My Sister Cut Me From Her Wedding Guest List — Then Begged Me To Return When The Groom Walked Out
Part 2
I stared at my screen for a long moment.
The words ‘The groom left’ felt completely surreal.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I took a long breath, letting the cool ocean breeze calm my racing heart.
The sheer panic in Kelly’s voice was something I hadn’t heard before.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK She usually loved watching family drama unfold from the sidelines.
But this time, it sounded like a genuine catastrophe.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “What exactly started the fight?”
I asked, leaning closer to the phone.
Kelly sighed heavily.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “No one knows for sure, but they were arguing by the bar.”
“Megan started screaming that he was ruining her perfect day.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “He just dropped his drink, turned around, and walked right out the front doors.”
“He didn’t even take his jacket or say goodbye to his parents.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I imagined Megan standing there in her expensive gown.
The gown I had helped her pick out months ago.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I had spent hours pinning dresses and holding her purse while she complained.
Now she was standing alone at her own reception.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I should have felt bad for her.
I should have felt the familiar urge to jump on a plane and fix it.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK But all I felt was a strange, peaceful detachment.
They had created this mess all on their own.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “Are they still fighting?”
I asked softly.
“Yes,” Kelly replied, her voice dropping to a whisper.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “an uncle is threatening to call the police because someone broke a centerpiece.”
“It’s a complete nightmare.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “And Mom keeps saying that if you were here, you would know what to do.”
I smiled into the darkness, taking another sip of wine.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I had spent my entire life knowing what to do for them.
Tonight, I finally knew what to do for myself.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK My thumb hovered over the keyboard.
Before I could type a response, my phone began to vibrate.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK It was my cousin Kelly calling.
She was the only person in the family who never sugarcoated the drama.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I answered on the first ring.
“Are you sitting down?” she asked breathlessly.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I leaned back against the balcony railing.
“I’m overlooking the ocean with a glass of wine, so I’m ready.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK Kelly let out a sharp laugh.
“Megan and the groom got into a massive screaming match during the reception.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “He just walked out the front door and never came back.”
I blinked at the sheer absurdity of it.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “You’re kidding,” I breathed.
“It gets better,” she continued, her voice fizzing with glee.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “Your dad and an uncle got into a shouting match right on the dance floor.”
“Guests were actually recording it.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I took a slow sip of my wine.
“And what about Mom?”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “She tried to call his mother, who just told her it was our problem now.”
“But here is the absolute best part.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK Kelly paused for dramatic effect.
“Grandma stood up and blamed the entire disaster on Megan for not inviting you.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK I almost dropped my glass.
“She actually said that?”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “Right in front of everyone,” Kelly confirmed.
“They’re saying if you had been there, you would have fixed everything like you always do.”
PARAGRAPH_BREAK A cold, hard realization settled in my chest.
They wanted a wedding without me, and now they had a disaster without me.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “Now Mom is demanding you come back immediately to manage the fallout,” Kelly warned.
I looked out at the dark ocean, feeling completely at peace.
PARAGRAPH_BREAK “Tell them I’m extending my trip,” I said firmly.
Now they’re threatening to fly out here if I don’t answer my phone, but how far will they actually go to drag me back into their mess?
