She Defends Him From His Manipulative Ex At Party, Unaware He’s A CEO Who’ll Protect Her Heart

The CEO’s Secret

True to his word, Ryan called the next day. Not texted, actually called, which felt refreshingly old-fashioned. They arranged dinner for the following weekend at a trendy farm-to-table restaurant downtown.

Sophia arrived five minutes early, only to find Ryan already waiting at a corner table, looking even more handsome in dark jeans and a forest green button-down that brought out flecks of green in his hazel eyes.

“You clean up nicely outside of networking events,” she said as he stood to greet her.

“I was just thinking the same about you,” he replied, his gaze appreciative but respectful as he took in her simple black dress.

Dinner was surprisingly easy. Ryan was intelligent and funny, with a self-deprecating wit that put her at ease. He asked thoughtful questions about her business and seemed genuinely interested in her answers.,

“So how did Green Light Events come to be?” he asked over their main courses.

“I was working in corporate event planning for a big financial firm,” Sophia explained.

“The pay was good, but I was basically planning the same boring conferences over and over. I wanted to be more creative, to design experiences that people would actually remember.”

“So you took the leap into entrepreneurship?”

“It wasn’t quite that dramatic. I started moonlighting, planning weddings and parties for friends on weekends. Word spread, and eventually I had enough clients to quit my day job.”

She twirled pasta around her fork.

“It was terrifying, but also the best decision I’ve ever made.”

“That takes courage,” Ryan said, looking genuinely impressed.

“How long have you been on your own now?”

“Almost three years. The first year was rough—lots of ramen and sleepless nights—but now we’re actually turning away business. I have two employees now, well, one full-time assistant and a part-time coordinator.”,

Sophia smiled proudly.

“We’re small but mighty.”

“I can believe that,” Ryan said, his eyes warm.

“You certainly made an impression at the mixer.”

Sophia groaned.

“I still can’t believe I did that. I’m not usually so confrontational.”

“I’m glad you were that night. Vanessa can be…”

He paused, searching for the right word.

“Persistent,” Sophia supplied.

“That’s a diplomatic way of putting it.”

Ryan sighed.

“We dated for about a year. She’s the daughter of one of my father’s business associates, and breaking things off was complicated.”

“Business politics?”

Ryan nodded.

“Among other things. Vanessa doesn’t like to lose, and she viewed our relationship as something she’d invested in—something with a return she was entitled to.”

Sophia frowned.

“That doesn’t sound like a healthy perspective on love.”

“No,” Ryan agreed.

“It’s not.”

He hesitated before adding.

“My divorce two years ago taught me that much at least.”

“You were married?”

Sophia couldn’t hide her surprise.,

“Briefly, right out of college. Another relationship that looked good on paper but lacked any real foundation.”

He shook his head ruefully.

“I’m not usually this forthcoming about my romantic failures on first dates.”

“Maybe it’s my disarming charm,” Sophia suggested with a playful smile, trying to lighten the mood.

Ryan’s expression softened.

“Maybe it is.”

The conversation flowed naturally from there, touching on everything from their favorite books to travel disasters to childhood pets. By the time they finished dessert, a shared tiramisu that was divine, Sophia realized three hours had passed in what felt like minutes.

As they walked to their cars, Ryan slowed his pace.

“I had a great time tonight, Sophia.”

“So did I,” she admitted, surprised by how much she meant it.

“I’d like to see you again if you’re interested.”

Sophia looked up at him, moonlight casting soft shadows across his features.

“I think I’d like that too.”

He smiled, relief evident in his expression, and leaned down slowly, giving her plenty of time to pull away if she wanted. But Sophia found herself rising up on her toes to meet him halfway.,

The kiss was gentle, almost tentative at first, then deepened into something that made her pulse quicken and her fingers curl into the fabric of his shirt. When they finally broke apart, both slightly breathless, Ryan tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“You better,” Sophia replied, her lips still tingling from his kiss.

Over the next few weeks, they fell into an easy rhythm of dinners, movies, and long walks through the city. Ryan was attentive and thoughtful, always respecting her busy schedule and often bringing coffee to her office when she was working late on event preparations.

Yet for all his openness about his feelings for her, Sophia noticed that Ryan remained vague about certain aspects of his life. He mentioned working long hours and traveling frequently but shared few details about his actual position.

He was clearly successful; his apartment in Rittenhouse Square was stunning, and he never blinked at the check, no matter how upscale the restaurant. But whenever the conversation veered toward his specific role at work, he deftly changed the subject.,

“Why the mystery around your job?” Sophia finally asked one evening as they walked along the Schuylkill River Trail hand in hand.

“Are you secretly a spy or something?”

Ryan laughed, but it sounded slightly forced.

“Nothing that exciting, I promise. I just prefer to keep work and personal life separate when I can.”

“Fair enough,” Sophia said, though she couldn’t help feeling there was more to it than that.

Her curiosity was finally satisfied the following week, though not in the way she expected. She was knee-deep in preparations for her biggest event of the year, a charity gala for the children’s hospital, when her assistant, Maya, burst into her office.

“Soph, you need to see this.”

Maya thrust her tablet under Sophia’s nose. The screen displayed a business publication’s website featuring an article titled “Grayson Energy Announces Revolutionary Solar Storage Technology.”,

Beside the article was a photo of Ryan in a sleek boardroom, looking every inch the powerful executive in a charcoal suit.

“That’s Ryan,” Sophia said dumbly, staring at the image.

“Ryan Grayson.”

“You’re dating Ryan Grayson?”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“The one you’ve been dating for the past month? That Ryan?”

Sophia nodded slowly, scanning the article. According to the text, Ryan wasn’t just working in renewable energy; he was the CEO and majority shareholder of Grayson Energy, one of the largest private renewable energy companies on the East Coast.

The article mentioned the company’s valuation at over two billion dollars and referred to Ryan as one of the most innovative leaders in the green energy sector.

“You’re dating a billionaire CEO and you didn’t tell me?”

Maya looked scandalized.

“I didn’t know,” Sophia said, her mind racing.

“He just said he worked in renewable energy. He never mentioned being the CEO.”

“Weird flex, but okay,” Mia muttered.

“Maybe he wanted you to like him for himself and not his money.”,

“Maybe,” Sophia agreed, but a knot of unease had formed in her stomach.

Why hadn’t he trusted her enough to tell her the truth? That evening, Ryan texted to cancel their dinner plans, citing an unexpected work emergency.

Now that Sophia knew what that likely entailed, she simply replied with understanding and support. But as she went to bed that night, alone with her thoughts, the questions multiplied. What else wasn’t he telling her?

And why did it matter so much when they’d only been dating a short while? Two days later, Ryan finally resurfaced, looking exhausted but triumphant.

“I’m sorry about disappearing,” he said, presenting her with a bouquet of wildflowers as he entered her apartment.

“It’s been a crazy week.”

“So I gathered,” Sophia replied, accepting the flowers but keeping her tone neutral.

“Congratulations on the solar storage breakthrough.”

Ryan froze, his expression shifting from confusion to realization to chagrin.

“You saw the article.”

“I did.”

Sophia set the flowers on her kitchen counter.

“Were you ever planning to tell me that you’re not just working in renewable energy but actually running the whole show?”

Ryan sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“Yes, of course. I just… I wanted you to get to know me as Ryan, not as the CEO of Grayson Energy.”

“And those are different people?”

“Sometimes they have to be,” he admitted, sinking onto her couch.

“Being the public face of a company that size comes with baggage. People treat you differently. Either they want something from you, or they make assumptions about who you are based on your position.”

Sophia sat beside him, leaving a deliberate space between them.

“I understand wanting to be known for yourself, not your title. But we’ve been seeing each other for weeks, Ryan. Did you think I would suddenly start treating you differently?”

“I’ve had it happen before,” he said quietly.

“With Vanessa. With my ex-wife. With friends I thought I could trust. Once they understood the full extent of the company’s success, our relationship dynamics changed. I became a resource, a connection, a status symbol.”,

His eyes met hers, vulnerable in a way she hadn’t seen before.

“With you, it was different from the start. You stepped in to help me when you thought I was just some guy being hassled by his ex. You liked me for me, and I wanted to protect that for as long as possible.”

Sophia felt her anger softening at the genuine pain in his voice.

“I get that. I do. But relationships need trust to work. How can I trust you if you’re hiding major parts of your life from me?”

“You’re right,” Ryan said, reaching for her hand.

“I should have told you sooner. I was just scared of losing what we were building.”

“And what is that, exactly?” Sophia asked, letting him take her hand but still maintaining emotional distance.

“What are we building, Ryan?”

“Something I haven’t had before,” he answered without hesitation.

“Something real with someone who sees me, not what I can do for them.”

He squeezed her hand gently.

“I’m falling in love with you, Sophia. And that terrifies me, because I’ve never felt this way so quickly before.”,

The confession caught her off-guard, sending a jolt through her system. Despite her lingering hurt, she couldn’t deny that her feelings for Ryan had grown deeper than she’d expected, too.

“I need to know I can trust you,” she said finally.

“No more hiding important parts of your life. If we’re going to do this, I need all of you, not just the parts you think I want to see.”

“You have me,” Ryan promised, his voice low and intense.

“All of me. No more secrets.”

Sophia studied his face, searching for any sign of insincerity, but found only earnest determination.

“Okay,” she said softly.

“Then I think you should know I’m falling for you too.”

The relief and joy that transformed his expression made her heart skip. He pulled her into his arms, holding her as though she were precious.

“I’ll prove myself worthy of your trust, Sophia. I promise.”
