

There was only one Megan I knew.

She was my brother’s daughter.

My brother Tom had been dead for three years.

My voice cracked slightly as I said her full name.

The little girl nodded slowly.

This was my niece.

This was Tom’s child.

She was supposed to be safe in protective custody with social services after Tom’s murder.

I had been explicitly told she was being cared for by a loving foster family upstate.

My lieutenant Craig stepped forward cautiously and suggested making some calls.

My eyes never left Megan’s face.

I ordered them to close and lock the doors.

Nobody comes in.

Nobody goes out.

I knelt down to Megan’s eye level.

I told her I was her Uncle Dan.

I asked if she remembered me from before.

She whispered that I was Uncle Dan with the scary friends.

Despite everything, I almost managed to smile.

I confirmed that I was indeed Uncle Dan with the scary friends.

Her tiny hand reached deep into her pocket.

She pulled out a crumpled, faded photograph.

I recognized it immediately.

It was a picture of me, Tom, and our sister Brenda at a family barbecue five years ago.

Someone had drawn red crosses over Tom’s face and my own.

Megan whispered that she said we were bad men.

Megan said that she claimed we killed her daddy.

The photograph trembled in my rigid hands.

It was Brenda.

My own sister.

The woman who made me promise to always protect family.

I asked Megan where she had been living.

She told me she lived with Aunt Brenda.

Brenda had forbidden her from ever talking about me again.

My jaw clenched so hard my teeth ached.

This was the same sister who had been feeding information to my enemies for months.

But using a child was something else entirely.

Hurting Tom’s daughter crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

I gently asked when those specific bruises happened.

Tears immediately filled Megan’s eyes.

She had asked if she could call me.

Brenda got really mad and grabbed her arm with vicious force.

Brenda told her if she ever mentioned my name again, she would make sure she never talked to anybody ever again.

My men stood completely frozen in shock.

They watched me process information that was clearly destroying me from the inside out.

She said she waited until Brenda went to sleep.

Then she climbed out the window and walked all night.

She told me the man downstairs tried to stop her.

She had told him she was family.

The note taped to her arm made terrible sense now.

She knew Megan would find a way to reach me.

It wasn’t a cry for help.

It was a message.

It was a twisted, sick game.

Brenda was daring me to choose between my code of never hurting family and my promise to protect the innocent.

I realized there was absolutely no choice to make.

Brenda had stopped being family the very moment she laid her hands on this child.

What happened next would force me into the most impossible choice of my entire life.
