Poor Dad Found A Crying Woman By A Grave, Never Suspecting She Was A CEO Who’d Soon Love Him Deeply
A Chance Meeting Amidst Grief
Xander Owens wasn’t supposed to be at the cemetery that morning but when your six-year-old son asks if you can bring flowers to visit mommy you don’t say no.
“Daddy can I carry them” Liam asked gripping the cheap bouquet they’d picked up from the gas station on the way.
“Careful with the stems Bud they poke” Xander ruffled his son’s hair. His coat collar turned up against the cold as they walked past rows of gravestones.
It had been 3 years but grief didn’t come with an expiration date not for him not for Liam.
He was just lifting his son to place the flowers on the grave when he heard it the sound of soft crying.
He turned. A woman sat on a stone bench near the far end of the plot her arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to hold something inside from falling apart.
Her heels sank into the Earth her hair falling in dark waves that hid most of her face. But the sound of her crying it hit him straight in the chest.
“Dad” Liam whispered tugging his sleeve “she’s sad too.”
Xander hesitated he never got involved in strangers grief not anymore.
But something about the way she sat there like she’d forgotten the world existed made it impossible to look away.
“I’ll be right back” he told Liam. “Sit here don’t wander.”
He approached slowly. “Ah hey sorry to bother you you okay?”
The woman looked up startled her eyes red and rimmed with mascara smudges.
But even with tear streak cheeks she was beautiful not in the polished Hollywood scents more like the kind of woman who didn’t need to try but still somehow made everything around her fade.
“I’m fine” she said quickly brushing at her face. “I just needed a minute.”
“Didn’t mean to intrude” he said backing off. “I know this isn’t exactly the place for small talk.”
“No wait” she said her voice a little hoarse. “I just wasn’t expecting anyone.”
Her eyes flicked to Liam who was now humming to himself beside his mother’s grave. “Your son?”
Xander nodded. “Yeah Liam.”
She looked back at The Headstone in front of her. “Was he close with her?”
He hesitated. “It’s his mom.”
Her face softened instantly. “I’m sorry that’s I’m sorry.”
Xander gave a small nod. “You hear for someone?”
“My brother” she said quietly. “He passed away last year.”
“I come here when I need to feel like he’s still around.”
Xander glanced at the name on The Headstone. “Daniel Ashford.”
“He must have meant a lot to you.” Her lips trembled.
“He was all I had for a long time.” There was a silence between them not awkward just full.
“I’m Xander” he said finally. “Zarah” she replied wiping under her eyes.
“Zarah Ashford.” He didn’t recognize the name not that he would.
His world had shrunk to the size of his son and whatever job he could get that month.
“You hungry” he asked suddenly? “There’s a diner nearby makes a mean grilled cheese.”
Her brows lifted. “You’re asking a crying stranger at a graveyard to lunch?”
He Shrugged. “You look like you could use someone to talk to and I’m already here.”
Zara laughed just a little. “You’re not wrong.”
She looked down at her brother’s grave then back up at him. “Okay but only if your son approves.”
Xander turned. “Liam you want grilled cheese?”
Liam popped up. “Yes with fries.”
Zara smiled. “Guess that’s a yes.”
The diner was old but cozy with red vinyl booths and a waitress who knew Xander by name.
They slid into a booth Liam between them already coloring on the kids menu.
Zara looked slightly out of place like she didn’t do diners often.
“I’m guessing this isn’t your usual Lunch Spot” Xander said handing her a menu.
She looked amused. “Not exactly.”
“What do you do” Zara hesitated? “I run a company like a startup.”
“Not exactly” she didn’t elaborate and he didn’t push. Everyone had things they weren’t ready to share.
“What about you” she asked? “I fix things” he said.
“Sometimes cars sometimes houses whatever pays.”
Zara looked at him for a long moment. “That must be hard with a kid.”
“Yeah” he said simply “but he’s worth it.”
Liam interrupted holding up his drawing. “This is Mommy” he said proudly “and this is me and Daddy.”
Zara leaned in smiling. “That’s beautiful.”
“Daddy says she lives in the stars now” Liam added “but she still watches me.”
Zara’s eyes filled again and she reached across the table to squeeze Xander’s hand.
“You’re doing a good job” she said softly.
He didn’t know why that hit him so hard. Maybe because no one had said it in years maybe because it came from her.
They spent 2 hours in that Booth after the food was gone and Liam was dozing against Xander’s side.
Zara finally said “I should go.” “Can I walk you to your car?”
She nodded. Outside the sky had turned gold with sunset.
Her car was a sleek black luxury model that didn’t belong in that parking lot. Xander raised an eyebrow.
“Nice ride.” She smiled. “Perks of the job.”
He opened her door. “You sure you’re okay?”
“I will be” she said then paused. “Would it be crazy if I asked to see you again?”
He blinked. “Uh no not crazy.”
“I’m not great at this” she added “but today helped more than I expected.”
He gave a small smile. “Anytime.”
She leaned forward and kissed his cheek. “Bye Xander.”
She drove off tires Whispering against the pavement.
And he stood there watching her go heart pounding like he just stepped off a cliff.
He didn’t know who Zara Ashford really was or that she was a CEO worth millions.
He only knew one thing he wanted to see her again.
Xander hadn’t expected to hear from her again a woman like Zara didn’t belong in his world.
She was polished poised and carried herself with an ease he’d only ever seen from people who never had to count the exact change in their wallets.
But 3 days after their unlikely lunch she showed up outside the auto shop where he was patching up a busted transmission on an old pickup.
He only noticed her because all the guys suddenly stopped pretending to work.
She stepped out of a dark gray sedan that looked like it had been carved from Stone.
She was wearing a caramel coat belted at the waist and boots that probably cost more than the entire truck he was fixing.
Her hair was pulled back clean and simple and her gaze zeroed in on him like he was the only person in the lot.
“You forgot to give me your number” she said stopping a few feet from him.
Xander blinked a wrench still in his hand. He wasn’t sure she wanted it.
“I asked to see you again didn’t I?”
He straightened up wiping his hands on a rag. “Didn’t think you meant it.”
She looked around the garage then back at him. “Can I steal you for an hour?”
He gestured toward the truck. “Kind of mid-surgery.”
“I’ll pay for the owner’s rental while it’s stuck here” she said “and cover your time.”
The guys behind him exchanged wide-eyed glances but Xander didn’t look away from her.
“You don’t need to do that” he said. “I want to.”
He stared at her for a second longer before tossing the rag onto the workbench. “Let me change.”
He came back a few minutes later still smelling faintly of oil.
He was in a clean black hoodie and jeans without a single tear.
Zara waited Patiently by her car arms crossed the Winter Wind tugging strands of hair across her face.
“Where are we going” he asked? “Somewhere I go when I need to think” she said unlocking the passenger door.
He considered arguing but curiosity won. He climbed in.
