Poor Dad Let A Woman Use His Phone When Hers Died, Not Knowing She Was A Billionaire Falling For Him
From Concrete Plans to Butterfly Gardens
Two days later, Yansy was carefully reviewing blueprints when his phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.
“Hello, Mr. O’Connor, this is Khloe Addington; I hope you don’t mind that I kept your number from when I called my driver”. “The zoo is having a special preview of their new conservation center this Saturday; would Lily be interested? You’re both welcome as my guests”.
Yansy stared at the message, uncertain how to respond. Part of him, the proud part, wanted to politely decline. Another part recognized the genuine excitement Lily would feel at such an opportunity.
After some consideration, he typed: “That’s very kind of you; Lily would be thrilled. Are you sure it’s not an imposition?”.
The response came quickly: “Not at all; I’ll be there anyway for the funding announcement”. “It would be nice to have company who’s actually interested in the animals rather than the photo opportunities”. “10:00 a.m. at the main entrance”.
“We’ll be there, thank you”.
Saturday morning found Yansy and Lily waiting outside the zoo’s main gates. He dressed in his best casual clothes: clean jeans without any wear marks and a button-down shirt he usually reserved for parent-teacher conferences.
Lily wore her favorite dress, her hair neatly braided as she bounced on her toes with excitement.
“Do you think we’ll see tigers, Dad?” she asked for perhaps the 10th time that morning.
“I’m sure we will, Lil,” he answered patiently, checking his watch.
It was five minutes to ten. At precisely 10:00, Khloe arrived, looking completely different from their first meeting yet somehow equally elegant in simple jeans, a white t-shirt, and a light cardigan. Her hair was pulled back in a casual ponytail, and she wore minimal makeup that highlighted her natural beauty.
“You came,” she said, her smile genuine as she approached them. “I’m so glad. Are you ready for an adventure, Lily?”.
Lily nodded enthusiastically, already reaching for Khloe’s hand with the easy trust of childhood. Yansy watched, a complex emotion rising in his chest as this woman he barely knew connected so effortlessly with his daughter.
The zoo tour was more spectacular than Yansy could have imagined. Rather than the standard visitor experience, they were guided through back areas where veterinarians and zoologists worked.
Lily was allowed to help prepare food for the otter, watch a health check for a small monkey, and even gently touch a baby tortoise under the watchful eye of its caretaker.
Throughout it all, Khloe stayed with them, her knowledge about the conservation programs impressive and her attention to Lily’s questions unfailingly patient. Occasionally, staff members would approach with clipboards or questions, addressing her with clear deference before she directed them elsewhere.
“You seem very involved with the zoo,” Yansy commented during a brief moment when Lily was engrossed in watching the zookeeper feed the meerkats.
Kloe nodded. “Addington Development has been the primary funding partner for the conservation center; it’s been a passion project of mine for years”.
“Why conservation? It seems a bit different from real estate development”.
She considered the question thoughtfully.
“I believe responsible development means balancing growth with preservation, whether that’s historical buildings or natural habitats”. She paused, watching Lily. “Your daughter has an impressive mind; the questions she’s asking are remarkably insightful for her age”.
Pride warmed Yansy’s chest.
“She gets that from her mother; Emily was a science teacher before…”. He trailed off, the familiar pang of loss momentarily catching him off guard.
Khloe’s expression softened with understanding.
“Lily mentioned her mother was in heaven; I’m sorry for your loss”.
“Thank you; it’s been three years now”. Yansy watched his daughter, who was now carefully sketching a meerkat in the small notebook Khloe had given her. “She’s resilient, but it hasn’t been easy”.
“You’ve done an amazing job with her,” Khloe said, her voice carrying a genuine admiration that made Yansy feel momentarily self-conscious.
The day concluded with a private lunch in the zoo’s restaurant, where Kloe was clearly treated as an honored guest. Throughout the meal, Yansy couldn’t help noticing how different their worlds were, yet how comfortable the conversation remained.
Kloe asked questions about his work with genuine interest, and he found himself discussing construction challenges and design modifications with an enthusiasm he rarely got to express. As they prepared to leave, Lily wrapped her arms around Khloe’s waist in an impulsive hug.
“Thank you for the best day ever,” she said, her voice muffled against Khloe’s cardigan.
Khloe’s expression softened as she returned the hug, meeting Yansy’s eyes over Lily’s head with a smile that stirred something unexpected in his chest.
“It was my pleasure, truly,” she said, then with a hint of hesitation: “Actually, I have tickets for the Children’s Science Museum exhibit on flight next weekend”.
“They have an interactive area where kids can design and test their own paper airplane models; would you both like to join me?”.
Yansy saw the hope in Lily’s eyes and found himself nodding before he could overthink it.
“We’d like that very much”.
What began as a single museum visit soon evolved into a pattern of weekend outings. The science museum was followed by a botanical garden tour, then a community theater production of The Little Mermaid that left Lily spellbound.
Each time, Khloe arranged everything with thoughtful attention to Lily’s interests, always including Yansy in ways that made it clear his company was equally desired.
Three weeks after their first zoo visit, Yansy received a call from his construction site supervisor while he was picking up Lily from school.
“O’Connor, we’ve got a situation at Parkside”. “The project manager wants to scrap the original facade preservation plan because of costs”. “There’s an emergency meeting with the developers tomorrow morning; I need you there; you know those buildings better than anyone”.
Yansy immediately thought of Lily.
“Pete, I don’t have child care on Saturdays; my regular sitter works weekends at the mall now”.
“It’s critical, Yansy; the whole historical preservation aspect could be gutted if we don’t make our case”.
After hanging up, Yansy stood in the school parking lot mentally running through his limited options. Before he could stop himself, he was dialing Khloe’s number. She answered on the second ring.
“Yansancy, hello! I was just thinking about you both”. “There’s a kite festival at Riverside Park next weekend that Lily might enjoy”.
“That sounds great,” he said automatically, then hesitated. “Listen, I hate to ask this, but I have an emergency meeting tomorrow morning about the Parkside project”. “Would you happen to know any reliable babysitters who might be available on short notice?”.
“I wouldn’t normally ask, but…”.
“I could watch Lily,” Khloe offered immediately.
Yansy blinked, surprised.
“You? But you’re…”. He trailed off, not wanting to say a billionaire CEO who probably has better things to do.
Kloe laughed softly, seeming to understand his unspoken thought.
“I’m free tomorrow morning, and Lily and I get along wonderfully; if you’re comfortable with it, I’d be happy to spend time with her while you’re at your meeting”.
The following morning, Yansy opened his door to find Chloe standing there in jeans and a casual sweater, holding a canvas bag.
“I brought some butterfly identification books and craft supplies,” she explained, as Lily rushed to greet her with characteristic enthusiasm. “I thought we might make our own butterfly garden plans, if that’s okay with you”.
Yansy nodded, momentarily speechless at the thoughtfulness of her preparation.
“That’s perfect; thank you again for doing this”.
“It’s my pleasure,” Khloe said, her eyes meeting his with a warmth that had become increasingly familiar over the past weeks.
Throughout his meeting, Yansy found his thoughts drifting periodically to his apartment where the CEO of Addington Development was crafting butterfly gardens with his daughter. The contradiction was so striking it almost made him laugh during a particularly tense negotiation about preservation costs.
When he returned home three hours later, he found his usually tidy living room transformed into a colorful workspace. Papers with butterfly drawings were spread across the coffee table while Lily and Khloe sat cross-legged on the floor, carefully painting small clay pots.
“Dad!” Lily exclaimed when she noticed him. “Chloe says we can plant real flowers that will attract real butterflies to our balcony! We’re making special pots for them!”.
“I hope you don’t mind,” Khloe said, rising to her feet with a slight smudge of blue paint on her cheek that made her look endearingly human. “The garden center delivers, so we ordered some butterfly-friendly plants that should arrive next week”.
“Mind? This is amazing,” Yansy said honestly. “How did the clay pots come into the picture?”.
“I may have stopped at the craft store on the way over,” Kloe admitted with a small smile. “Lily mentioned wanting to make her own garden containers when we were at the botanical gardens, remember?”.
The fact that she had remembered such a small detail from weeks ago struck Yansy deeply. He studied her face, the genuine happiness in her expression as she looked at Lily’s work, the casual comfort she seemed to feel in his modest apartment, and the paint smudge she hadn’t even noticed.
“Would you like to stay for lunch?” he heard himself asking. “Nothing fancy, just sandwiches, but we’d love to have you”.
“I’d like that very much,” Chloe replied.
Sandwiches turned into an afternoon of completing their butterfly garden plans, which evolved into ordering pizza for dinner and watching a nature documentary about monarch migration.
By the time Khloe finally prepared to leave, the sky outside had grown dark, and Lily had fallen asleep on the couch, her head resting against Khloe’s arm. Gently extracting herself, Kloe helped Yansy carry the sleeping child to her bedroom.
As they stood in the hallway afterward, a new charged awareness seemed to hum between them.
“Thank you for today,” Yansie said softly. “Lily had an amazing time”.
“So did I,” Khloe replied, her voice equally quiet. “More than I can express”.
There was a moment, brief but electric, when Yansancy thought about closing the distance between them. Instead, he walked her to the door, where she turned to face him one last time.
“Yansancy,” she said, her usual confidence momentarily wavering, “I want you to know that these past few weeks have meant a great deal to me: being with you and Lily”. She paused, seeming to search for the right words. “It’s been the most real thing in my life for a very long time”.
Before he could respond, she leaned forward and pressed a soft, quick kiss to his cheek, then stepped into the hallway with a whispered goodnight.
