Poor Girl Walked Away Quietly – Then The CEO Saw Her Listed As “Emergency Contact” For A Baby

An Investment in Potential

Within minutes, he was back in his car. He directed his driver to Queen’s Memorial Hospital.

His mind raced with questions. Why had Elena listed him, a virtual stranger, as her baby’s emergency contact?

Where was the child’s father? Why did Alexander Reed, notorious for cutthroat business tactics and emotional detachment, suddenly care so much?

At Queen’s Memorial, it took all of his influence and a few thinly veiled threats to get information. The doctor finally told him it was severe pneumonia.

She’d been working despite being ill, likely unable to afford missing shifts. Finally, her body had simply given out.

“She’s been asking about her daughter,” the doctor added. “We’ve told her Lily is being cared for, but she’s extremely distressed.”

Alexander made a split-second decision. “Can she be transferred to Manhattan General to be with her child?”

The doctor looked doubtful. “It’s not standard procedure for someone in her condition.”

“I’ll cover all expenses,” Alexander said firmly. “Make it happen.”

While the hospitals coordinated the transfer, Alexander returned to Manhattan General to check on baby Lily. Standing at her crib, he was surprised when a nurse asked if he wanted to hold her.

Before he could refuse, the tiny girl was placed in his arms. Her fever had broken.

She looked up at him with curious blue eyes. They somehow seemed to hold wisdom beyond her months.

“She’s responding well to the antibiotics,” the nurse said. “She should be able to go home soon.”

“Do you know when her mother will be here?” Alexander looked down at Lily’s tiny face.

“Her mother is coming,” he said softly. “She’s been sick too, but she’s coming.”

As he held the child, a strange feeling bloomed in his chest. It was a protectiveness he’d never experienced before.

Alexander had built his life around acquisition and achievement. There was no room for family entanglements.

Yet somehow, this tiny human and her mysterious mother had crashed into his carefully controlled world. By evening, Elellanena had been transferred to Manhattan General.

She was placed in a private room, courtesy of Alexander’s influence. She regained consciousness and found the CEO of Pinnacle Corporation sitting beside her bed.

Her eyes widened with confusion and fear. “My baby,” were her first hoarse words. “Where’s Lily?”

“She’s here in the pediatric ward,” Alexander assured her. “She had a fever, but she’s doing better now. They’re taking good care of her.”

Relief washed over Elena’s pale face, followed quickly by weariness. “Why are you here? How did you—?”

Understanding dawned in her eyes. “The emergency contact. I’m so sorry. I never thought they’d actually call you.”

Alexander leaned forward. His usual imposing demeanor was softened by genuine curiosity.

“That’s what I can’t understand, Ms. Morgan. Why me? Why list a man who rejected your job application as your child’s emergency contact?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears as she turned away. The weight of secrets was clearly heavy on her shoulders.

Whatever her answer would be, Alexander suddenly realized it would change everything for both of them. Elellanena’s fingers twisted the thin hospital blanket.

She struggled to form words. The weight of Alexander Reed’s question hung in the air between them.

“I didn’t have anyone else,” she finally admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “My parents died in a car accident three years ago.”

“I have no siblings and no close friends since I moved to New York.” She paused, gathering courage.

“When I fill out forms, I can’t leave the emergency contact blank. It feels like tempting fate.”

“So I put your name after the interview. You seemed capable, someone who could handle an emergency.”

A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “I never thought they’d actually call you. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.”

Alexander studied her face, searching for deception. He found only exhaustion and vulnerability.

“That’s quite a risk to take,” he said finally. “Trusting a stranger with your child’s welfare.”

“Sometimes strangers are safer than the people who are supposed to care about you,” Elellanena replied cryptically. She then closed her eyes.

“Is Lily really okay?” “Yes, her fever is down. I—I held her earlier.”

The admission felt strangely intimate. Elena’s eyes snapped open, surprise evident on her face.

“You did?” “The nurse insisted,” he said defensively, then softened. “She has your eyes.”

“Everyone says that.” A small smile touched Elellanena’s lips before fading.

“Mr. Reed, thank you for coming, but you don’t need to stay. I’ll be discharged soon and we’ll be out of your life.”

Something in her words struck Alexander as wrong. She was still extremely weak.

The doctors had mentioned at least two more days of hospitalization. Where would she go afterward?

How would she care for an infant while recovering? “Ms. Morgan—Elena,” he said, surprising himself with the use of her first name.

“I’d like to help. Not out of pity,” he added quickly, seeing her expression harden.

“Consider it a business arrangement. You need time to recover, and I need an assistant who isn’t afraid to take initiative.”

His lips quirked into a half smile. “Listing the CEO of a Fortune 500 company as your baby’s emergency contact certainly shows initiative.”

Elellanena’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. “You rejected me for that position two weeks ago.”

“I’m reconsidering.” Alexander stood, straightening his custom suit. “Rest now. We’ll discuss details later.”

Outside her room, Alexander paused, thrown by his own impulsive offer. What was he doing?

His phone buzzed with messages from the office. There were crises that needed his attention and decisions only he could make.

Yet here he was, involved in the messy lives of a struggling single mother and her infant. It was completely out of character.

But he couldn’t shake the image of Elena’s face when she said she had no one. He remembered the feeling of tiny Lily in his arms.

Before he could change his mind, he made calls to arrange temporary care for both patients. He then headed back to the office.

For three days, Alexander divided his time between Pinnacle headquarters and the hospital. He learned that Elellanena had been working three jobs.

She worked the morning shift at a coffee shop and evening waitressing at a diner. She did freelance data entry work at night while caring for Lily.

No wonder her body had collapsed under the strain. On the fourth day, when Elellanena was discharged, Alexander had already prepared a solution.

He showed up at the hospital with his driver and a car seat. “What’s this?” Elellanena asked.

She held Lily close as a nurse wheeled her to the exit. “Your ride,” Alexander replied.

“I’ve arranged a temporary apartment for you both while you recover. It’s in a building Pinnacle owns, used for visiting executives.”

“It’s sitting empty right now.” Elena’s pride warred visibly with practicality.

“Mr. Reed—” “The job offer stands,” he interrupted.

“Executive assistant, starting when your doctor clears you for work. The apartment comes with the position.”

“You’ll have access to the building’s childcare center for Lily.” “Why are you doing this?” Elellanena’s voice trembled.

“You don’t know me.” Alexander hesitated, not entirely sure himself.

“Consider it an investment in a promising employee,” he said finally. “Now shall we go, unless you’d prefer to take the subway with a newborn and pneumonia?”

Elellanena’s reluctant smile was small but genuine. She allowed Alexander to help her into the car.

The corporate apartment was nothing like Elena’s small Queens unit. Located in a luxury building in Murray Hill, it featured two bedrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows.

To Elena’s surprise, a crib had been set up in the smaller bedroom. There was a supply of diapers and baby essentials.

“How did you know what to get?” she asked. She watched Alexander awkwardly holding Lily while she explored the apartment.

“I didn’t. My assistant handled it.” He carefully returned the baby to her arms.

“There’s food in the refrigerator. The doorman has my number if you need anything.”

Before leaving, Alexander hesitated. “There’s one thing I still don’t understand. Where is Lily’s father in all this?”

Elena’s expression closed off immediately. “Not in the picture.”

“Will he cause problems if he finds out about this arrangement?” “He won’t,” she said with such certainty that Alexander didn’t press further.

Over the next two weeks, Alexander found himself stopping by the apartment regularly. It was ostensibly to discuss Elena’s upcoming job duties.

Increasingly, he went just to see how she and Lily were doing. He learned that Elena had put herself through college while working full-time.

She earned a business degree with honors. She’d come to New York with dreams of a career in finance.

Without connections, those doors remained firmly closed. “Then I found out I was pregnant,” she explained one evening.

They sat in the apartment’s living room with Lily sleeping peacefully in her lap. “My boyfriend at the time—”

She stopped, something dark flashing across her face. “He wasn’t ready for fatherhood. I couldn’t blame him.”

Alexander sensed there was more to the story but didn’t push. As Elena’s strength returned, Alexander was surprised to find himself enjoying their conversations.

Her perspective on business was refreshingly straightforward. It was unmarred by the politics and posturing he encountered daily.

She challenged his thinking in ways his yes-men executives never dared. “You’re wasting potential in your Pacific division,” she told him one evening.

“Their R&D team has innovations your main product line could use. But your corporate structure has them siloed.”

Alexander raised an eyebrow. “And you know this how?”

Elellanena blushed. “I’ve been reading your company reports. You left them here last week and I was bored.”

She bit her lip. “Sorry if that’s overstepping.” Instead of being annoyed, Alexander found himself impressed.

“What would you suggest?” Their discussion lasted hours, with Elena offering insights his highly paid consultants had missed.

By the end, he was more convinced than ever that hiring her had been the right decision. He hadn’t anticipated how Lily was affecting him.

The infant seemed to recognize him now, cooing and reaching for him when he entered. Alexander found himself holding her more often.
