She Arrived With Her Daughter on a Blind Date — The Single Dad Did Something Unexpected

Lessons in Parenting and Love

The park date happened the following Saturday. Marcus arrived with Elijah, an energetic 7-year-old who immediately wanted to show Sophia the ducks.

The age difference didn’t matter. Elijah was gentle with the toddler, showing her how to throw breadcrumbs and helping her climb on the play structure.

“he’s wonderful with her”

Isabella said, sitting beside Marcus on a bench.

“he’s always wanted a sibling his mom”

Marcus paused.

“she told him she was done with kids that having him was enough he took that hard”

“that’s awful i’m sorry”

“it taught him to appreciate family though to value the people who show up”

Marcus watched Elijah patiently wait while Sophia climb slowly up the slide stairs.

“he asked me this morning if you were going to be his new mom i told him that’s not how it works that we’re just friends getting to know each other”

“what did he say to that”

“he said ‘Friends is a good place to start but I should probably move faster because you’re pretty and nice and there are probably other guys trying to date you.'”

Isabella laughed.

“your son is very wise”

“disturbingly so i don’t know where he gets it”

Over the next two months they saw each other regularly, always activities that included the kids, such as the zoo, children’s museums, and playground dates.

Marcus and Isabella learned each other through parenting, through watching how the other handled tantrums and scraped knees and the thousand small crises of child rearing.

Isabella noticed how Marcus never made her feel guilty for Sophia’s behavior. When the toddler had a meltdown at the aquarium, he calmly helped redirect her attention while Isabella dealt with the staires of other visitors.

When Sophia got sick and Isabella had to cancel their plans, Marcus showed up at her apartment with soup and children’s medicine, staying to help even though it meant risking his own exposure.

“you don’t have to do this”

Isabella said, watching Marcus read to Sophia while she rested feverish on the couch.

“i know I want to”

He looked up from the picture book.

“what are we doing Marcus is this dating are we together i don’t even know anymore”

“i think we’re building something better than just dating we’re building a family not the traditional way but who cares about traditional”
