She Choked At A Café Table, The Struggling Dad Who Helped Didn’t Know She Was A CEO Falling Hard

Revelations and a New Partnership

Samuel left the building feeling cautiously optimistic. Outside, he checked his phone and found a text message from an unknown number.

“Hope your interview went well. Still want to thank you properly for saving me this morning. Dinner tonight? Jasmine.”

He hesitated before responding. Dating hadn’t been a priority since his ex-wife left. Between caring for Emma and searching for work, there simply hadn’t been time. But something about Jasmine intrigued him.

“Emma has a sleepover at her friend’s house tonight. Dinner would be nice, thank you.”

Jasmine suggested an upscale Italian restaurant downtown. Samuel worried about the expense. However, he decided he could justify one nice meal, especially if it meant networking with someone who claimed to have connections at Pinnacle.

That evening, he arrived at Vincenzo’s ten minutes early wearing his only good suit. The maître d’ led him to a private corner table. Jasmine was already waiting, looking stunning in a simple black dress. Her dark hair fell in loose waves around her shoulders.

“You clean up nicely,” she smiled as he sat down.

“So do you. Though you looked pretty put together even while choking,” he joked.

He immediately regretted it.

“Sorry, that came out wrong.”

Jasmine laughed.

“No, I appreciate the humor. How was your interview?”

“Actually really good. The director seemed impressed and they asked how soon I could start.”

“That’s fantastic. Tell me more about your work.”

As they shared appetizers, Samuel explained his approach to marketing. He spoke of his passion for storytelling through campaigns and how he’d climbed the corporate ladder before restructuring left him jobless.

“The hardest part has been maintaining Emma’s stability,” he admitted. “She’s already been through so much with her mother leaving. I don’t want her to feel the financial stress too.”

“How old is Emma?” Jasmine asked.

“Seven going on 30.”

Samuel smiled.

“She’s so perceptive and resilient. Last month, when I had to cancel our traditional pizza Friday because I was short on cash, she suggested we make homemade pizza instead. She said it was more fun that way.”

“She sounds wonderful,” Jasmine said softly. “You’re clearly doing something right.”

Samuel took a sip of wine.

“Enough about my struggles. Tell me about you. What do you do?”

Jasmine hesitated, swirling her wine glass.

“I work in corporate technology. It keeps me busy too.”

“Busy for personal life?” Samuel asked.

“Something like that,” she smiled. “My last relationship ended because he couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t just take a step back from work whenever he wanted attention.”

“That seems short-sighted of him,” Samuel observed. “Career passion isn’t something to stifle.”

Jasmine studied him thoughtfully.

“Most men find my ambition intimidating.”

“I find ambition admirable,” Samuel countered. “Besides, after raising a strong-willed daughter like Emma, very little intimidates me anymore.”

Their conversation flowed effortlessly through dinner. They discovered shared interests in classic films, hiking, and terrible puns. By dessert, Samuel realized he hadn’t enjoyed himself this much in years.

“I should get going,” he said reluctantly, checking his watch. “Early morning tomorrow. Emma has soccer practice.”

“Of course,” Jasmine nodded.

When the check arrived, she smoothly intercepted it.

“This is my thank you, remember?”

“At least let me leave the tip,” Samuel insisted.

“How about this? You can pay next time,” Jasmine suggested, a question in her eyes.

Samuel smiled.

“I’d like that.”

Outside the restaurant, the spring evening was unexpectedly cool. Samuel instinctively removed his jacket and draped it over Jasmine’s shoulders.

“Such a gentleman,” she teased, but pulled the jacket closer.

“Just decent human behavior,” he shrugged. “My dad taught me that. He raised me alone too, after my mom died.”

Jasmine’s expression softened.

“He did a good job.”

As they reached her car, a luxury sedan that made Samuel briefly self-conscious about his ten-year-old Honda, Jasmine turned to face him.

“Thank you for tonight,” she said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had such genuine conversation.”

Before Samuel could respond, his phone rang. Checking the caller ID, he frowned.

“It’s Emma’s friend’s mom. I should take this.”

The call was brief but concerning. Emma had developed a fever and wanted to come home. Samuel apologized to Jasmine for cutting the evening short.

“Don’t apologize,” she said firmly. “Go take care of your daughter.”

“I had a wonderful time,” Samuel said, already backing toward his car. “I’d really like to see you again.”

“You will,” Jasmine promised, watching him hurry away.

The next morning, Samuel sat at his kitchen table reviewing his budget while Emma rested on the couch with her fever. The calendar on the refrigerator was circled with bill due dates. His bank account couldn’t stretch much further without income.

His phone rang with an unknown number.

“Mr. Zayn, this is Deianne Foster from Pinnacle Marketing. I’m pleased to offer you the senior strategist position. Your salary would be…”

She named a figure nearly 20% higher than Samuel had expected.

“We’d like you to start Monday. Does that work for you?”

Samuel nearly dropped the phone.

“Yes, absolutely! Thank you so much for this opportunity.”

After hanging up, he did a little victory dance that made Emma giggle despite her fever.

“Did you get the job, Daddy?”

“I did, sweetheart! And it’s a really good one. We’re going to be okay.”

His phone chimed with a text from Jasmine.

“Heard some good news might be coming your way. Celebration dinner tomorrow night? I can recommend a great babysitter.”

Samuel stared at the text, puzzled. How could she possibly know about the job offer already? The timing was too coincidental.

He texted back, accepting the dinner invitation, but added: “Did you have something to do with Pinnacle hiring me?”

Her response was enigmatic.

“I believe in recognizing talent. You got the job because you’re qualified. Let’s talk tomorrow.”

The babysitter Jasmine recommended, her assistant’s college-aged daughter, arrived promptly the next evening. Emma, recovered from her fever, took to her immediately when she produced a set of coloring books featuring Emma’s favorite cartoon characters.

“How did she know I like Cosmic Explorers?” Emma whispered to Samuel.

“I might have mentioned it to Jasmine,” he fibbed, though he had no recollection of discussing Emma’s television preferences.

This time, Jasmine suggested a casual bistro with outdoor seating overlooking the city park. When Samuel arrived, she was already there, dressed in jeans and a simple blouse that somehow looked more expensive than his entire wardrobe.

“Congratulations on the job,” she said, standing to greet him with a quick hug that left a lingering scent of her perfume.

“Thank you. Though I’m curious about your involvement,” Samuel said directly as they sat down. “It seems too coincidental that you heard about my offer.”

Jasmine sighed.

“I was hoping to ease into this. The truth is, I didn’t just put in a good word. I’m actually your boss. Well, your boss’s boss’s boss, technically.”

Samuel’s confusion must have shown on his face because she continued.

“I’m the CEO of Hayes Innovations. We own Pinnacle Marketing along with about 20 other companies.”

The revelation hit Samuel like a bucket of cold water.

“You’re Jasmine Hayes of Hayes Innovations?”

She nodded, watching his reaction carefully.

“So yesterday, when I told you about my financial struggles and my desperation for this job—”

“I already knew who you were,” she admitted. “But Samuel, I didn’t hire you. I simply asked Deianne to pay special attention to your interview. Your qualifications and performance earned you that position.”

Samuel sat back, processing this information.

“Why didn’t you tell me who you were from the beginning?”

“Honestly, it was refreshing to be seen as just a person, not a CEO or a potential business connection. When people learn what I do, they change. They either want something from me or they are intimidated.”

“And choking on coffee was your subtle strategy to meet new people?” Samuel asked, a smile tugging at his lips despite his confusion.

Jasmine laughed.

“Not exactly planned, but effective. Look, I understand if this changes things between us. I’ve crossed a professional line, and I apologize for that.”

Samuel considered her words carefully.

“It does complicate things. I don’t want anyone at Pinnacle thinking I got the job because I’m dating the big boss.”

“Dating?” Jasmine raised an eyebrow.

Samuel flushed.

“I meant hypothetically speaking.”

Their food arrived, providing a momentary distraction. As they ate, Samuel contemplated the situation. He was attracted to Jasmine, undeniably so. But was it worth the potential workplace complications?

More importantly, could he trust her intentions after this revelation?

“What exactly are you looking for, Jasmine?” he finally asked.

She set down her fork.

“I’m not entirely sure. I know I enjoy your company. I admire how devoted you are to Emma. And yes, I find you attractive. But I also understand the complexities this creates.”

“Especially since my primary concern has to be providing stability for Emma,” Samuel added. “I can’t risk this new job.”

“I would never let our personal relationship affect your professional one,” Jasmine assured him. “In fact, I could recuse myself from any decisions involving Pinnacle while we figure this out.”

Samuel appreciated her directness.

“I need to think about this. It’s a lot to process.”

“Of course,” Jasmine nodded. “For what it’s worth, I didn’t plan any of this. I’m just as surprised by these feelings as you are.”

They finished dinner with lighter conversation, carefully navigating around the elephant in the room. When Samuel dropped Jasmine off at her building, a luxury high-rise downtown, she leaned over and kissed his cheek.

“Whatever you decide, I’m glad that coffee bean brought you into my life,” she said softly.
