My wife blew $700,000 of my inheritance on her parents’ house without asking me
A Betrayal of Partnership
The room went silent for a moment. I thought I’d misheard her.
“Wait, you did what?”
“Paid off their house,” she said casually, flipping through the folder. “They don’t have to worry about money anymore.”
“It’s a win-win; they keep the house and it’s in our name now.”
The word “our” felt like a punch to the gut. My mouth went dry as I realized what she meant.
“How much did you spend?”
“$700,000,” she said like it was nothing. “From the inheritance; don’t worry, there’s still some left.”
My vision blurred. “You didn’t think to ask me first?”
Lisa tilted her head as if I’d asked her why the sky was blue. “It’s our money, Josh; why would I need to ask?”
The nonchalance of her response floored me. My uncle’s hard-earned money—money I planned to use to secure our future—was gone.
Worse, it wasn’t spent on us or our family, but on her parents’ house without so much as a conversation.
I was furious but tried to stay calm. “Lisa,” I said slowly, “that money wasn’t just a pile of cash to blow.”
“It was for us, for our life together; you had no right.”
“I had every right,” she interrupted. “We’re married, Josh; what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is yours.”
“Or just whatever you decide to spend without asking?” My voice was rising despite my efforts.
Lisa shrugged again, completely unfazed. “Look, it’s done; there’s no point arguing about it.”
“It’s our house now; you should be happy we’re helping my parents.”
I stared at her, my chest tight. “It’s their house; you didn’t buy it for us.”
“You gave them a gift I didn’t agree to.”
Her tone shifted, defensive now. “Why are you being so selfish? They’re family.”
“No,” I said firmly. “What’s selfish is spending nearly 3/4 of a million dollars without consulting me.”
“This isn’t a minor oversight, Lisa; it’s betrayal.”
Lisa rolled her eyes, dismissing me like I was overreacting.
