She Covered Her Roommate’s Babysitting Job—And Fell for the Little Girl’s Dad…He was Millionaire

The Shadows of Doubt and Heartbreak

The days that followed were unlike anything Maya had known. The mansion softened into something closer to home. Ava thrived, giggling more and drawing hopeful pictures.

One day, a drawing on the fridge showed three figures: a tall man, a small girl, and a woman in a yellow dress. The words read: “Me, Daddy, and Miss Maya at the park”.

They went to the park that Sunday. A week later, Jackson invited her to a charity gala.

“Would you consider coming? Not as the sitter, as my guest”.

Maya hesitated, saying she had nothing to wear. But when the day came, a stunning navy blue gown awaited her. She stepped into the ballroom with quiet grace.

Jackson stayed close, introducing her as a dear friend. However, Maya could hear the whispers.

“She’s the sitter, isn’t she?” one woman whispered.

“The orphan girl, right?” another smirked.

Maya excused herself and went to the restroom to compose herself. She found Jackson on the balcony later.

“What happened?” he asked.

“You know what they’re saying,” Maya replied. “They think I don’t belong here”.

“Maya, you belong more than anyone here tonight,” Jackson said fiercely. “Let them whisper. I brought you here because you belong with us”.

He held out his hand to dance.

But the peace did not last. Later, Maya stood in the drawing room, which now felt as sterile as a courtroom. No one had said the word “thief,” but it was everywhere.

A printed inventory of Mrs. Cain’s jewelry was being held by the housekeeper.

“I never even entered the room with Mrs. Cain’s jewelry,” Maya said, her voice shaking.

She turned to the staff she had worked with, but they looked through her as if she were no longer real. She looked at Jackson, pleading with her eyes.

“Jackson, tell them you know I wouldn’t do this”.

Jackson said nothing. He looked at the floor, his jaw twitching. Maya saw fear in him—fear of being a fool, fear of trusting someone who came from nothing.

“I see,” she whispered.

She pulled out a plastic unicorn watch Ava had given her and placed it on the table.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Not because I did anything wrong, but because I believed I had found a home here”.

As she walked toward the door, Ava came thundering down the hall and flung herself into Maya’s arms.

“You can’t go! You didn’t take anything!” Ava wailed.

“I know you believe me, sweetheart,” Maya whispered.

Ava turned to her father. “Why won’t you say anything, Daddy? Why won’t you fight for her?”

Jackson’s hand clenched into a fist, but no words came. Maya gently loosened Ava’s arms.

“Be strong, keep smiling, and always believe in your heart,” Maya told the girl.

She walked away with her back straight. At the threshold, she glanced at Jackson. His eyes were full of guilt, but it was too late. She stepped out into the biting night air.
