My Patient Escaped Through the Hospital Exit — Five Years Later, He Came Back to Find Me

Part 2

The words on the monitor seemed to pull all the air from the room.

Nobody spoke for several agonizing seconds while rain tapped softly against the windows.

The recovered message glowed on the screen in harsh white letters: He must never learn who gave the order.

I stared at the sentence, reading it again and again as if repetition might somehow reveal the missing pieces.

Instead, it only made the overwhelming mystery even larger.

Dan remained absolutely motionless beside the desk, the firelight from the library reflecting in his eyes, but his attention never left the monitor.

Five years of questions had finally produced something tangible, yet the final answer still sat just beyond our reach.

I asked if we could trace where it came from, and Greg nodded without looking away from the screen, his fingers moving rapidly across the keyboard.

Lines of data appeared, showing old server records and archived backups recovered from forgotten storage systems.

I understood almost none of the technical information, but I understood perfectly the intense tension filling the room.

Greg noted the message was deleted within hours, and whoever removed it knew exactly what they were doing to cover their tracks.

Dan folded his arms and pointed out they missed one copy, apparently.

Greg enlarged another file showing a timestamp beneath the recovered message that matched the hospital night perfectly.

More importantly, the message had been sent less than thirty minutes before Dan arrived at the emergency department.

I asked who received it, and Greg hesitated before saying that information was currently missing from the file.

Dan’s expression hardened into pure stone as he ordered him to recover it.

I stepped away from the desk and moved toward the window, watching the river beyond the property vanish into the darkness.

Everything felt entirely unreal because forty-eight hours earlier I had been worried about scheduling conflicts at the hospital.

Now I was watching evidence emerge from a five-year-old conspiracy I never knew existed.

Greg sat upright in his chair and announced he found something else—an audio file from the exact same archive.

He clicked the file, and static crackled loudly through the speakers along with heavily distorted male voices.

Most of the conversation remained impossible to understand until a clear sentence finally broke through the noise.

The hospital changes everything, one voice said before static swallowed the next section.

Another voice answered, sounding perfectly calm and controlled, and I felt a strange chill run down my spine because the tone felt familiar.

The recording crackled one last time before vanishing beneath digital noise, but it was clear someone had been discussing Dan before he arrived at the hospital.

I looked toward Dan, who was staring at the speakers as though they had become a doorway straight into his past.

I asked who it was, and the hesitation in his answer revealed the truth: he recognized the voice.

For the first time since discovering the archive, uncertainty crossed his face, a heavy expression of someone desperately hoping they were wrong.

Greg stopped the recording and opened another data screen showing metadata attached to the file, specifically the original storage location.

It was a private server belonging to a family-owned company connected directly to the Moretti organization.

I watched Dan’s expression change the very moment he recognized it, the shift immediate and undeniable.

His voice remained incredibly calm as he revealed the server belonged to his uncle.

The room went silent again as the first real threat connecting Richard Moretti to the events of that night finally emerged.

With his family gathering less than twenty-four hours away, how were we supposed to expose a man who had already spent five years erasing every trace of his guilt?
