Poor Dad Checked On A Lonely Neighbor, Never Guessing She Was A CEO Who Fell For His Gentle Care

The Quiet Neighbor and the Simple Meal

It was just past 7 when Andrew Rener knocked on the door next to his holding a plastic container of lukewarm mac and cheese and a paper towel he’d folded like a napkin. “Hello miss,” he called shifting his toddler Ava on his hip “you okay in there?”

For 3 days the new neighbor hadn’t made a sound. No lights at night, mail piling up.

And while most people would mind their business Andrew wasn’t most people. He was a single dad working two jobs barely making rent in the aging apartment complex on West Maple.

But he still believed in checking on people especially someone who looked that heartbroken.

The one time he’d seen her standing in the hallway barefoot in a silk robe staring like she didn’t know where she was.

The door cracked open. A woman with tired eyes and perfect posture blinked at him.

She was stunning even without makeup her dark hair pulled into an effortless bun her cheekbones sharp her expression unreadable.

“I my kid and I made dinner” Andrew said lifting the container “figured maybe you hadn’t eaten.”

She stared at the food like it was foreign her eyes flicking to Ava who gave a shy wave. “I wasn’t expecting anyone” the woman said softly.

“I know sorry i just We live next door and I noticed you hadn’t been around thought I’d check” he offered a sheepish smile. “I’m Andrew and this is Ava.”

The woman hesitated then opened the door a little wider. “I’m Juliet come in.”

He didn’t expect the inside to look like that. The apartment had barely anything in it a few unopened boxes a sleek couch and a glass coffee table.

No photos, no plants, no warmth. “I just moved in” Juliet said catching his glance “still unpacking.”

Andrew set the container down on the counter. “Well if you need anything tools help with furniture or just decent food my door is always open.”

Juliet looked down at Ava who was now chewing on her stuffed bunny’s ear. “She’s beautiful.”

“She’s a menace” Andrew laughed “but she keeps me grounded.” Juliet’s smile was faint but real.

“Thank you for checking.” He nodded and gently backed toward the door.

“All right we’ll let you get back to whatever you weren’t doing Andrew” he paused.

She looked at the mac and cheese like it was the first real thing she’d seen in days. “Would you mind staying just for a bit?”

That’s how it started. One dinner turned into two then into him helping her fix a dripping faucet.

Then into Ava knocking on her door with a crayon drawing and asking to play with Miss. Andrew didn’t ask questions.

He figured she was going through something and she clearly didn’t want to talk about it.

But he noticed the way she flinched at loud sounds. The way her eyes scanned the hallway like she expected someone to follow her.

She had money he could tell by the way she dressed even in her quiet moments. Silk tops designer flats a watch that probably cost more than his car.

But she never acted like it. She sat on the floor with Ava ate grilled cheese like it was gourmet and once helped him fold laundry while explaining how to get gum out of a hoodie.

One night as he walked her back to her door she stopped him. “Why are you kind to me?”

He frowned. “Because you needed someone to be.”

She stared at him for a long time something unreadable flashing across her face. “No one ever is without wanting something.”

“I don’t want anything Juliet” he said gently “except maybe to see you smile more.”

She didn’t say anything but her eyes shimmerred. And when she closed the door she leaned against it like her legs wouldn’t hold.
