She Borrowed a Chair at a Café, She Didn’t Know the Billionaire Beside Her Was Already Falling

The Unexpected Encounter at the Cafe

The espresso machine hissed loudly as Lily Sanders frantically scanned the packed cafe, her leather portfolio clutched to her chest and her heartbeat matching the frantic tempo of the rain pelting against the windows. Every table was occupied, and she had exactly 15 minutes to review her presentation.

Lily had the most important job interview of her life. She approached a table where a man in a charcoal suit sat alone, typing on his laptop with intense focus.

“Excuse me,” she said.

“Would you mind if I borrowed this chair? I just need somewhere to sit for a few minutes.”

The man looked up, and Lily felt an unexpected jolt when their eyes met. He had the kind of blue eyes that made her momentarily forget why she was standing there, rain water dripping from her coat onto the polished wooden floor.

“Actually,” he said, gesturing to the empty chair across from him.

“You can sit here if you’d like. I don’t mind sharing the table.”

Lily hesitated.

“I don’t want to disturb you.”

“You’re not,” he replied with a warm smile that created small creases at the corners of his eyes.

“I could use a break from these spreadsheets anyway.”

“Thank you,” Lily said, relief washing over her as she slipped into the chair.

“I’m Lily, by the way.”

“Connor,” he replied, closing his laptop partially.

“Connor Jacobson.”

Lily quickly arranged her portfolio on the table, unaware that Connor was observing her with quiet interest. He took note of the way she tucked a strand of auburn hair behind her ear as she concentrated.

“Important meeting?” he asked.

“Job interview,” Lily admitted, glancing at her watch.

“In exactly 14 minutes, six blocks from here. And of course, I picked today of all days to be completely unprepared.”

Connor chuckled.

“What’s the position?”

“Creative director at Horizon Marketing,” Lily replied, flipping through her portfolio pages.

“It’s my dream job, but the competition is fierce.”

“I’m sure you’ll do great,” Connor said, watching as she meticulously arranged her work samples.

What Lily didn’t know was that Connor Jacobson was the founder and CEO of Jacobson Industries, a technology conglomerate valued at over $4 billion. Something about this rain-soaked woman with determination in her eyes had captured his attention completely.

“You mind if I take a look?” Connor asked, nodding toward her portfolio.

“I have some experience with marketing.”

Lily hesitated, then slid her portfolio across the table.

“Sure, I’d appreciate another perspective.”

Connor flipped through the pages with surprising expertise, occasionally nodding or raising an eyebrow. Lily found herself studying his face—the strong jawline and the thoughtful expression. He seemed genuinely interested in her work.

“This campaign is brilliant,” he said, pointing to her redesign for a struggling local business.

“You increased their engagement by how much?”

“200% in the first quarter,” Lily replied, surprised by his insight.

Connor nodded appreciatively.

“Impressive. Have you practiced your pitch?”

“That’s what I was about to do,” Lily admitted.

“Go ahead,” Connor said, leaning back in his chair.

“Pretend I’m the interviewer.”

Normally, Lily would have declined, but something about Connor’s encouraging smile made her feel at ease. She launched into her presentation, gaining confidence with each slide. When she finished, Connor was looking at her with undisguised admiration.

“If Horizon doesn’t hire you, they’re making a massive mistake,” he said.

Lily felt warmth spread through her chest at his words.

“Thank you. That means a lot.”

Checking her watch, she gasped.

“I have to go! Thank you so much for sharing your table and listening to my rambling.”

“It wasn’t rambling,” Connor said as she hurriedly packed up.

“It was inspiring.”

Lily paused momentarily, caught off guard by the sincerity in his voice.

“It was nice meeting you, Connor.”

“Wait,” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a business card.

“In case you want to let me know how it goes.”

Lily accepted the card, barely glancing at it before tucking it into her portfolio.

“Thanks again!”

As she rushed out into the rain, she didn’t notice Connor watching her leave, already wondering when he might see her again. The interview went better than Lily could have hoped. The creative team at Horizon seemed impressed with her portfolio and ideas.

By the time she left the building, the rain had stopped and the afternoon sun was breaking through the clouds. It wasn’t until she was on the subway home that she remembered the business card. Fishing it out, she finally read it properly.

“Connor Jacobson, founder and CEO, Jacobson Industries.”

Lily nearly dropped the card. Jacobson Industries was one of the largest tech companies in the country. She had just shared a table with a billionaire and had no idea.

“No way,” she whispered to herself, earning a curious glance from the passenger beside her.
