Poor Dad Warned A Woman About A Scam, Not Knowing She Was A Millionaire Who’d Remember Him
A Career Shift and an Invitation
That evening, after putting Lily to bed, Tyler sat at his small kitchen table and filled out the online application for the fleet supervisor position at Delaney Industries.
He attached his resume, added Harold as a reference, and hit submit, trying not to think about his awkward interaction with the company’s CEO.
The following Monday, Tyler was surprised to receive an email requesting an interview. Even more surprising was that it was scheduled for the next day.
He arranged for his ex-wife to pick up Lily from school and asked Harold for a few hours off.
“Go get ’em, Griff,”
Harold encouraged.
“Though I’ll be sorry to lose my best mechanic.”
The Delaney Industries headquarters was a modern glass and steel structure that gleamed in the autumn sunlight.
Tyler, dressed in his only suit purchased for his cousin’s wedding 3 years ago, felt distinctly out of place as he approached the reception desk.
“Tyler Griffith,”
he told the receptionist.
“I have an interview for the fleet maintenance supervisor position.”
The young man at the desk checked his computer.
“Yes, Mr. Griffith, please take the elevator to the 14th floor. Miss Santos in HR will meet you there.”
The interview went well. Miss Santos was thorough but friendly, and Tyler found himself relaxing as he discussed his experience and approach to preventive maintenance.
By the end, he felt cautiously optimistic.
“Thank you for coming in,”
Miss Santos said, standing to shake his hand.
“Oh, and before you go, Miss Delaney asked if you could stop by her office.”
Tyler froze.
“The CEO wants to see me?”
Miss Santos smiled.
“Apparently so. 20th floor, end of the hall.”
As the elevator ascended, Tyler tried to calm his nerves. Why would Rachel Delaney want to see him?
Had he offended her with his warning about the scam, or worse, was she going to personally tell him he wasn’t getting the job? When he reached her office, her assistant waved him straight in.
Rachel was standing by the window, gazing out at the town below. She turned as he entered, and for a brief moment, Tyler was struck again by how beautiful she was.
“Mr. Griffith,”
she greeted him.
“Thank you for coming, Miss Delaney,”
he replied, trying to sound professional.
“I appreciate the opportunity to interview for the position.”
She gestured for him to sit in one of the chairs facing her desk.
“I wanted to thank you personally for your advice the other day.”
Tyler blinked in surprise.
“My advice about Green Tech Innovations?”
She sat down across from him.
“You were right. It was a sophisticated scam. After our conversation, I had my team investigate. The company doesn’t exist beyond a website and some very convincing but falsified credentials.”
Relief washed over Tyler.
“I’m glad you didn’t invest.”
“More than that,”
Rachel continued.
“We traced the operation and found they’ve defrauded at least a dozen high-net-worth individuals. I’ve shared the information with the FBI’s financial crimes division.”
“That’s… wow.”
Tyler was genuinely impressed. Most people would have just walked away. Rachel leaned forward slightly.
“My grandfather built this company on the principle that business should create value, not extract it through deception. I take that seriously.”
There was a moment of silence between them, a subtle shift in the air that Tyler couldn’t quite identify.
“Miss Santos seemed pleased with your interview,”
Rachel finally said.
“I hope so. It would be a great opportunity.”
Rachel nodded.
“The position comes with a significant salary increase from what you’re currently making, comprehensive benefits, and a company vehicle.”
Tyler’s heart raced. Was she offering him the job?
“That would make a huge difference for my daughter and me.”
“Lily, right? 7 years old?”
Tyler was startled.
“How did you know that?”
Rachel smiled.
“I did my homework, just as you did yours on that investment scam.”
Before Tyler could respond, Rachel’s assistant knocked and entered.
“Miss Delaney, your 3:00 conference call is about to start.”
Rachel stood.
“Thank you for coming in, Mr. Griffith. HR will be in touch about next steps.”
Tyler left the building in a daze. The interaction had been brief but intense, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant had just happened beyond the possibility of a new job.
2 days later, Tyler received the job offer. The salary was even higher than he’d anticipated, with a starting date in 2 weeks.
He accepted immediately and celebrated with Lily by taking her for ice cream.
“Does this mean we can get a bigger apartment?”
Lily asked, chocolate smeared around her mouth. Tyler laughed and wiped her face with a napkin.
“Maybe, princess. But first, we’re going to start a savings account for your college.”
His first day at Delaney Industries was a whirlwind of orientation meetings, paperwork, and introductions.
The fleet he would be managing consisted of everything from delivery vans to executive cars, including, he noted with amusement, Rachel’s Aston Martin.
He settled into the role quickly, finding that his practical experience translated well to the corporate environment.
His team of mechanics respected his hands-on knowledge, and the administrative staff appreciated his organized approach to maintenance schedules.
Tyler saw Rachel occasionally in the parking garage or passing through the lobby, always exchanging polite nods or brief hellos.
But 3 weeks into his new job, he received a call from her assistant.
“Miss Delaney would like to see you in her office at 2 p.m. regarding the executive fleet maintenance schedule,”
the assistant informed him. Tyler spent the next few hours making sure he had all the relevant information ready.
When he arrived at Rachel’s office, she was alone, reviewing documents on her tablet.
“You wanted to see me about the executive fleet?”
he asked after she invited him in. Rachel set her tablet aside.
“Partly. I also wanted to see how you’re settling in.”
“Very well,”
Tyler assured her.
“Everyone’s been helpful and the systems you have in place are excellent. I’ve already identified some efficiency improvements for the delivery fleet that should reduce our maintenance costs by about 15%.”
Rachel looked impressed.
“That’s exactly why we hired you. But actually, I have a more specific request.”
She hesitated, then continued.
“My Aston Martin needs its regular service, but I’d prefer if you handled it personally.”
Tyler was surprised.
“I’d be happy to, but we have several certified technicians who are equally qualified.”
“I’m sure they’re excellent,”
Rachel agreed.
“But the car has sentimental value. My father gave it to me before he passed away. I’d feel better knowing it was in your hands.”
There was something in her expression of vulnerability that seemed at odds with her usual composed demeanor. Tyler found himself nodding.
“Of course, I understand completely. When would you like to bring it in?”
“That’s the other thing,”
Rachel said.
“I need to use it this weekend. There’s a charity gala in the city on Saturday night.”
“I could come in early Saturday morning,”
Tyler offered.
“Have it ready by afternoon.”
Rachel brightened.
“That would be perfect. Thank you.”
As Tyler turned to leave, Rachel called after him.
“The gala is for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. They do amazing work for kids with serious illnesses.”
“Sounds worthwhile,”
Tyler commented. Rachel seemed to hesitate again.
“Would you… would you like to attend as my guest?”
Tyler froze, certain he had misheard.
“I’m sorry, the gala?”
Rachel clarified, a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
“I usually attend these functions alone, but it might be nice to have company for a change.”
Tyler’s mind raced. Was the CEO of Delaney Industries asking him on a date, or was this some kind of professional courtesy? Either way, he wasn’t prepared.
“I don’t really have anything appropriate to wear to something like that,”
he admitted.
“And I’d need to arrange child care for Lily.”
“The dress code is formal, but the company has an account with Kingsley’s downtown if you need something,”
Rachel said.
“As for Lily, the invitation includes a plus one, but I understand if it’s complicated.”
Tyler thought quickly.
“My ex-wife is taking Lily this weekend anyway. But are you sure you want me there? I’m not exactly versed in high society events.”
Rachel’s expression softened.
“Tyler, you were honest with me when it would have been easier to stay silent. That kind of integrity is rare in my world. I genuinely enjoy your company.”
Put that way, how could he refuse?
“Then I’d be honored to attend.”
