Poor Dad Stepped In When A Woman Was Cornered By Strangers, Not Knowing She Was A CEO In Love

A Chance Encounter in the City

Xavier Wells didn’t have a lot, just his son, a rusty pickup, and a heart that refused to quit even after life had done everything to break it. “Riley, stay close to me,” he said.

“All right,” Xavier said as he locked the old truck and took the toddler’s hand. They were walking through the city plaza on the way to the public library.

Books were free and that made for good Saturday adventures. Riley was humming to himself, holding his stuffed dinosaur, completely unaware of the chaos about to unfold.

Xavier had just rounded the corner when he heard the sharp voice of a man. “Come on, sweetheart, don’t act like you’re too good for us”.

His eyes snapped to a narrow alley between two buildings. Three men stood there surrounding a woman in a sharp navy blazer and heels too expensive for this part of town.

Her face was calm but her body was tense, like she was trying not to show fear. “I said, ‘Back off,'” she said, her voice low and firm.

The tallest man grinned and took another step. “We just want to talk, why you got to act like that?”.

Xavier didn’t think. He looked down at Riley.

“Stay right here, don’t move”. He crossed the street fast and stepped right into the alley.

“Hey,” Xavier barked. The men turned, and the woman’s eyes flicked to him, startled.

Xavier kept walking. “You heard her, back off”.

The tallest guy scoffed. “What are you, her bodyguard?”.

“No,” Xavier said. “Just a guy who doesn’t like cowards picking on women”.

The second man stepped forward. “Mind your business, man”.

“I just made it my business”. The tension shifted for a second.

Xavier thought they might jump him, but then one of them muttered, “Whatever, she ain’t worth it”. And they walked off muttering curses.

Xavier turned to the woman. “You all right?”.

She looked shaken but composed. “Yes, thanks to you”.

Then Riley’s voice cut through the air. “Daddy!”.

Xavier turned just in time to catch the little boy charging toward him. He swooped him into his arms.

“Is she okay?” Riley asked, eyes wide. “She’s fine, buddy”.

The woman smiled then, not the polite kind, but one that crinkled the corners of her eyes. “Your son?”.

“Yeah,” Xavier said, “this is Riley”. “Hi,” she said softly.

Riley beamed. “Hi, you’re really pretty”.

Xavier groaned. “Riley?”.

She laughed then, the sound bright and light. “It’s okay, I needed that”.

“You sure you’re all right?” Xavier asked again. She nodded.

“I’ve had worse days, I just wasn’t expecting that”. “I saw you walking alone, didn’t feel right just leaving,” he said.

She looked at him for a long second. “I’m Nadia Hartley”.

“Xavier,” he said, “Xavier Wells”. “Well, Xavier, I owe you, can I buy you coffee?”.

He hesitated. “That’s not necessary”.

“I insist,” she said. He glanced down at Riley.

“I’d have to bring the monster with me”. “I like monsters,” she said, “come on”.

They walked to a nearby cafe, the kind Xavier usually avoided because the prices made his stomach turn. But Nadia ordered without blinking three drinks, a sandwich for Riley, and a quasa for Xavier.

Riley was busy dipping his sandwich in chocolate milk when Xavier leaned over. “You sure you’re okay?”.

Nadia stirred her coffee. “Yeah, I don’t get nervous easily, but that…” she trailed off.

“I’ve lived in enough bad neighborhoods to know how fast things can go wrong,” Xavier said. “I wasn’t going to leave you there”.

She looked at him again. “You really don’t know who I am, do you?”.

He frowned. “Should I?”.

“I run Hartley Innovations,” she said slowly. “Tech company, we just bought the building across from the plaza”.

Xavier blinked. “You’re the CEO?”.

“Yeah,” she said. He leaned back.

“Wow,” he said. She laughed.

“That’s usually the reaction”. “I thought CEOs had drivers and security,” he added.

“I do, but sometimes I like to walk,” she said. “Reminds me I’m still a person”.

He nodded, watching her. She was beautiful in a way that didn’t make sense, expensive and polished and completely out of place next to his worn-out flannel.

“Thank you,” she said again. “You didn’t have to do that”.

“If it was my sister or my mom, I’d want someone to step in,” he said. “You have a sister?”.

“Had one,” he said quietly. “She died a few years ago”.

Nadia’s face softened. “I’m sorry”.

He shrugged. “It’s life, I’ve had my share of hard knocks”.

She looked down at his son. “You doing this alone?”.

“Yeah, Riley’s mom left when he was one,” he said. “Said she wasn’t cut out for diapers and late nights”.

“I didn’t fight her, we’re okay”. Nadia nodded then looked at Riley.

“You’re lucky to have a dad like him”. Riley grinned.

“He’s the best dad ever”. Xavier chuckled.

“Flatterer,” he said. They finished their drinks and Nadia stood.

“I have to get back to the office, big meeting”. But she pulled a card from her wallet and handed it to him.

“That’s my assistant’s number, call her, dinner’s on me, I mean it”. Xavier looked at the card.

“You really don’t have to”. “I want to,” she insisted.

Her eyes met his. “You stepped in for me, the least I can do is buy you a real meal”.

“All right,” he said slowly, “maybe I will”. She smiled then leaned down to Riley.

“Bye, monster”. “Bye, pretty lady,” Riley said.

She laughed as she walked away, heels clicking on the sidewalk. Xavier watched her go, still trying to wrap his head around the fact that he just saved a CEO.

And she’d invited him to dinner. “Daddy,” Riley said, tugging his sleeve, “are you going to marry her?”.

Xavier choked on his coffee. “What? No, I just met her”.

“But she likes you,” Riley said. Xavier looked at the card in his hand then back at the street where she disappeared.

“Yeah,” he murmured to himself, “I think she might”.
