My Wife Kept A Terrifying Secret — Then It Climbed Through Our Baby's Window

Part 1

The Cabernet washed across our dining room table as a stranger’s gruff voice echoed from the baby monitor.

“Hurry up, they’re downstairs,” the voice crackled through the cheap plastic speaker.

Megan froze with her silver dinner fork suspended halfway to her mouth.

I spat my sip of wine back into my glass and scrambled backward, knocking my wooden chair onto the rug.

We didn’t exchange a single word as we both bolted toward the staircase.

The polished wood of the banister bit into my palms as I vaulted up the first flight of stairs.

Our three-month-old’s nursery sat at the very end of the long second-floor hallway.

I reached the heavy oak door first and wrenched the brass handle.

It didn’t budge even a fraction of an inch.

Someone had locked the nursery door from the inside.

Panic flared in my chest like a struck match hitting dry kindling.

A harsh scraping sound echoed from within the dark room, followed immediately by the distinctive thud of a window sliding open.

I threw my entire shoulder into the solid wood paneling without a second thought.

The doorframe splintered under my heavy weight, sending jagged shards of wood flying across the carpet.

I stumbled clumsily into the nursery and caught my balance heavily against the wooden changing table.

Two strange men were occupying my infant son’s bedroom.

One intruder was already halfway out the open window, clutching my baby tightly against his dark jacket.

The second man sat casually in the corner rocking chair, aiming a heavy black pistol directly at my face.

A faded line of teardrop tattoos tracked down the gunman’s left cheek like permanent ink tears.

He possessed a sickeningly relaxed posture, resting his elbows on his knees as if we were gathering for a friendly chat.

“Sit down,” he murmured in a voice that was barely more than a raspy whisper.

“Let’s have a little conversation before things get out of hand.”

My leg muscles tightened involuntarily as I watched his accomplice disappear completely onto the roof with my child.

I lunged forward desperately to grab the escaping man by his collar before he could vanish into the night.

The seated intruder squeezed his trigger without a single flinch or warning.

Two deafening cracks shattered the fragile silence of our suburban home.

White plaster rained down heavily on my shoulders as the bullets buried themselves into the wall mere inches from my ear.

“The next one goes right between your eyes if you keep that up,” the tattooed man warned evenly.

I froze dead in my tracks, my ears ringing violently from the concussive force of the gunshots.

“Your kid is perfectly safe for the moment,” he added while gesturing with the smoking barrel toward the floor.

“Think of this arrangement as more of a collateral situation.”

“I’ll hold onto the boy until I get exactly what I came here for.”

My breathing came in ragged, jagged gasps as I tried to process the nightmare unfolding in front of me.

“Is this some kind of sick neighborhood ransom racket?”

I demanded hotly.

“You break into houses and hold babies hostage for a quick cash payout?”

The man tilted his shaved head and let out a dry, utterly humorless chuckle.

“No, this is a much more delicate and personal situation,” he said softly.

He shifted his dark, unblinking gaze away from me and locked eyes directly with my wife.

“Do you want to tell him, or should I do the honors?” he asked her.

My blood ran entirely cold in my veins.

I slowly turned my head to look at Megan, hoping for some look of complete confusion.

Her face had drained of all color, matching the stark white paint of the nursery walls perfectly.

“This is Craig,” she whispered, her voice trembling so violently I could barely hear her.

“We went to grade school together.”

She swallowed hard, deliberately refusing to meet my frantic gaze.

“I haven’t seen him in about twelve years, actually.”

Craig rolled his dark eyes dramatically and adjusted his tight grip on the weapon.

“Cut the nostalgic grade school crap and tell him the real truth.”

He leaned forward slightly, the metallic barrel catching the soft, warm glow of the corner nightlight.

“I really look forward to hearing your highly sanitized version of our shared history.”

Megan wrapped both of her slender arms around her stomach as if trying desperately to hold her body together.

“We dated in college for a couple of months,” she admitted quietly into the tense air.

Craig stared at her with a chilling, dead-eyed intensity that made my stomach churn.

“Is that it?” he mocked openly.

“Is that really all you want to tell your loving husband?”

Megan lifted her chin slightly and met his intimidating stare with surprising defiance.

“Yes, that is absolutely all that happened between us.”

Craig slowly shook his head in a display of mock disappointment.

“That hurts, man,” he sneered directly at me.

“We shared so much more than that, but she just doesn’t want to admit it in front of the weak husband.”

Hot anger finally pierced through my paralyzing blanket of fear.

“Why don’t you put the gun down and let’s see exactly how weak I am?”

I challenged him loudly.

Craig simply smiled, appearing entirely unbothered by my sudden physical threat.

“Are you seriously not going to tell him our little secret?” he asked Megan again.

She pressed her pale lips into a thin, bloodless line and remained entirely silent.

“Just tell us what the hell you want so we can get our son back!”

I shouted desperately.

“I can’t do that before the dirty truth is properly revealed,” Craig barked back at me.

“And the only person who can do that is your pretty, highly deceptive little wife.”

Megan bolted toward the shattered wooden doorway.

Craig moved with terrifying, unnatural speed, stepping into her path and blocking the only exit.

He invaded her personal space, pressing the cold steel of the heavy gun against her thigh.

“I’m having some really sweet flashbacks being this close to you again,” he taunted her.

I surged to my feet, driven by pure instinct to protect her from this monster.

Craig snapped his heavily tattooed arm up and leveled the gun straight at my nose.

I swiped at the weapon in a desperate, uncoordinated bid to disarm him.

He sidestepped my clumsy grab and slammed the heavy metal butt of the pistol into my cheekbone.

White-hot pain exploded across my face as my knees buckled hard against the hardwood floor.

Through my blurring vision, I watched him grab Megan by her slender throat.

He slammed her against the solid drywall, knocking the breath out of her lungs.

“Tell your hubby the truth right now, or I swear to God you’ll never see that kid again.”
