Pregnant Waitress Worked Double Shifts—What One Stranger Did Changed Her Life Forever…
An Unexpected Encounter
At 10:37 a.m., just after cleaning a table left sticky with syrup and spilled creamer, Emily noticed a man walk in. He didn’t look like the regulars.
He was mid-50s maybe older, in faded jeans, a heavy wool coat, and a worn out Cubs cap. He sat alone at the far booth by the window, the one that got the most sunlight.
The one Emily always liked during her short breaks, though lately she didn’t have many of those. He didn’t look up when she brought him a menu.
“Just coffee black,” he said, voice calm but deep. “And a cheeseburger. No onions.”
“Coming right up,” she said with a nod.
She turned, careful not to bump the table with her belly, and walked away feeling his eyes on her. It was not in the way some men stared, but in that kind of way that felt like someone seeing through you.
She tried not to let it bother her. Over the next half hour, Emily went about her work refilling coffee, taking orders, and delivering plates with tired cheerfulness.
But every time she passed his table, he watched her, not staring but just observing. Finally, as she refilled his coffee, he broke the silence.
“You’ve been on your feet a long time.” Emily paused, surprised.
“Yeah,” she said with a small smile. “Feels like forever today.”
“You’re close huh?” he asked nodding at her belly.
“Couple more weeks,” she said. “Or sooner if she keeps kicking like this.”
He smiled. “Must be hard doing it all alone.”
Something in her chest tightened, but she just nodded. “It is but I’m managing.”
He didn’t say anything else, just stirred his coffee slowly. Emily excused herself and got back to work.
