Poor Girl Mistakenly Hugs a Millionaire—What Happened Next Melted His Heart

The Shattered Legacy and a Dangerous Confession

The thought of his power both thrilled and terrified her. That evening, Zara walked home to the small apartment she shared with her sister, Juno. She couldn’t shake the memory of Damon’s gray eyes.

“You’re glowing,” Juno observed as Zara entered their tiny living room.

“I’m tired,” Zara lied, hanging up her coat.

“Tired people don’t smile at nothing. Who is he?”.

“Just a customer at work,” Zara said. “How are you feeling today?”.

“I’m okay. A little tired, but that’s normal with all the studying”.

Juno had been tired a lot lately. Their parents had died in a car accident three years ago, leaving Zara responsible for everything. Sometimes the weight of it felt crushing.

“Maybe you should see a doctor,” Zara suggested gently.

“Doctors cost money we don’t have. Besides, I’m fine. Stop worrying so much”.

The next morning, Damon was back at his usual table.

“Good morning, Mr. Blackwood,” she said formally.

“Back to Mr. Blackwood, are we?”.

“I think it’s more appropriate considering you could probably buy this entire hotel with your pocket change”.

“Oh, does that bother you?”.

“It should. We’re from completely different worlds. You probably spend more on lunch than I make in a month”.

“Probably,” he agreed without shame. “Does that mean we can’t be friends?”.

“I don’t know what we can be,” she said quietly.

“I have a business dinner next Friday. Small group, very important clients. I need someone to cater it, but not some fancy catering company. I want real food made with care. Are you interested?”.

“You want me to cook for your business dinner?”.

“You mentioned you like to cook. Said it was one of your dreams before life got in the way”.

“Damon, I make sandwiches and heat up soup. I’m not qualified to cook for your business associates”.

“I’m not asking you to impress them with technique. I’m asking you to cook food that tastes like someone cares about it. There’s a difference”.

The payment he offered would cover Juno’s doctor visit and leave money for groceries. It was more than she made in three months at the cafe.

Friday evening found Zara standing in the kitchen of Damon’s penthouse apartment. She’d spent the week planning a menu of herb-crusted salmon, roasted vegetables, homemade pasta with truffle oil, and chocolate tart.

“You look nervous,” Damon said, appearing in the kitchen doorway.

“I am nervous. What if they hate it? What if I embarrass you in front of your important clients?”.

“Zara, look at me,” he said. “I asked you here because I wanted to spend time with you and because I wanted to give you a chance to do something you love”.

The dinner guests arrived at seven. Among them was Victoria Sterling, Damon’s ex-fiancée, a socialite who moved through the apartment like she still belonged there.

“The food is lovely, Damon. Very rustic. Where did you find your caterer?” Victoria asked.

“She’s local,” Damon replied simply.

“How quaint. Hope you didn’t pay too much for this level of service. My usual caterer charges a fortune, but at least she’s trained”.

Later, Victoria peered into the kitchen doorway.

“You must be the help. The food is adequate, but next time you might want to invest in proper serving wear. This isn’t a diner”.

“I’m glad you enjoyed dinner,” Zara replied politely.

“Oh, I’ve had much better. But I suppose Damon is trying to be charitable these days. Sweet, really, how he tries to help the less fortunate”.

Was that what this was? Charity? Zara was fighting back tears when Damon appeared in the kitchen.

“Nothing,” Zara lied. “She thinks I’m your charity project”.

Damon’s expression darkened. He walked back to the dining room.

“Victoria, I think it’s time for you to leave”.

“What? Damon, don’t be ridiculous”.

“You’re rude to my guest, and that’s unacceptable in my home”.

“Your guest? That little waitress is your guest?”.

“Zara is someone I care about, and you insulted her. So yes, it’s time for you to go”.

After the guests left, Damon found Zara packing her supplies.

“I’m sorry about Victoria. She had no right to speak to you that way”.

“She wasn’t wrong. I don’t belong in your world, Damon. Tonight proved that”.

“Tonight proved that some people in my world are shallow and cruel. It didn’t prove anything about you, Zara”.

“Why did you really hire me tonight?”.

“Because I wanted to see you shine. I can’t stop thinking about you, Zara. I can’t stop wanting to know everything about you”.

“I should go,” she whispered.

Two weeks later, Zara’s world shifted. Helping Juno organize old family papers, she found a yellow document: a foreclosure notice for the Chen family restaurant. At the bottom was a name that made her stomach drop: Blackwood Industries.

“Juno, did you know that Blackwood Industries foreclosed on Mom and Dad’s restaurant?”.

“I thought you knew. Mom mentioned it once. I was only fourteen, Zara. I didn’t understand all the details”.

The next morning, Zara went straight to Blackwood Industries.

“I need to see Damon Blackwood. Tell him Zara Chen is here. He’ll see me”.

Damon looked up from his desk as she entered.

“Zara, this is a wonderful surprise. I was just thinking about you”.

She slammed the foreclosure notice on his desk.

“Were you thinking about this too?”.

“Zara, I can explain”.

“Explain what? That your company destroyed my family’s restaurant? You knew exactly who I was when I accidentally hugged you that day”.

“I didn’t know. I swear to you. My company handles hundreds of acquisitions. I don’t personally review every case, especially not from five years ago”.

“You do now. Now you know that you’re talking to the daughter of people you financially ruined”.

“When properties go into foreclosure, we often buy the debt from banks. It’s business, not personal”.

“Not personal? My parents lost everything because of your business decisions. They died stressed and heartbroken”.

“I’m so incredibly sorry. If I had known, I would have found another way”.

“But you didn’t know, so you didn’t care. Every moment between us has been built on a lie”.

“I’m falling in love with you,” Damon said, his voice cracking slightly.

“Don’t. Don’t make this harder than it already is”.

“I’m falling in love with your strength, your kindness. None of that has anything to do with money or the past”.

“But it does. Your business decisions shaped my entire life. I can’t separate the man I’m falling for from the company that destroyed my family”.
