My Sunday Stroll Was Interrupted By A Six-Year-Old — And Her Single Question Changed My Life

Part 2

I blinked several times in rapid succession to desperately process the completely unexpected words I had just heard.

I genuinely wondered if my own ears were playing a very cruel trick on me.

An involuntary, genuine smile quickly appeared across my face.

It was a complicated mixture of profound surprise and gentle amusement at the sheer audacity of this tiny, unknown child.

Never in my entire strictly regimented life had I experienced a moment so wonderfully direct and breathtakingly genuine.

I looked deeply into her large eyes that were overflowing with pure, unadulterated hope.

“No, little one.”

My deep voice came out much softer and far more tender than my usual commanding boardroom tone.

“No, I am not married.”

The little girl let out a breath so incredibly deep and profoundly relieved that I simply could not help but laugh softly under my breath.

She tightly closed her eyes for a brief second as if she had just received the absolute best news of her entire life.

When she opened her eyes once again, they shined brightly with a pure, unfiltered joy.

A very strange, warm sensation bloomed rapidly right in the middle of my usually cold chest.

The girl gave a tiny, spontaneous jump of pure happiness.

I felt as though a bright beam of sunlight had violently pierced into the darkest, most hidden corner of my soul.

“May I politely ask why that is so very important to you?”

I leaned even closer in her direction to gently uncover the intricate reasoning hiding behind such a peculiar question.

The little girl nodded her head enthusiastically.

She was clearly relieved to finally be able to openly share the heavy burden she had been guarding inside her small heart.

“It is just that at my school, mister, absolutely all the other girls and boys have a daddy.”

Her heavy words fell upon me like freezing drops of sudden winter rain.

“When there are fun festivals at school, absolutely all the daddies arrive to help set up.”

Her tiny hands wildly gesticulated to emphasize her important points.

“My mom always comes to every event, and she truly makes double the effort of anyone else.”

She lowered her small voice conspiratorially as if she were sharing a critical state secret.

“But late last night, my mom was talking to my Aunt Brenda on the telephone.”

I nodded very slowly while beginning to fully comprehend the surprising direction this deeply personal confession was inevitably heading toward.

“I quietly listened from the hallway when she firmly said that she would never ever get involved with a married man.”

The little girl bravely continued speaking with much more confidence now.

“She always says that marriage is incredibly sacred and she would never be the reason why innocent children lose their loving father.”

I immediately felt a profound, surging respect for this unknown mother.

“So when I saw you sitting right here looking so peaceful on the bench, I thought that maybe…”

She paused for a brief moment to nervously bite her lower lip.

“I thought that if you were not married, maybe you could…”

Her small voice slowly trailed off into silence as if she abruptly realized the massive weight of what she was daring to say.

I vividly felt my own heart tightly compressing inside my chest.

This extraordinary little girl was actively searching for a father, and for some inexplicable magical reason, she had chosen me.

“What is your wonderful name, little one?”

The rising tide of powerful emotions dangerously threatened to completely break my long-maintained corporate composure.

“My name is Megan.”

She offered a beautifully timid smile that instantly illuminated her entire face like a burst of pure sunshine.

“And exactly where is your mother right now, Megan?”

She vaguely pointed her small finger toward a shaded area further down the concrete path.

“She is over there resting, because Sundays are her absolute only free day of the week since she works exceptionally hard sewing clothes in Brooklyn.”

“Megan, does your mother actually know that you are standing all the way over here actively talking to me?”

She quickly shook her head side to side.

“No, mister, she does not know, but when I saw you I felt exactly like when my mom says that God purposely places important signs directly in our path.”

Our intensely private moment was suddenly violently shattered by the loud sound of frantic footsteps pounding heavily against the grass.

“Megan, where exactly are you?!”

A remarkably beautiful but entirely terrified woman was sprinting directly toward us with an expression of paralyzing terror across her pale face.

She wore a plain cotton blouse and deeply faded blue jeans.

The frantic woman arrived running at full speed and practically ripped Megan away from my side.

She yanked the small girl tightly against her protective body in a fierce embrace.

She glared at me with a fiery mixture of absolute fear and deep mistrust.

“What exactly is going on here?”

Her trembling voice remained fiercely protective as she deliberately positioned her body like a shield.

I looked at the terrified, beautiful mother standing before me and realized I had a choice to make, but would she even give a stranger like me a chance?
